Gemini Auto Browse is useful, but it is not risk-free. In Chrome’s agent mode, Gemini can navigate sites you are already signed in to, use connected personal context, and send information to websites to complete a task. Google labels the feature experimental and says its safeguards do not guarantee protection. Use it for reversible, low-sensitivity work that you can watch in real time; keep financial, medical, legal, workplace and other high-impact actions under direct human control.
What Gemini Auto Browse does
Auto Browse is Gemini in Chrome’s agent mode. Instead of merely answering a question, it can carry out a multi-step web task: search for products, assemble travel options, make a restaurant reservation, draft or send communications, schedule a calendar event, complete an administrative form, and perform similar browser work.
Google describes Gemini in Chrome working as an agent as “an experimental feature.” You are expected to review Gemini’s proposed plan before it starts, and you can stop the task or take over the browser at any time. That makes Auto Browse different from a conventional search assistant: it can cause real-world changes rather than only display information.

It is whether the requested action is appropriate to delegate, whether the accounts and information in the browser are suitably limited, and whether you are watching closely enough to catch a mistake before it matters.

What Gemini can see and use

Because Auto Browse works inside your existing browser, opening a task while several sensitive tabs or accounts are available increases the consequences of an error. A task that looks harmless—such as comparing prices—can still encounter an account dashboard, private document or personal profile if the workflow reaches one.
Can Gemini see your passwords?
Google says Password Manager does not share passwords with Gemini. If you authorize sign-in help, Gemini can use Password Manager and Sign in with Google to complete authentication for a permitted site, but that is different from revealing the password to the model. The permission is a separate control and can be withdrawn.
Only grant sign-in assistance for a specific site and a specific task. When the task is finished, remove access you no longer need by opening Chrome Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions. Do not treat the no-password-sharing statement as a promise that every page in a signed-in account is safe to delegate; account content can still be visible to an agent operating in that session.
The main risks
Indirect prompt injection
Web pages, email messages, documents and multimedia can contain instructions designed to manipulate an agent. Those instructions may tell Gemini to ignore your goal, reveal private information, send a message, or perform an unrelated action. Google’s security guidance calls indirect prompt injection the primary new threat facing agentic browsers because the hostile instruction can arrive as page content rather than as something you intentionally typed.

A page can therefore be untrusted even when the site itself is familiar. Treat text displayed by a site as data to evaluate, not as authority to follow. If Gemini suddenly changes its plan, asks for information unrelated to the task, or attempts to open an unexpected account, stop the run and take over.
Ordinary execution errors
Google warns that Gemini may misunderstand a page or your instruction, click the wrong control, choose the wrong quantity, submit an incorrect form, complete an unintended purchase, or report that a task is complete when it is not. These are ordinary automation failures rather than attacks, but the result can be just as disruptive.
Ambiguous requests increase this risk. “Book the cheapest flight” leaves open questions about airports, baggage, layovers, refundability and passenger details. State constraints explicitly, inspect the proposed plan, and verify every total, date, recipient and quantity immediately before submission.
Exposure through sensitive accounts
Risk rises when Chrome is signed in to financial, legal, medical, employment, education or personal accounts. Google advises close monitoring for such tasks. A browser agent may encounter information that was not needed for the original request, and a mistaken click can change data, submit a form or trigger a transaction.

