For modern devices that both have HDMI ports, HDMI is usually the better choice: one cable carries digital video and audio, and the connection supports HD and newer formats when the source and display do. If by “AV” you mean the yellow, red and white composite RCA plugs, that is an analog standard-definition connection. Older equipment may need an analog connection or an active converter to work with a modern TV.

What “AV” means in this comparison

“AV” can mean audio and video in general. In the common HDMI-versus-AV comparison, it usually means composite RCA: yellow for video, with red and white plugs for stereo audio. Sony describes composite as analog and standard definition, while HDMI carries audio and video together and supports HD video (Sony Support).

Composite is not the same as component video. Component uses three video connections—usually green, blue and red—and separate audio leads. It is also analog, but a Philips television manual describes its picture quality as better than composite and below HDMI in that manual’s context (Philips television manual).

How HDMI, composite and component differ

Connection Signal and plugs Picture and sound
HDMI One digital cable Carries audio and video together; supports HD and newer formats when both devices support them.
Composite RCA Yellow video plug plus red and white stereo-audio plugs Analog standard-definition video, with audio on separate leads.
Component video Three analog video plugs, usually green, blue and red, plus separate audio leads Generally better picture than composite in the cited Philips manual, but still analog and below HDMI in that manual’s comparison.

The exact resolution and refresh rate depend on the source, display and signal format. There is no single maximum that applies to every component-video setup. Philips sums up HDMI’s wiring advantage this way: “Both audio and video signals are combined in one HDMI cable, providing an uncompressed, digital interface between your TV and HDMI devices.” (Philips television manual, section 7.2.1)

When HDMI is the better choice

Use HDMI when the source and display both have compatible HDMI ports and you want the supported video and audio formats with fewer cables. The connection itself does not guarantee a particular resolution or feature: the devices and their settings must support the format you intend to use.

Choose among HDMI cables according to the video mode, refresh rate and capabilities of your equipment, rather than automatically buying the newest category. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s guidance says High Speed is designed for 1080p and beyond; Premium High Speed certification covers up to 18 Gbps and features including 4K at 60 Hz and HDR; Ultra High Speed supports up to 48 Gbps; and Ultra96 supports up to 96 Gbps (HDMI cable categories and certification). Check the source and display documentation, and look for the relevant official label when certification matters.

Connecting an older VCR, DVD player or game console

First check the exact output on the older device and the available inputs on the TV. If one has only composite or component and the other only HDMI, you may need an active converter. A receiver can also help if it has the right analog input and supports conversion for the signal in question; features vary by model.

  1. Identify the source output. Confirm whether the device outputs composite, component or HDMI; do not assume that all red, white and yellow-looking connections serve the same role.
  2. Check the TV or receiver input. Confirm that the destination accepts the source connection, or supports the conversion path you plan to use.
  3. Match the converter to the signal. A composite-to-HDMI converter must accept composite input; a component-to-HDMI converter must accept component input. Check whether the device is active and whether it needs power.
  4. Connect audio as well as video when required. Composite and component setups use separate audio leads; verify that your converter or receiver handles them.
  5. Set expectations for picture quality. Conversion changes the signal format so equipment can connect; it cannot create picture detail absent from the original source.

Conversion and upscaling features are model-specific. For example, the Harman Kardon AVR 370 owner’s manual documents conversion of composite and component inputs, including upscaling to 1080p; this capability should not be assumed for other receivers (Harman Kardon AVR 370 owner’s manual).

Does an RCA-to-HDMI converter make the picture HD?

No. An adapter or converter can make an analog source usable with an HDMI input, but it cannot recover detail the source never contained. Keep the source’s resolution separate from any output or scaling setting offered by the converter: a higher output setting does not mean the original picture was captured or stored at that resolution.

Choose by checking these five things

  • Supported picture mode: Check the resolution and refresh rate supported across both devices.
  • Audio wiring: HDMI carries audio and video together; composite and component setups use separate audio connections.
  • Port compatibility: Match the source output to the display or receiver input.
  • Conversion or scaling: Confirm whether any required conversion is supported by the receiver or converter, and do not mistake scaling for added source detail.
  • Cable capability: For HDMI, choose the category and certification appropriate to the system’s actual mode.

HDMI Licensing Administrator reports that almost 14 billion HDMI-enabled devices had shipped since the first HDMI specification was released in December 2002. That is an organization-published cumulative shipment figure, not a measure of active devices or proof that HDMI always produces a better result (HDMI technology overview).
