Free Wi-Fi means you can connect without paying the venue; it does not tell you whether the network is genuine, private, or secure. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is now widespread, but you should still verify the hotspot, use secure websites, and keep your devices updated. At home, you control more of the setup, but internet service and networking equipment may still cost money.
What “free Wi-Fi” does—and doesn’t—mean
A cafe, hotel, airport, or library may let visitors use its hotspot without a direct charge. That describes the price of access, not the network’s security. A password prompt alone does not prove that a hotspot is authentic or that your activity is private.
Home Wi-Fi is different: you can configure your router, but connecting to the internet typically depends on a broadband service and equipment. The sources cited here do not establish the price of any specific hotspot, internet plan, router, or VPN, so costs depend on the provider and location.

The FTC’s current consumer guidance says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That is a general assessment, not a guarantee that every hotspot or website is trustworthy. FTC: Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know

HTTPS encrypts information between your browser or app and the website or service. It does not prove the destination is honest: a scam site can use HTTPS too. Keep your operating system, browser, and security software current; use strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication; and avoid suspicious links or sign-in pages.
Verify the hotspot before connecting
Ask venue staff for the exact Wi-Fi name and sign-in procedure. Attackers can create a lookalike network name, and a password by itself is not proof that you have joined the venue’s genuine network. CISA says a personal mobile hotspot is generally more secure than public wireless. For a sensitive transaction, consider cellular data or your own hotspot if you have a trusted alternative. Public hotspot vs. home Wi-Fi

How to secure home Wi-Fi
The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal as the newer and best available home Wi-Fi encryption, with WPA2 Personal as an option when WPA3 is unavailable. Its guidance also recommends unique credentials and current router software. FTC: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

- Use WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal if the router does not support WPA3.
- Replace the default Wi-Fi network password and router administrator password with strong, unique credentials.
- Install router software updates when available.
- Turn off remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) when you do not need them.
- Consider a separate guest network and enable the router firewall.
When an older router may need replacing
If an older router still offers only outdated WPA or WEP after software updates, the FTC advises considering a replacement. If you shop for a replacement, check that it supports WPA3 Personal and has an available software-update path. Buying a router alone does not configure it securely, and FTC guidance is not an endorsement of a particular model.

What a VPN can—and cannot—do
A VPN app can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN provider on an open Wi-Fi network, reducing what another person on the local network can see. In exchange, the provider handles your internet traffic and becomes another party you must trust. The FTC cautions that a VPN does not make you anonymous; some free VPN apps carry advertising or share information with third parties.
