Yes—if you want Jin Sakai’s complete story, the Iki Island expansion, and Legends multiplayer. You do not need to play it to understand Ghost of Yōtei, however. Yōtei introduces Atsu, takes place roughly 300 years later, and is designed as a standalone adventure.
For a new player choosing one purchase, the decision comes down to content and platform: Director’s Cut is the broader value package and works on PS4 or PS5, while Yōtei is the newer PS5-only experience. Existing PS4 owners should check Sony’s official upgrade route before buying another copy.
What is the short answer?
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is worth buying alongside Ghost of Yōtei when you want the original game’s full campaign and additional content—not because it is required homework for Yōtei. PlayStation describes Yōtei as “not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.” Its protagonist is Atsu, its setting is 1600s rural Japan, and the story occurs 300 years after Jin Sakai’s adventure.
That makes the two games connected by setting, themes and design philosophy rather than by a continuous plot. You can start with Yōtei, start with Tsushima, or play them in release order without missing essential story information.

What you actually receive in Director’s Cut
The complete original campaign
The package contains the full Ghost of Tsushima story, following Jin Sakai as he responds to the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. If you have never played, this is the version that gives you the original single-player campaign rather than a stripped-down base release.
The Iki Island story expansion
Iki Island is included, not sold as a separate add-on in this package. It expands Jin’s story with a new island, quests, characters and combat situations. The expansion is best played after you have progressed through the main campaign far enough to understand Jin’s history and abilities; starting it immediately can expose you to tougher encounters and story context intended for an experienced character.
Legends online co-op
Legends is a separate cooperative mode built around shared missions, survival activities and class-based play. It is not required for the campaign and does not replace the Iki Island story. Online play requires the network access and account conditions applicable to your PlayStation setup, so check the current console requirements before assuming every feature works offline.
PS5-specific improvements
The PS5 version adds features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, along with the technical improvements associated with the Director’s Cut release. If you are moving from PS4 to PS5, use the official upgrade option instead of paying for a second full-price copy when your edition qualifies.

Do you need Tsushima before Yōtei?
No. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s launch release calls Yōtei “a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan.” PlayStation’s product description likewise says it is not a direct sequel. The new lead character, later historical period and independent narrative mean there is no prerequisite campaign, character arc or ending you must know.
Playing Tsushima first can still be worthwhile for three reasons:
- You will recognize the design and thematic lineage that Yōtei develops, including the use of landscape, stealth, swordplay and legend.
- You can experience Sucker Punch’s earlier interpretation of samurai drama before seeing how the newer game changes the formula.
- You receive a substantial standalone game while deciding whether Yōtei’s newer features justify its PS5 price.
Those are optional benefits, not entry requirements. If your priority is simply to play the latest release, begin with Yōtei.

Choose Director’s Cut first if you are new to both games
Director’s Cut is the stronger first purchase when you value the most content per game: a complete campaign, a substantial expansion and an additional online mode. It also gives PS4 owners a way to play without buying a PS5 immediately. The physical PS5 disc is the clearest permanent-copy route for people who do not want their access tied to a subscription catalog.

Use the exact product name Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 when searching for that disc, and confirm that the listing is the expanded Director’s Cut package rather than a used base-game copy or a region-specific edition with different contents.
Choose Yōtei first if you only want the newest PS5 adventure
Yōtei is the appropriate first purchase if you own a PS5 and want the current game with its new protagonist and later setting. Its Standard Edition launched at a $69.99 MSRP on October 2, 2025; the Digital Deluxe Edition launched at $79.99. Those are launch MSRPs from Sony Interactive Entertainment, not a guarantee of the price you will see in October 2026.
Buy both when you want two separate historical stories
Buying both is reasonable when you are interested in the setting and want two complete campaigns rather than a direct continuation. Treat them as companion works: Tsushima establishes the earlier world and Jin’s perspective, while Yōtei offers a new character and period.
How the Yōtei Complete Edition changes the comparison
On October 1, 2026, Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition launched with the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion, Most Wanted solo mode and Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op content. This gives Yōtei its own expanded package, so the comparison is no longer between a standard new game and an expanded older one.

The editions still serve different purposes. Director’s Cut remains the way to obtain Jin’s campaign, Iki Island and Tsushima Legends. Yōtei Complete Edition is the way to obtain Atsu’s adventure and the additional Yōtei content. No documented fact makes one edition a replacement for the other.
What is the cheapest legitimate way to get Director’s Cut?
If you own the PS4 version
Sony’s current PlayStation Store listing documents a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade for $29.99. Eligibility can depend on the edition and the account that owns it, so open the game hub or store page while signed into the purchasing account and confirm that the upgrade option appears before paying.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the qualifying PS4 game.
- Open the Ghost of Tsushima product page on your PS5 or through the account’s game library.
- Look for the Director’s Cut PS5 upgrade option and verify the displayed price is $29.99.
- Complete the purchase, then download the PS5 version from your library.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted when required by your license; a disc-based upgrade generally uses the disc as proof of ownership.
The $29.99 figure is the price documented in the current store listing and may change. Do not assume that every second-hand disc, regional edition or promotional copy qualifies.

