Yes, but with an important qualification. Dragonsteel’s official campaign presents Hoid’s Storybook Collection as stories Hoid tells inside the Cosmere. That makes the collection canon as an in-world publication and establishes its connection to events and traditions in the setting. It does not, by itself, confirm that every creature, event, or moral in each fable is a literal, perfectly accurate record of Cosmere history.
The four illustrated hardcovers expand or reinterpret stories associated with The Stormlight Archive, plus one story originating in Dragonsteel’s 2024 Story Deck. They are best read as Hoid’s deliberately provocative tales: meaningful, canonically situated, and useful for understanding how characters and cultures think, but not a required encyclopedia of the Cosmere.
What “canon” means for Hoid’s storybooks
There are two different questions hidden in “Are these books canon?” The first is whether the books officially exist within the Cosmere’s narrative framework. The campaign answers that clearly: Hoid is the storyteller, and several books are expanded versions of stories that appear in the novels. On that level, the collection is an official Cosmere work.
The second question is whether every detail in a narrated fable happened exactly as Hoid describes it. The available official descriptions do not make that blanket claim. A story told by a character can contain symbolism, exaggeration, selective omission, or an interpretation chosen for a particular listener. Calling the collection canon therefore should not be treated as calling every sentence a documentary account of past events.

Brandon Sanderson describes the books this way: “At their core, these are stories Hoid chose to tell to provoke questions in the listener, regardless of their age.” That description makes the storytelling purpose part of the canon while leaving the factual status of individual details open. The safest formulation is: the books are canonically framed tales told by Hoid, and some draw directly on established Stormlight stories; their precise historical truth varies and is not universally confirmed.
What is in the official collection?
The Dragonsteel campaign identifies four illustrated storybooks. Their relationships to earlier Cosmere material are not identical, so the table below separates source, narrative role, and emphasis.
| Book | Connection to earlier material | In-world role | Campaign emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Dog and the Dragon | Written after Sanderson created “The Dog and the Dragon” for Rhythm of War | Hoid’s fable | Growth and acceptance; a classic children’s-book feel |
| Wandersail | Illustrated retelling of a tale Hoid shares with Kaladin in The Way of Kings | Story associated with Wit, the Bridgeman, and Derethil | Responsibility and the edge of the world; a more graphic, collectible presentation |
| The Girl Who Looked Up | Expanded from the Rosharan folk story first told by Shallan | Hoid tells the tale when Shallan needs to hear it | Curiosity and seeking answers |
| The ChasmFriends Get a Pet | Uses characters introduced in the Dragonsteel Nexus 2024 Story Deck | Illustrated story connected to that Dragonsteel product | A separate entry point from the Stormlight adaptations |
The Dog and the Dragon
This book grew from the story Sanderson wrote for Rhythm of War. Its central premise is a dog who wants to become a dragon, and the campaign associates the tale with growth and acceptance. The collection gives that short in-novel story a complete illustrated-book treatment. Its child-friendly form does not remove its Cosmere context: readers encounter it as a story Hoid chooses to tell, with the emotional purpose of reaching a listener rather than delivering a historical chronicle.

Wandersail
Wandersail expands the tale Hoid tells Kaladin in The Way of Kings. The campaign links its presentation to Wit, the Bridgeman, Derethil, responsibility, and the dangers found at the edge of the world. Dragonsteel describes this volume as having a more graphic and collectible visual approach than a conventional picture book. Its source in a scene between Hoid and Kaladin makes it one of the clearest examples of a storybook that revisits an existing Stormlight moment without replacing the novel’s version.

In the campaign description, Hoid’s story carries the line: “The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon. Too often, we forget that.” The attribution matters: this is language associated with Hoid’s story, not a separate interview in which Sanderson declares every part of the fable historical.
The Girl Who Looked Up
This is a Rosharan folk story that readers first encounter through Shallan. The campaign says Hoid tells it when Shallan needs to hear it and that Sanderson expanded it from its appearances in The Stormlight Archive. Its themes of curiosity and seeking answers make the book valuable as both a self-contained fable and a lens on Rosharan storytelling. The expanded edition can add texture and context while still preserving the distinction between a folk tradition and an objective account of the world’s past.
The ChasmFriends Get a Pet
This volume originates with characters introduced in the Dragonsteel Nexus 2024 Story Deck rather than with a previously published Stormlight chapter. That makes it the least direct adaptation of the four. It remains part of the official collection and its setting is connected to the wider Cosmere publishing program, but readers should not expect it to function as a missing scene from a Stormlight novel.
Are Hoid’s stories real events in the Cosmere?
Some source material is clearly anchored to events readers have already seen. Kaladin hears Hoid tell the story that becomes Wandersail; Shallan encounters the folk tale behind The Girl Who Looked Up; and “The Dog and the Dragon” appears in Rhythm of War before receiving its own book. Those anchors establish that the stories exist in the setting and that Hoid, Shallan, or other characters know them.

