Gboard is not an all-or-nothing privacy choice. According to Google’s published Gboard Help documentation, ordinary text such as passwords and chats is not sent to Google, while searches, standard talk-to-text audio, usage statistics, optional audio donations, and some newer editing features do involve Google services. Your practical risk depends on which features you enable and what you type or dictate.
Google’s published help pages describe product practices; they do not independently verify how every version behaves. The safest way to use Gboard is to understand each data flow, disable features you do not need, and remove learned data periodically.
What Gboard says it sends—and does not send
Google’s official Gboard privacy and troubleshooting help separates ordinary keyboard input from optional functions:

These statements should not be stretched into either extreme. Gboard does not, according to Google’s disclosure, send every keystroke to Google; nor does it keep all spoken or typed data on the phone under every feature.

How each major feature changes the privacy picture
Ordinary typing and password entry
Google places passwords, chats, and other non-search typing under “What Gboard doesn’t send to Google” in its help documentation. This is Google’s published description of the product, not proof that every version, manufacturer build, or future feature behaves identically. A keyboard still has access to text while it is providing suggestions, so install updates from the official app store and review any feature that asks to process text outside the basic keyboard.
Search inside Gboard
Gboard’s search button is a separate Google service. Queries typed there are sent to Google to return results, even if ordinary text entered in another app is not. Do not use the in-keyboard search field for sensitive names, account numbers, medical details, or confidential work unless you accept that transfer.
Standard voice typing
When you tap the microphone and use normal talk-to-text, Google says voice is sent to Google for transcription. This is different from typing on the keyboard and different from the newer “advanced voice typing” mode described below. If you do not need dictation, denying microphone access or leaving the microphone unused removes this particular input path.
Federated learning and personalization
Google’s “Learn how Gboard gets better” page says federated learning sends what Gboard learns rather than the text you spoke or typed. Google describes the process as running while the phone is charging, connected to Wi-Fi, and idle, with learnings combined with those from other users to improve speech and typing models. Google also says federated learning is on by default and can be turned off.
That distinction matters: a model update is not the same thing as uploading your complete conversation, but it is still a form of information leaving the device. Google’s explanation alone does not independently verify the implementation.

Voluntary audio donations
Audio donations are a separate, optional setting. If you accept, Google says audio snippets are sent to and stored by Google to improve speech recognition. A snippet can contain up to 15 seconds of speech, or up to 25 seconds when silence or unrecognized audio is included. Google says donated snippets are not kept longer than 18 months and that human reviewers may listen to or transcribe some clips.
Because this is voluntary, declining it is the clearest way to prevent this additional sample-sharing flow. Turning off audio donations does not disable ordinary talk-to-text; those are separate controls and data paths.

Advanced voice typing on Pixel phones
Google’s advanced voice typing help describes a limited feature that requires a Pixel 6 or newer. Google says dictated text normally stays on the device, except when you use “Fix it” or detailed edits. For detailed edits, both the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google servers for processing. Google says no audio is sent and that no text or audio is stored on its servers for that request.
Those assurances apply to this specified Pixel feature and operation. They should not be generalized to every Android phone, every voice mode, or ordinary talk-to-text.
Writing tools
Gboard writing tools can use typing history and a snapshot of the screen at the moment you invoke the tool to produce personalized suggestions, according to Google’s writing-tools documentation. Google says that when personal context is off, input text is still processed through Private AI Compute. This description of service architecture does not independently verify how the system operates. Avoid invoking writing tools in screens containing confidential material if that processing does not fit your requirements.

What permissions Gboard needs
A permission is an Android capability, not a complete description of what data is collected. Microphone permission enables voice input; the actual transfer depends on whether you activate talk-to-text, audio donation, or another voice feature. Android menus and permission choices vary by version, phone manufacturer, locale, and Gboard release, so there is no single universal permission inventory.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends granting microphone access only while using the app when that option is available. To review it:
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps (or App management on some phones).
- Select Gboard, then Permissions.
- Choose Microphone and select Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow, depending on your Android version.
With microphone access denied, the keyboard’s voice-input button will not function until you grant access again. Other permissions shown on your phone may reflect features or integrations not covered by Google’s general help page; evaluate each one in the context of the feature you intend to use.
How to change Gboard privacy controls
Google documents the main controls inside Gboard’s Privacy menu. Names can differ slightly by release or language.
- Open any app with a text field so the keyboard appears.
- Tap the gear icon, or open Android Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard.
- Tap Privacy.
- Review Personalise for you, Improve for everyone, and Audio donations.
- Turn off any option whose data sharing you do not want, then revisit this page after major Gboard updates because labels and feature scope can change.
Disabling “Personalise for you” is not a universal network kill switch. Search, standard talk-to-text, optional donations, advanced voice-typing edits, usage statistics, and writing tools have separate behavior.

How to delete learned words and Gboard data
To erase the personal dictionary that Gboard has learned from your typing, use one of these paths, depending on the installed version:
- Open Gboard Settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words.
- If your version exposes the control in Privacy, open Gboard Settings > Privacy and choose the option to delete learned words and data.
- Confirm the deletion. Words that Gboard learned from your use will need to be relearned later.
Deleting learned words is different from deleting Google Account activity, browser history, or recordings stored by another Google service. Those products have their own controls and retention rules.
What the Google Play “Data safety” label means
The Google Play listing for Gboard includes developer-provided Data safety information. It says no data is shared with third parties and lists categories the app may collect, encrypted transit, and data-deletion information. Google Play cautions that these practices can vary by use, region, and age, and that the developer can update the disclosure.
“No data shared with third parties” does not mean “no data is sent to Google.” Google provides Gboard, and its own help pages explicitly describe transfers to Google for searches, voice transcription, learning, and particular features. Read the Play label alongside the feature-specific Gboard documentation rather than treating either statement as complete verification.

Practical privacy configurations

Common misconceptions and fixes
“Gboard sends every keystroke to Google.”
That conflicts with Google’s stated disclosure that ordinary non-search typing, including passwords and chats, is not sent. The qualification is that separate features can process selected text, searches, voice, or screen context.

“Nothing I type or say ever leaves my phone.”
That is also too broad. Searches, standard talk-to-text, voluntary audio donations, detailed edits, federated learning, and writing tools have documented Google interactions.
“Turning off personalization stops all collection.”
Personalization controls affect learning features, not necessarily search, diagnostics, voice transcription, or every cloud-assisted tool. Review each feature independently.
“The Play label proves Google receives no data.”
The third-party-sharing label concerns sharing outside the developer context. It does not override Gboard Help pages that describe transfers to Google itself.
When should you keep Gboard?
Keep Gboard if its typing quality and accessibility features matter to you and you are comfortable with Google’s documented, feature-specific transfers. A balanced setup—ordinary typing, no audio donations, restricted microphone access, and selective use of search or writing tools—covers many users without abandoning the keyboard.
Choose a different keyboard when your threat model requires avoiding Google services entirely, when organizational policy forbids cloud transcription or text processing, or when you cannot accept the feature-specific transfers described above. Compare the replacement’s permissions and privacy documentation rather than assuming any keyboard is automatically safer.
Bottom line
Gboard is reasonably safe for ordinary typing under Google’s published practices, but it is not a zero-data or fully offline keyboard. Treat every optional function as a separate decision: searches go to Google, standard talk-to-text sends voice for transcription, audio donations share clips voluntarily, advanced voice-typing edits can send text and a command transcript, and writing tools may use typing history or screen context. Review Privacy settings, limit microphone access, delete learned words when needed, and avoid sensitive content in cloud-assisted features.