If you want permanent ownership
Sony Direct sells a physical PS5 disc containing the expanded Director’s Cut package. A disc is preferable when you want access independent of a subscription catalog, expect to replay the game years from now, or prefer to lend or resell physical games where local rules allow. Confirm the disc’s region, condition and included content before ordering.
If you only want a digital copy
Use the PlayStation Store listing and compare its current price with the $29.99 upgrade and any subscription access available on your account. Sony’s current official listings do not publish a standalone Director’s Cut price, so do not treat an old sale price or launch figure as a current recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you play Iki Island?
Iki Island becomes available after you reach the relevant point in the main Tsushima campaign. For most players, completing more of the core story first provides the strongest narrative context and a better-equipped character. You can return to other activities later, so there is no need to rush into the expansion as soon as its map marker appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompleting Iki Island before finishing every remaining Tsushima quest is possible, but it can change the pacing of Jin’s personal arc. If story continuity matters most, finish the main campaign before treating Iki as an epilogue-style extension.
Is Legends worth considering in the purchase?
Legends adds value only if you expect to play cooperatively or enjoy repeatable challenge modes. It does not add chapters to Jin’s main campaign and does not explain Yōtei’s story. A solo-focused buyer should assign most of Director’s Cut’s value to the campaign and Iki Island; a player with friends who want co-op has an additional reason to choose the complete package.
Yōtei Complete Edition now has its own Legends co-op content, so buying Tsushima specifically for multiplayer is no longer the only option within the series. Choose based on which game’s setting, combat feel and available player group you prefer.
PS4, PS5 and upgrade pitfalls
- Buying the wrong edition: Check for the words “Director’s Cut” and confirm whether the listing is for PS4, PS5 or a cross-generation entitlement.
- Assuming the upgrade is universal: The $29.99 path is documented for qualifying PS4 ownership. Verify eligibility on your account before checkout.
- Confusing catalog access with ownership: A PlayStation Plus Extra download depends on an active membership and continued catalog availability.
- Expecting Yōtei to run on PS4: Yōtei is a PlayStation 5 release, while Director’s Cut supports both PS4 and PS5.
- Starting Iki too early: The expansion is designed around a developed character and established story context.
- Paying a launch price in a sale period: Yōtei’s $69.99 and $79.99 figures are launch MSRPs from 2025. Check the current store price, bundles and edition contents on the day you buy.
- Assuming the Complete Edition replaces Tsushima: Yōtei’s Complete Edition expands Yōtei; it does not include Jin’s campaign or Iki Island.
A practical buying decision
- Identify your console. If you only have a PS4, Director’s Cut is the available choice between these two games. If you have a PS5, either game is possible.
- Decide whether you need a connected story. If you require a direct sequel, neither purchase works that way; Yōtei is standalone.
- Count the content you will use. Choose Director’s Cut for the campaign, Iki Island and Tsushima Legends. Choose Yōtei for Atsu’s newer adventure and its Complete Edition additions.
- Check access before price. PS Plus Extra may already provide Director’s Cut, and qualifying PS4 owners may have the $29.99 upgrade.
- Choose ownership style. Select the physical PS5 disc for a permanent copy, or use digital and subscription access when convenience matters more than long-term control.
- Buy the second game later if needed. Because the narratives are independent, there is no gameplay penalty for postponing either title.
Final recommendation by player type
| If you are… | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first-time player with a PS4 | Director’s Cut | It is the compatible complete Tsushima package; Yōtei is PS5-only. |
| A first-time PS5 owner seeking maximum included content | Director’s Cut, then Yōtei | You get Jin’s campaign, Iki Island and Legends before moving to Atsu’s standalone story. |
| A PS5 owner who wants only the newest release | Yōtei or Yōtei Complete Edition | No Tsushima knowledge is required. |
| An existing PS4 owner upgrading consoles | Use the $29.99 upgrade if eligible | It may cost less than buying Director’s Cut again. |
| A PlayStation Plus Extra subscriber | Check the Game Catalog first | Director’s Cut is listed there, subject to catalog changes. |
| A collector or offline owner | Physical Director’s Cut PS5 disc | The disc provides a permanent copy rather than subscription-based access. |
Bottom line
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut remains a worthwhile purchase in 2026 because it delivers a complete, self-contained Jin Sakai adventure, Iki Island and Legends. Ghost of Yōtei does not make it obsolete and does not require it. Buy Director’s Cut for that earlier story and broader cross-generation access; buy Yōtei for Atsu’s new PS5 adventure; buy both only when you want two independent chapters of the series rather than one continuous sequel.
