No official confirmation has been established that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to Nintendo Switch 2. The Nintendo executive comment implied by the headline could not be identified, and Rockstar’s official GTA VI page, as reviewed for this article, did not establish a Switch 2 edition. That leaves the platform claim unconfirmed—not proof that a release will never happen.
Did Nintendo confirm GTA 6 for Switch 2?
No attributable Nintendo statement confirming GTA VI for Switch 2 is identified in the material reviewed. The exact executive, wording, date, and original interview or publication behind the claim remain unknown, so it should not be described as an official Nintendo announcement.

There is a separate, confirmed Nintendo announcement about the console itself. In its April 2, 2025 Switch 2 launch announcement, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the system as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch.” That statement concerns the console’s direction; it does not mention GTA VI or promise a particular third-party game.

What do Rockstar’s official materials say about a Switch 2 version?
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page, as reviewed for this article, did not establish a Nintendo Switch 2 version. This is a statement about what the reviewed page confirms, not a prediction about every future platform announcement. Without an attributable Rockstar announcement, a Switch 2 edition remains unconfirmed.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
There are therefore no confirmed GTA VI Switch 2 release details to compare or report. Claims about a release date, resolution, frame rate, or technical compromises would go beyond the established information.
Does Switch 2 backward compatibility mean GTA 6 will work?
No. Nintendo says Switch 2 can play Nintendo Switch games, but warns that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. For game-specific compatibility, Nintendo directs players to the relevant third-party publisher. This general policy does not confirm that GTA VI—whether as a Switch game or a separate Switch 2 release—will be available or playable on the system.
Nintendo’s shareholder-meeting notice says Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, and describes it as the successor to Nintendo Switch. That context and the system’s support for compatible Switch games do not amount to confirmation of a particular GTA VI edition.

Do Switch 2’s hardware specifications prove it can run GTA 6?
No. Nintendo’s April 2025 launch announcement lists a built-in 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution, 256 GB of internal storage, and improved CPU and GPU performance compared with the original Switch. Those specifications describe the hardware; they do not establish that Rockstar has ported GTA VI, announced support, or confirmed how the game would perform.
Hardware capability and a released or announced port are different questions. Without a publisher announcement or title-specific compatibility information, the specifications cannot settle whether GTA VI will come to Switch 2.
What did the former Rockstar developer say?
GamesRadar+ reported on September 25, 2026, that former Rockstar open-world designer Jérémy Hartvick—reported to have worked on GTA VI from 2017 through 2020—did not think a Switch 2 port made sense for its audience. The report quoted him saying, “I don’t believe it even makes sense, because I’m not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch,” and, “If you’re a GTA fan, you would probably buy a console on which GTA will come out.”

What would count as confirmation?
A reliable confirmation would be an attributable announcement from Rockstar or an official Nintendo publication that names GTA VI and Switch 2 as a supported platform. Until then, distinguish the available evidence carefully:
Quick Recap
- Official platform announcement: none is established in the reviewed materials.
- Backward-compatibility policy: applies to compatible Switch games generally and does not confirm GTA VI support.
- Hardware specifications: describe Switch 2, but do not verify a port.
- Former developer commentary: expresses an individual view, not a company commitment.
