Grammarly’s paid plan is worth considering when you repeatedly need features the free plan does not include—such as full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustments, or a larger AI prompt allowance. If basic corrections and tone detection handle your usual writing, start with Free. For web purchases, Grammarly now generally calls its paid plan Pro; Premium remains available through Apple App Store and Google Play.

What changed: Grammarly Premium is now generally Pro

For direct web purchases, Grammarly’s current paid plan is called Pro. Grammarly says direct-web Premium subscribers are being moved to Pro gradually without a price increase. Premium is still offered through Apple App Store and Google Play, where its listed feature set includes sentence rewrites, tone suggestions, plagiarism detection, and 1,000 monthly generative AI prompts. Check the plan and terms shown in your account before making a change.

Grammarly says Pro trials are offered periodically. Its plans page currently presents a seven-day trial, but availability can vary; the upgrade screen is the place to confirm whether an offer is available to you.

When paying for Pro makes sense

You often revise whole sentences

Free focuses on basic writing support. Pro adds one-click sentence rewrites, which may be useful if you routinely need to reshape wording rather than correct individual issues. Consider how often that task comes up in your actual work.

You need to shift tone or support fluent English

Pro adds tone adjustments and fluent-English support. These are more relevant if you regularly adapt writing for different audiences or want help with English phrasing than if basic correction already meets your needs.

You use AI prompts frequently

Free includes 100 AI prompts a month; Pro includes 2,000 per member each month. That higher allowance matters only if you actually use those prompts and find them useful for recurring writing tasks.

You need Pro-only detection features

Pro includes plagiarism and AI-generated-text detection. If either feature is important to your workflow, weigh that specific need against the recurring cost rather than assuming that a longer feature list automatically makes the subscription worthwhile.

How to decide without overcommitting

  1. Start with your normal tasks. Use Free if its basic writing support and tone detection cover what you regularly write.
  2. Name the missing capability. Identify a recurring task that would benefit from Pro, such as rewriting complete sentences, adjusting tone, or using more AI prompts. If you cannot identify one, there may be little reason to pay.
  3. Compare billing commitments. At the US list price, annual billing is $12 per member per month, or $144 per member for a year. Monthly billing is $30 per member per month and offers more flexibility. Compare these with the current regional checkout price and any trial terms.
  4. Try it on real work if an offer is available. Use a trial, if presented to you, on an actual assignment or work week. Compare what Pro contributes beyond Free, including whether you use the paid features often enough to justify continuing.

This is a practical way to evaluate the subscription, not a guarantee of improved writing or a measured return on investment. Grammarly’s statements about its reach and customer testimonials are vendor-published claims, not independent evidence that an individual subscription will deliver value.

Verdict: choose based on recurring use

Grammarly Pro is most compelling for writers who repeatedly need its paid-only features and expect to use them enough to justify the price. If Free already handles your regular work, stay with it. There is no universal return-on-investment figure that establishes Pro as worthwhile for every writer; the answer depends on your workflow, frequency of use, and regional price.