Disclosure to third parties
Gemini may share information needed to complete the task with the websites it selects. That can include your name, contact details, files, preferences and information that may be sensitive. Before starting, identify every third party likely to receive data and decide whether the convenience is worth that disclosure.
Safeguards Google provides—and what they do not prevent
- Plan review: Gemini presents a plan for you to inspect before work begins.
- Confirmation prompts: Google says prompts should appear before sending communications, changing data, submitting forms, scheduling events, or accessing highly sensitive financial or health sites.
- Take-over: You can take control of the task, particularly for financial transactions, accepting terms and conditions, and creating accounts.
- Stop control: A running task can be stopped from the task tab.
- Site restrictions: Chrome provides controls to limit where Auto Browse may operate.
- Permission gates: Password Manager and Sign in with Google access require permission and can be revoked.
These controls reduce risk; they do not eliminate it. Google explicitly says Chrome’s Auto Browse safeguards do not guarantee protection against all risks and states that monitoring your tasks is the most important protection. Confirmation is not a substitute for reading what is about to be sent or changed: an incorrect action can still look plausible on a confirmation screen.
How to use Auto Browse more safely
- Choose a reversible task. Start with research, sorting, drafting or comparison work. Avoid purchases, money movement, legal acceptance, medical submissions, account recovery and deletion.
- Reduce browser exposure. Close unrelated tabs, sign out of sensitive accounts, and use a separate Chrome profile for agent tasks. Do not run Auto Browse in a profile containing more access than the task requires.
- Minimize connected context. Review which Connected Apps, Workspace data, chats, tasks, location and personalization features Gemini can use. Disable connections that are not necessary for the job.
- Write a constrained instruction. Specify the exact site, dates, budget, quantity, recipients and a requirement to stop before any purchase, submission, sign-in or acceptance of terms.
- Inspect the plan. Check the sites Gemini intends to visit, the information it expects to use, and every consequential step before selecting the start control.
- Watch the task live. Compare the page, fields and totals with your request. Stop immediately if Gemini opens an unexpected domain, reads unrelated content or changes its objective.
- Take over at the commitment point. Handle payments, account creation, terms acceptance, health or financial forms and other irreversible actions yourself.
- Verify the result independently. Check order status, recipients, calendar entries, account changes and confirmation numbers on the relevant site rather than relying only on Gemini’s completion message.
- Clean up permissions. Remove temporary sign-in permission, close the task, sign out where appropriate and review the sites visited in Chrome history.
How to turn off Gemini browsing and sign-in access
Disable browsing when you do not need it
Turn off Let Gemini browse for you when you want Gemini to answer without operating websites. If a task is already running, use the stop control in the task tab or take over the browser. Disabling browsing prevents new delegated browsing, but it does not undo a message, booking or account change already submitted; verify those separately.
Remove Password Manager permission
Open Chrome Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions, then remove the sign-in permission you granted. Do this after a one-time sign-in task and whenever you no longer trust the current browser profile. Removing permission does not delete the underlying account or change credentials; it stops Gemini from using that authorization path.

Review activity and browser history
Review visited sites in Chrome history to see where the agent went. Separately, manage or delete Gemini Apps activity in your Google account. Google Safety Centre says Gemini Apps activity is set by default to auto-delete after 18 months, but you can shorten that period, lengthen it or turn retention off. Retention settings affect stored activity; they do not prevent a third-party site from retaining information it received during a task.
Which tasks are appropriate to delegate?

This framework uses four questions: How sensitive is the account? Is the action reversible? How much connected personal context is available? Does the workflow require sign-in? The more “high” answers you have, the more the task belongs under direct manual control.

Google’s current Chrome information says Auto Browse is available only to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. The Help eligibility conditions listed by Google include being at least 18 years old, using a personal Google account, running a current version of Chrome, using English as the device language, and not using Incognito mode.

Daily capacity is also plan-specific: Google lists up to 20 multi-step requests for AI Pro and up to 200 for AI Ultra in 2026. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a guaranteed allotment for every account or day. Availability, limits and eligibility can change, so check the current Chrome and Gemini Help pages in your account before relying on the feature.

What to do when something goes wrong
Gemini visits an unexpected site or asks for unrelated information
Stop the task and take over. Do not provide the requested information merely because it appeared in a page instruction. Close the unexpected page, review which tabs and accounts were exposed, and change permissions or sign out if the task reached a sensitive service.
The wrong form, quantity or recipient is selected
Do not continue to the confirmation step. Correct the fields manually, or abandon the task and restart with a narrower instruction. If a submission already occurred, use the site’s cancellation or correction process and verify the resulting status directly.
Gemini says it finished, but you cannot verify the result
Assume the task is unconfirmed. Check the destination site, email, calendar or account activity yourself. Look for duplicate submissions before trying again, because repeating a failed-looking task can create two purchases, messages or bookings.

You granted sign-in access by mistake
Remove it through Chrome Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions. Then review account activity and active sessions on the affected site. If the site shows an unexpected change, use its own security and recovery controls.
Bottom line: is Gemini Auto Browse safe?
Auto Browse is suitable for monitored, low-consequence tasks when you limit the browser profile, minimize connected context and keep final commitments manual. It is not appropriate to treat as an unattended operator for sensitive accounts or irreversible actions. Gemini can work in signed-in sites, use personal context and disclose necessary information to third parties; prompt injection and simple navigation mistakes remain possible. Confirmation prompts, take-over controls, site restrictions and permission gates are valuable safeguards, but the decisive control is still a person watching the task and stopping it before an unsafe action occurs.