They do not establish that every narrated detail occurred literally. Fables are designed to compress ideas into memorable images, and Hoid chooses stories to provoke questions in a listener. A talking animal, an idealized journey, or a neatly shaped moral can be simultaneously meaningful and non-literal. Unless a novel or a direct author statement confirms a specific detail, treat it as part of the tale’s perspective rather than as independently verified history.
This distinction also prevents a common interpretive error: using a storybook’s imagery as a coded biography of Hoid. The books can reveal what Hoid wants a listener to consider, but they do not automatically reveal his complete identity, motives, or origin.
Where the collection fits in the larger Cosmere
Hoid is a recurring figure in Sanderson’s connected Cosmere, but his identity is intentionally left for readers to infer. Sanderson’s official Hoid FAQ states: “Hoid is a mystery which I cannot speak on other than what has been written in the text of the novels.” It adds that readers should piece together what they can from the books. The storybook collection follows that same approach: it supplies additional Hoid-related material without becoming a definitive explanation of him.

The strongest direct connection is to Roshar and The Stormlight Archive. Wandersail points to Hoid’s meeting with Kaladin in The Way of Kings; The Girl Who Looked Up grows out of Shallan’s encounters with a Rosharan folk tradition; and The Dog and the Dragon comes from Rhythm of War. The campaign also positions the stories as works with distinct visual identities rather than as a single continuous plotline.

That placement makes the books companion pieces. They enrich scenes, themes, and modes of storytelling already present in the novels, but they are not a prerequisite for understanding the wider Cosmere. Sanderson’s Cosmere guidance emphasizes that readers can begin with an individual series and encounter cross-series connections gradually. The storybooks follow the same principle: prior knowledge improves recognition, but the collection is not a gate readers must pass through before reading other Cosmere books.
Do you need to read The Stormlight Archive first?
No. You can read the storybooks as illustrated fables without completing the Cosmere. The amount of context you want should determine your starting point.
- For a self-contained reading experience: Start with any of the four books. You will understand the broad plots and themes, although references to Hoid, Kaladin, Shallan, or Roshar will carry less background.
- For the clearest Wandersail context: Read the relevant Hoid-and-Kaladin scene in The Way of Kings first.
- For the clearest The Girl Who Looked Up context: Read the Stormlight passages in which Shallan encounters and discusses the folk story.
- For the clearest The Dog and the Dragon context: Read Rhythm of War, where the story first appears.
- For broader short-fiction context: Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection is optional. Sanderson’s catalog describes it as a collection of nine works with essays and illustrations about the represented planetary systems, including the Stormlight novella Edgedancer. It is not the Hoid storybook collection and is not required for it.
If you are avoiding spoilers, read each storybook after the novel named above rather than treating the collection as an introduction to those books. The storybooks revisit ideas and scenes whose emotional effect depends on what the novels have already established.
Is this the same as Hoid’s Travails?
No. The similar names refer to different kinds of books in the campaign.

| Label | What it includes | Format and role |
|---|---|---|
| Hoid’s Storybook Collection | The Dog and the Dragon, Wandersail, The Girl Who Looked Up, and The ChasmFriends Get a Pet | Four illustrated storybooks; in-world tales and fables |
| Hoid’s Travails | Novels including Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and the further entry The Fires of December | Cosmere novels associated with Hoid’s voice or storytelling role |
The Travails novels are full-length narrative works with their own plots and settings. The storybook collection is shorter, illustrated, and organized around tales Hoid tells or stories introduced through related Dragonsteel material. Shared association with Hoid does not make the two projects interchangeable.
Formats, campaign status, and access
The campaign describes the four books as hardcovers. Eligible backers receive PDFs through BackerKit, and the campaign FAQ says the picture books are not available as audiobooks. Planned post-campaign store editions were discussed, but inventory, editions, and fulfillment can change, so current availability should be checked through Dragonsteel’s present store or retailer listings rather than inferred from campaign pledges.
The campaign ended on March 29, 2026, with 80,540 backers and $11,959,500 raised, figures recorded by Dragonsteel and BackerKit for that campaign. Those totals indicate the project’s scale, not its canon status. The page listed an estimated October 1, 2026 ship date; that was a forecast, not confirmation that every order shipped on that date.

How to interpret the books without overreading them
- Separate framing from fact: “Hoid tells this story” is an established narrative fact. “Every event in the story happened exactly this way” requires separate confirmation.
- Read for audience and purpose: Hoid selects tales to provoke questions in a particular listener. The choice of story can reveal his rhetorical aim even when the story’s imagery is symbolic.
- Keep adaptations in place: A storybook can expand a scene from The Way of Kings, Rhythm of War, or Shallan’s Rosharan material without replacing the original novel as the primary account.
- Do not use the collection as a Hoid biography: Sanderson’s FAQ deliberately limits what is confirmed about Hoid and directs readers back to the novels.
- Expect different visual and tonal treatments: The campaign presents the books as individually designed works, ranging from a collector-oriented graphic style to a classic children’s-book approach.
For readers deciding whether to buy or read them, the practical answer is straightforward: choose the collection for illustrated, in-world storytelling and added Stormlight context, not because it is a secret chronology that explains every Cosmere mystery.
