Usually, only on selected routes. Hollow-core fiber (HCF) can cut propagation latency by roughly 30–33% in published studies and vendor comparisons, while also extending the distance a network can cover within a latency budget. That advantage can justify the cost for latency-sensitive inter-data-center, metro, edge, artificial-intelligence-cluster and financial-network links. It does not yet justify replacing every conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) cable. The sound decision is a route-level business case that values saved microseconds, avoided optical equipment and data-center sites, and the flexibility to place facilities farther from constrained power or land markets.
What hollow-core fiber changes
Conventional SMF guides light through solid silica. HCF guides most of the optical signal through an air core surrounded by a structured glass layer. Because light travels faster through air than through glass, the propagation component of latency is lower. The gain applies while the signal is in the fiber; it does not automatically remove delay from switches, routers, transponders, regeneration, queuing or an exchange’s matching engine.
That distinction matters when evaluating a quotation. A vendor may describe HCF as “faster transmission,” while an operator cares about one-way route latency, round-trip time, jitter, packet loss and end-to-end application delay. Those are related but not identical measurements.

| Claim | Source and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately 30% lower latency; attenuation as low as 0.11 dB/km | 2025 IEEE/Politecnico di Milano network-optimization study | A modeled and measured technology range, not a guarantee for every cable, wavelength or installed route. |
| Approximately 33% lower latency and up to 47% faster transmission | Microsoft Azure comparison, 2025 | Azure-related comparisons; “faster transmission” is not the same metric as application response time. |
| Up to 1.5 times the reach at the same latency envelope | Microsoft technical explainer, 2024 | Potential siting and topology benefit when the route is otherwise limited by a latency target. |
| Nearly 50% faster transmission and a 60 km to 90 km example | Prysmian material; publication date not shown | An example of extending distance, not a universal 50% improvement on every deployment. |
The figures cluster around a substantial propagation advantage, but the qualification is important: they describe particular designs, routes or comparisons. Ask for a guaranteed latency budget for the exact cable, wavelength, connector set, route length and temperature range you will deploy.

Where HCF can create economic value
Fiber purchase price is only one line in the business case. The larger opportunity is changing the network design so that fewer sites, optical functions or constrained routes are needed.
Avoided edge sites and equipment
A 2025 network-optimization study modeled upgrading 25% of links to HCF. Compared with an all-SSMF design, the modeled network used up to 40% fewer edge data centers and up to 38% less network-equipment cost. A 2024 Optical Fiber Communication Conference study modeled upgrading 24% of metro links and found a 29% reduction in edge-data-center count.
These are scenario results, not promises that a quarter of your links will produce the same savings. They show the mechanism: a faster span can let traffic traverse a longer distance within the same latency constraint, allowing an operator to consolidate an edge site, remove a regeneration point, reduce transponders or avoid additional wavelength-selective switches (WSS). The value can therefore exceed the cost difference between two cable types.

A project budget should separately account for:
- duct access, rights of way and civil construction;
- cable manufacture, pulling and protection;
- splicing, connectors, patch panels and testing;
- transceivers, coherent optics, transponders, WSS units, regeneration and amplification;
- diverse protection paths and additional meet-me-room or colocation charges;
- spares, repair logistics, staff training and operational tools; and
- the cost of migration downtime or parallel operation with SMF.
Public sources do not provide a standardized HCF-versus-SMF installed premium. Obtain itemized quotes for the complete route and compare total cost of ownership, not the cable reel alone.
A four-axis data-center decision framework
Score each candidate link on four questions. A route that scores well on only one axis is rarely a strong first deployment.
1. What is each microsecond worth?
Translate latency into a financial, service-level or power consequence. For an inter-data-center replication path, the benefit may be faster commit or recovery. For an AI cluster, it may be less synchronization delay between facilities. For a customer-facing service, it may be a measurable service-level improvement. Use the value of the actual workload, not a generic claim that lower latency is always better.

Measure the incumbent route’s one-way and round-trip latency at the application endpoints. Then estimate the HCF delta for the same physical distance. Multiply the durable latency improvement by the value per microsecond or millisecond over the period in which the route will operate. Keep recurring benefits separate from one-time avoided capital expenditure.

2. Does the extra reach change where facilities can be built?
HCF is most valuable when the latency envelope, rather than raw bandwidth, constrains site selection. The stated 1.5-times reach potential could let an operator connect facilities 60 km apart over a span that previously required a site around 40 km, or extend a 60 km design toward 90 km in the type of example cited by Prysmian. The exact result depends on the route, protection design and equipment.
Map candidate power, land, cooling and permitting options. If HCF allows a facility to move away from an expensive urban location without violating the latency target, include avoided land, power and construction costs. If every viable site is already close to the users or counterparties, the reach benefit may be immaterial.
3. Which equipment or sites disappear?
Build a before-and-after topology. Count edge data centers, regeneration locations, transponders, WSS units, amplifiers, patching points and cross-connects. Price the capital and operating expense of each item, including power, floor space, maintenance contracts and failure domains. A partial HCF overlay can be worthwhile even when replacing the entire cable plant would not be.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Can your organization operate it safely?
Check connector and splice practices, optical-budget assumptions, transceiver interoperability, monitoring, repair procedures, spare availability and route protection. Microsoft reports HCF deployments across multiple Azure regions and 2025 collaborations with Corning and Heraeus intended to scale production. Prysmian reports a strategic partnership with Relativity Networks for large-scale HCF production, including complementary connectors and hardware. These are meaningful readiness signals, but they do not establish that every carrier or data-center operator can buy an interchangeable commodity system today.

