No. The official U.S. record lists Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+, not AO (Adults Only) 18+. A worldwide Adults Only classification has not been established by final records from every major regional rating board.
What rating does GTA 6 have in the United States?
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) lists Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+. The official record gives these content descriptors:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
Grand Theft Auto VI - PlayStation 5 (Code in Box, Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26) | $79.99 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |
|
IRIPLEZO Grand Theft Auto V | $24.32 | Buy on Amazon |
| 3 |
|
RIDE 5 - PS5 | $27.96 | Buy on Amazon |
| 4 |
|
Carmen Sandiego 40th Anniversary Edition PS5 | $36.97 | Buy on Amazon |

Far Cry 6 PlayStation 5 Gold Steelbook Edition | $69.99 | Buy on Amazon |
- Blood and gore
- Intense violence
- Mature humor
- Nudity
- Strong language
- Strong sexual content
- Use of drugs and alcohol
- In-game purchases
In the ESRB system, M means the content is intended for players ages 17 and older. It is not the same category as AO, which is reserved for content suitable only for adults 18 and older.
Mature 17+ and Adults Only 18+ are different ESRB categories
| ESRB category | Minimum age shown by the label | What the category means |
|---|---|---|
| Mature 17+ | 17+ | Content may include intense violence, sexual material, strong language and other mature themes. |
| Adults Only 18+ | 18+ | Content is classified as suitable only for adults. |
Calling the game “Adults Only” changes the meaning of the official U.S. classification. The ESRB record does not support an AO 18+ claim.

Is GTA 6 rated 18 in every major market?
That worldwide claim remains unverified. Rating agencies operate independently, and a label that resembles “18” in one country is not automatically equivalent to the ESRB’s AO category. The name, age threshold, descriptors and enforcement practices can all differ.
| Jurisdiction or board | Confirmed status in the available official record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| United States — ESRB | Final listing: M for Mature 17+ | Confirmed U.S. classification; not AO 18+. |
| PEGI, Europe | Not established here | Requires a final PEGI record for the relevant release. |
| CERO, Japan | Not established here | Requires a final CERO record; its categories are not interchangeable with ESRB labels. |
| USK, Germany | Not established here | Requires a final USK classification and its applicable sales conditions. |
| Australia and other markets | Not established here | Each national board must be checked separately. |
Reports describing an adult classification in one region cannot be expanded into “Adults Only everywhere” without official records from the other boards. A regional rating can also be provisional, while a final classification may appear later or differ between physical and downloadable releases.

Can teenagers buy GTA 6?
The U.S. M 17+ label is an age recommendation and content warning, not an AO classification. Whether a teenager can purchase or access the game depends on the retailer’s policy, the platform account’s parental controls and any local law. The ESRB listing alone does not establish a universal legal sales ban for every teenager or every seller.

Parents and guardians should check the rating details, the account’s age settings and the seller’s rules for their jurisdiction. The in-game-purchases descriptor also signals that spending controls may be relevant when the game is used by a supervised account.

Which versions and platforms are officially identified?
Rockstar’s official product page identifies Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and provides the publisher’s launch and pre-order information. Availability, release timing and retailer stock can vary by region and by the date you check, so a U.S. ESRB result should not be treated as a worldwide release or purchasing notice.
How to verify a regional rating before buying
- Search the local rating board. Use the board that serves the country where the console or disc will be used, and search for the exact title, Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Check whether the result is final. Do not treat a retailer tag, leak or provisional entry as the board’s final classification.
- Read the descriptors. Age labels alone do not show which elements triggered the classification.
- Match the edition and platform. Physical, digital and later editions can display different records or additional notices.
- Confirm the seller’s policy. Retailers and platform stores may apply their own age-verification or parental-control rules.
Why the “Adults Only everywhere” headline is misleading
The claim combines two separate ideas: the game contains explicit mature content, and every rating authority has assigned an adults-only label. The first is supported by the ESRB descriptors. The second is not established. “Mature 17+,” “18” and “Adults Only” are labels from different systems with different definitions, so they should not be used as synonyms.

For context, the ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. That is a general industry statistic, not a statistic about GTA 6 and not evidence of any particular regional classification for it.
What is confirmed right now?
The dependable conclusion is narrow: in the United States, GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+, with warnings for violence, blood and gore, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, drugs and alcohol, and in-game purchases. A claim that it is AO 18+ in every major market needs final, board-by-board confirmation and should not be presented as fact without it.
