No. Hz measures how often a display can refresh its image; FPS measures how many frames a computer or game produces each second. A 144Hz monitor can show up to 144 refreshes per second, but it does not make a game run at 144 FPS. The CPU and GPU must deliver frames, and synchronization affects how smoothly those frames appear.
What do Hz and FPS measure?
Hz: the display’s refresh rate
Hertz (Hz) describes a monitor’s refresh rate: how many times per second it can update the image. A 144Hz display has the capability to refresh 144 times per second. That is a display specification, not a guarantee that every refresh will show a newly rendered game frame. Intel explains refresh rate and its relationship to system performance.
FPS: the rate of frame production
Frames per second (FPS) describes how many frames the computer produces each second. Game performance depends on the system, including the CPU and GPU, as well as the game and its settings. Hz belongs to the display; FPS belongs to frame production. The numbers can match, but the terms are not interchangeable.
Does a 144Hz monitor mean 144 FPS?
No. Intel’s example makes the distinction clear: a 144Hz monitor can receive a game running at 30 FPS. The monitor remains capable of 144 refreshes per second, but the game is producing only 30 frames each second. Buying a monitor with a higher refresh-rate specification does not, by itself, increase the game’s rendering rate.

How much of a high-refresh display’s capability you can use depends on whether the system can sustain higher FPS in the games you play. Check frame rates in those games rather than assuming that the monitor’s specification predicts performance.
What happens when FPS is lower than the monitor’s Hz?
The display can refresh more often than the game supplies new frames. Depending on synchronization and frame timing, the monitor may show a repeated frame or an image assembled from parts of different frames. The result may look less smooth; when output and refresh are out of sync, tearing can occur. A monitor’s maximum refresh rate does not mean the game must always run at that rate.

Why can matching FPS and Hz matter?
Fixed refresh and VSync
With a fixed-refresh display, the monitor follows its set refresh timing while the GPU produces frames at a rate that may vary. Tearing can happen if the display reads a frame buffer while a new frame is being written. Intel describes VSync as synchronizing an application’s frame rate with the monitor’s refresh rate. With VSync off, FPS can run without that synchronization, but tearing, jerkiness, or stuttering may be more likely. If a game cannot sustain the refresh-rate target, VSync can also contribute to stuttering. Intel’s VSync guidance and its gaming monitor guide describe these trade-offs.

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to track frame delivery within supported operating limits. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing a compatible display with compatible graphics cards; NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as matching monitor refresh to GPU frame rate. AMD’s example describes a compatible display in the 60–144Hz range using frame doubling with a 40 FPS input to synchronize at 80Hz. That is an illustration of how the technology can work, not a universal behavior for every display or setup. AMD FreeSync details and NVIDIA G-SYNC details explain their respective technologies.

- MSI's 23.8-inch Full HD IPS gaming monitor (1920×1080) delivers a 1500:1 contrast ratio with wide 178°/178° viewing angles — producing deeper blacks, brighter highlights, and accurate colors from virtually any position for gaming and productivity.
- TÜV Rheinland certified Flicker Free and Low Blue Light — eliminating the ~200Hz screen flicker common on standard monitors and reducing harmful blue light exposure to minimize eye strain during extended gaming or work sessions.
- 144Hz high refresh rate delivers ultra-smooth motion and sharper tracking versus standard 60Hz or 75Hz monitors — keeping every frame fluid and responsive for fast-paced FPS, racing, and action games without screen tearing or stuttering.
- MSI's built-in Eye-Q Check provides a vision assessment tool to help optimize display settings for healthier long-term viewing — designed for professionals and students spending extended hours in front of a Full HD IPS screen.
- Tilt-adjustable stand (-5°~20°) for comfortable viewing at any desk setup, with VESA 100×100mm wall mount compatibility for monitor arms, brackets, and multi-monitor arrangements — reducing neck strain during long gaming or work sessions.
VRR support depends on the specific monitor, graphics hardware, connection, drivers, and supported refresh range. Check the documentation for the exact display and GPU combination; the feature name alone does not establish compatibility. NVIDIA also provides support guidance for G-SYNC and variable render rates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose a refresh rate?
Consider the display and computer as one system rather than choosing by Hz alone. Intel recommends weighing refresh rate alongside resolution and system performance. The useful target depends on the games you play, the smoothness you want, and the FPS your hardware can sustain at your chosen resolution.

- up to 180Hz Refresh Rate: Pushing beyond the standard 144Hz, 165Hz gives gamers an edge in visibility as frames transition instantly, leaving behind no blurred images.
- IPS Panel: The IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel cannot be beat when it comes to consistently delivering top color performance and sharp visibility from multiple viewing angles.
- AMD FreeSync: With FreeSync, gamers now enjoy smooth video and seamless on the spot movement through their fast paced games. FreeSync is an AMD technology that nearly eliminates tearing and stuttering due to differences between a graphics card's frame rate and a monitor's refresh rate.
- Edgeless Design: Edgeless Design completely immerses you in all the captivating action and wondrous scenery that 1080P resolution and 165Hz refresh rate have to offer.
- Multiple Digital Ports: While three HDMI ports each deliver an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, one DisplayPort produces a stunning 165Hz refresh rate, all in FHD resolution.
- Display capability: Identify the monitor’s refresh rate in Hz.
- Real game performance: Check the FPS your CPU and GPU sustain in the games and settings you use.
- Resolution: Consider it together with refresh rate and expected system performance.
- Synchronization: If FPS varies, check whether the monitor and graphics hardware support a compatible VRR mode and operating range.
There is no single Hz or FPS target that is right for everyone. A high-refresh-rate monitor is most useful when your system can deliver frame rates that take advantage of it, while synchronization can affect how variable frame delivery looks.
