No—not as a permanent free-to-play game. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S had a limited seven-day free trial from November 11 through November 17, 2025. That promotion ended, and Rockstar said players would then need to acquire GTA Online Standalone and again meet the console online-multiplayer subscription requirement.
Your actual cost depends on platform, country, storefront promotions, and whether you choose the optional GTA+ membership. On PS5, a US PlayStation Store listing displayed GTA Online at $19.99 normally and $9.99 on sale on October 13, 2026, with PlayStation Plus required for online play. Xbox requires a console online-multiplayer subscription, but the current purchase price and exact qualifying tier vary by region. PC pricing was not established by the available official listings, so you should check the live store for your country.
What “free to play” means for GTA Online
People use “free to play” to mean several different things: a game that costs nothing to download, a temporary trial, access included with another purchase, or a game with no recurring online fee. GTA Online does not currently meet the first or last definition on consoles.
The 2025 promotion was a time-limited trial, not a permanent change to the business model. Rockstar Games Customer Support described the arrangement this way: “Once the free trial has ended, players will need to acquire GTA Online Standalone to continue playing and the requirement for PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass will be reinstated.” The support article was last updated November 11, 2025, and the stated trial dates were November 11–17, 2025.

After the trial, you therefore need to consider two separate questions on a console:
- Do you own or have access to the game? This is the one-time purchase or other eligible access route shown by your local storefront.
- Can your account play online multiplayer? PlayStation 5 requires PlayStation Plus; Xbox Series X|S requires an Xbox console online-multiplayer subscription.
Those costs are independent. Buying the game does not automatically provide the console subscription, and paying for the subscription does not by itself purchase GTA Online.

How much is GTA Online on PS5?
The US PlayStation Store listing observed October 13, 2026, showed an original price of $19.99 and a discounted display price of $9.99 for GTA Online. The sale amount is not a permanent price. It can expire, differ in another country, or be replaced by a different promotion.
Do not convert that display into a worldwide price. PlayStation Store prices, taxes, currency, editions, and promotions are tied to the account region. The amount that matters is the one shown after you sign in to your own store.

Do you need PS Plus to play GTA Online?
Yes. The same PS5 listing states that PlayStation Plus is required for online play. Treat this as a separate recurring platform cost. A discounted game purchase can reduce the one-time entry price, but it does not remove the online-multiplayer requirement.
How to check the complete PS5 cost
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5 or use the store for your account region.
- Search for “GTA Online” and select the PS5 standalone listing, checking that it is not a different edition or a bundle.
- Record the displayed purchase price, including whether it is labeled as a sale and when the offer ends.
- Open the listing’s online-play information and confirm the PlayStation Plus requirement.
- Check your account’s PlayStation Plus options separately and add that recurring amount to the game price when budgeting.
Xbox Series X|S: standalone access and online multiplayer
Is GTA Online free on Xbox?
No permanent free access is established. Xbox Series X|S had the same November 11–17, 2025 trial window described above. Once it ended, Rockstar’s stated model required players to acquire GTA Online Standalone and restored the console online-subscription requirement.

The Xbox Store listing says that a console online-multiplayer subscription is required. Subscription names and included benefits have changed over time and can differ by region, so it is safer to verify the current qualifying tier in your local store than to assume a particular “Game Pass” name applies everywhere.
In practical terms, budget for both the standalone game and the Xbox subscription shown as eligible for online multiplayer on your account. The available official listing did not establish a dependable current US purchase price for the game, so no universal Xbox dollar figure should be inferred from an old sale or another country’s store.
How to check the complete Xbox cost
- Open the Microsoft or Xbox Store while signed in to the account that will play.
- Search for the standalone GTA Online listing and verify the console generation and edition.
- Note the current one-time price and any displayed promotion end date.
- Read the listing’s online-multiplayer requirement.
- Review the subscription options offered to your account and region, then include that recurring charge in your total.
PC access: what is known and what must be checked
PC is a supported platform, and Rockstar’s GTA+ eligibility guidance specifically identifies PC Enhanced. However, the available official results did not establish a current PC base-game price. That means a precise dollar total would risk importing an outdated price, a different edition, or another region’s currency.

Check the current PC storefront for your country and confirm whether the listing is PC Enhanced or PC Legacy before buying. The edition matters because GTA+ benefits are tied to supported versions; PC Legacy is not listed as receiving GTA+ benefits.

GTA+: optional membership, not a requirement
What GTA+ provides in this cost question
GTA+ is a recurring Rockstar membership separate from buying GTA Online and separate from the console service that enables online multiplayer. Rockstar says it supports PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced. A US Rockstar Store page displayed $7.99 per month for PC on October 13, 2026. That is a US storefront amount, not a global price.
The membership renews until canceled. It can include benefits inside the supported game ecosystem, but the fact that it is sold alongside GTA Online does not make it necessary for ordinary access.
Is GTA+ required?
No. You can budget for the game and, on consoles, the required online-multiplayer subscription without adding GTA+. GTA+ also does not replace PlayStation Plus on PS5 or the Xbox online-multiplayer subscription requirement stated by the Xbox listing.

Use a simple two-part calculation rather than calling the game “free” because a trial once existed:
- One-time access cost: the current local price for GTA Online Standalone or the eligible PC edition.
- Recurring access cost: the console online-multiplayer subscription, if you play on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Then decide separately whether to add GTA+. For a console player, the formula is:
first-year total = game purchase + required console online subscription(s) + optional GTA+ payments
Do not use the $9.99 PS5 sale price as a recurring monthly fee, and do not add the $7.99 GTA+ figure to every player’s bill. The former was a one-time discounted game display in the US store; the latter was an optional US PC membership display.

Common mistakes that make GTA Online look free
Confusing a trial with permanent access
The November 2025 event lasted seven days. A player who downloaded or played during that window did not receive an indefinite license. After November 17, continued play required the standalone game under Rockstar’s stated terms.
Counting only the game price
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, online play has a platform-subscription condition. A calculation that includes only the game purchase understates the cost of actually joining multiplayer.
Assuming one country’s price applies everywhere
The $19.99, $9.99, and $7.99 figures are US storefront observations from October 13, 2026. Taxes, currency conversion, promotions, and eligibility can produce a different total in another region.
Treating GTA+ as the online pass
GTA+ is a Rockstar membership. It is not the console online-multiplayer service identified by the PlayStation and Xbox listings. Buying GTA+ does not remove a separate console requirement.
Buying the wrong edition
On PC, check whether the product is Enhanced or Legacy before purchasing, especially if you are considering GTA+ benefits. On consoles, verify that the listing matches PS5 or Xbox Series X|S rather than an older-generation edition.
What to verify before you pay
- Your account country and currency.
- The exact platform and edition listed on the product page.
- Whether the displayed game price is a sale and when it ends.
- The online-multiplayer requirement shown for your console.
- The current subscription price and renewal terms.
- Whether GTA+ is optional for your intended use and supported on your version.
- Any regional restrictions or differences in PC Enhanced availability.
Because prices, subscription labels, promotional periods, GTA+ benefits, and regional support can change, the local PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and Rockstar GTA+ listing are the final authority immediately before purchase.