Does HCF make sense for financial networks?
Financial networks can assign unusually high value to propagation delay, especially on fixed routes between colocation facilities, exchanges and matching venues. HCF is most defensible when a small physical-path improvement changes venue selection, routing priority, market-data distribution or execution economics.
Separate propagation delay from the rest of the path
Document every component between the trading application and the venue:
- fiber distance and physical route;
- optical transceivers, transponders and regeneration;
- switch and router forwarding;
- queuing under load;
- serialization and packet-size effects;
- exchange gateway and matching-engine processing; and
- application, risk-check and order-management delays.
Only the first group is directly improved by the air-core propagation advantage. If switching, queuing or venue processing dominates, a fiber upgrade may produce little observable end-to-end improvement even when the optical measurement is excellent.
Build a route-specific trading case
- Measure the incumbent SMF path in both directions, including normal and protected routes.
- Obtain an HCF design with guaranteed latency, attenuation, connector loss and maintenance assumptions for the same endpoints.
- Model the value of the measured latency delta using your own execution, market-data, colocation or service-level data.
- Price redundant HCF paths, failover behavior, spare inventory and repair windows; do not value only the primary circuit.
- Run a controlled pilot or parallel path and verify timestamped application outcomes before committing production traffic.
No public, citable benchmark establishes a universal payback period for HCF in live financial trading. A claim that a certain percentage latency reduction automatically produces trading profit would overstate the available evidence.

Should you replace existing SMF?
For most operators, an overlay is more defensible than a wholesale replacement. Keep mature SMF for ordinary access, management, backup and routes where latency has little economic value. Introduce HCF on the small set of links where its propagation, reach or topology effects can be measured.
Good first candidates
- inter-data-center links with strict replication or recovery objectives;
- metro spans constrained by a latency target but long enough for reach to matter;
- AI or high-performance-computing clusters split across sites;
- financial routes where venue or colocation economics depend on microseconds; and
- new builds where ducts are open and a future site-consolidation option has clear value.
Weak first candidates
- short campus links where propagation delay is a tiny share of total latency;
- routes dominated by congested switching, queuing or application processing;
- protected networks that cannot obtain genuinely diverse HCF paths;
- locations requiring uncommon connectors or optics with no local spares; and
- legacy plants whose remaining life is too short to recover migration costs.
How to evaluate a project step by step
- Define the service objective. State the maximum one-way or round-trip latency, availability, restoration time and bandwidth for the application.
- Baseline the incumbent. Record route length, measured latency, optical loss, equipment count, power use, recurring charges and failure history.
- Design at least two HCF options. Compare a direct span with an option that removes a regeneration or edge site. Include diverse protection, not just the shortest primary route.
- Request an itemized supplier proposal. Require cable, connectors, splicing, optics, testing, installation, support, spares, lead times and warranty terms as separate lines.
- Calculate total value. Add monetized latency benefits, avoided equipment, avoided sites and siting flexibility. Subtract capital, operating, migration and risk costs. Show conservative, expected and optimistic cases.
- Validate interoperability. Confirm that the proposed transceivers, patching, monitoring and repair process work with the equipment already in the network, or price replacement explicitly.
- Pilot the route. Carry production-like traffic over a protected test path and compare timestamped latency, loss, jitter, alarms and restoration behavior with SMF.
- Set a go/no-go threshold. Approve deployment only if the conservative case still meets the required payback or strategic objective.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
| Failure mode | Why it undermines the business case | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Using a headline “47% faster” figure as application latency | Transmission, propagation and processing are different measurements. | Require endpoint-to-endpoint latency measurements and define the metric in the contract. |
| Comparing cable prices only | Construction, optics, protection and operations can dominate the bill. | Use a complete installed-cost and five-to-ten-year operating model. |
| Assuming every route gets 1.5-times reach | The figure is an upper-bound capability, not a guaranteed topology result. | Model the exact distance, equipment and protection design. |
| Ignoring ecosystem maturity | Unavailable connectors, optics or spares can extend outages and erase savings. | Verify supply, interoperability, repair stock and trained contractors before ordering. |
| Removing redundancy to fund HCF | A faster single path is not an acceptable substitute for resilient service. | Price two physically diverse paths and failover testing from the start. |
| Deploying where processing dominates | Lower propagation delay may be invisible to users or traders. | Profile switching, queuing, application and venue delays first. |
The practical verdict
HCF is worth the cost when a specific route converts lower propagation latency or longer reach into a measurable economic outcome: an avoided edge facility, fewer optical stages, a cheaper site, a contractual latency improvement or a defensible financial-network advantage. Published figures support a meaningful physical benefit, and modeled partial deployments show that system-level savings are possible.
It is not yet a blanket replacement for SMF. Treat the USD 3–4-per-kilometer figure as a contract-specific material price, not a turnkey project quote; treat 30–33% latency reductions and 1.5-times reach as design-dependent claims; and treat production announcements as evidence of progress rather than proof of universal interoperability. For most organizations, the best path is a measured HCF overlay on a few high-value links, followed by expansion only when the route-level results meet the business case.
