Edge computing is not automatically greener than centralized cloud computing. It moves some processing closer to users or devices, which can reduce certain data transfers and support low-latency services—but it also adds physical computing equipment with electricity, cooling, materials and end-of-life impacts. Whether it lowers overall harm depends on the workload, local power and water conditions, network effects, hardware lifecycle and what it replaces.

Most published figures describe data centres, telecommunications networks or the ICT sector broadly, not edge infrastructure alone. They provide useful context, but they cannot establish an edge-specific footprint or a universal edge-versus-cloud winner.

What does edge infrastructure mean for sustainability?

Edge computing places some processing near the source or user of data rather than sending everything to a distant centralized facility. The term covers different systems, from small on-premises gateways to telecom edge sites. Their environmental effects vary with equipment scale, workload and operating conditions.

Edge can reduce some network traffic or avoid sending data elsewhere, but it can also add servers and supporting equipment instead of replacing central compute. Distance alone does not determine energy use or emissions: the relevant question is whether the deployment delivers the same useful service with lower total impacts across computing, networking, cooling and hardware lifecycle.

There is no established, comparable edge-only lifecycle dataset in the figures cited here. The broad data-centre and network statistics below should not be read as direct measurements of edge nodes.

What do the available energy and emissions figures show?

Official estimates indicate that digital infrastructure has a substantial footprint, while also showing why scope and dates matter. These figures describe broad categories rather than edge-only activity.

Measure Reported figure Scope and qualification
Electricity use in 2022 Data centres and data-transmission networks each accounted for 1–1.5% of global electricity use. Separate global categories, reported by the Publications Office of the European Union in 2024; neither is an edge-only estimate. Source
Growth from 2015 to 2022 Data-centre and network energy demand grew at a reported compound annual growth rate of 2–8%; data traffic grew 24% and data-centre workloads 33%. The EU publication attributes the slower energy growth to efficiency improvements in computation, storage and transmission. These trends do not show that total energy demand or absolute impacts fell. Source
Indirect data-centre emissions Around 180 Mt of CO₂ from electricity consumption. IEA estimate excluding backup generation; it represents all data-centre workloads, with AI as a subset, and equals 0.5% of global fuel-combustion emissions in the IEA’s framing. It is not specific to edge. Source
Future indirect emissions Almost 80% higher over the decade in the Base Case, reaching 1% of combustion emissions; 2.5 times higher in the Lift-Off Case, reaching 1.4%. IEA scenarios, not observed outcomes or forecasts specific to edge. Source
Global data-centre electricity use About 1.5%, or 415 TWh, annually; use could more than double toward 945 TWh by 2030. European Commission figures on data centres, not edge nodes alone. The projection is attributed to accelerated computing used mainly for AI. The Commission webpage was accessed in 2026, and estimates may change. Source

Efficiency can make each computation or transfer less energy-intensive even while demand grows. As the EU figures illustrate, traffic and workloads can expand faster than energy demand without implying that the absolute footprint is shrinking.

Does edge computing use less energy than cloud computing?

There is no universal answer. A useful comparison must hold the delivered service and workload constant, then account for the energy used by edge equipment, central facilities and networks. It should also establish whether edge processing actually displaces remote computing or simply adds capacity.

  • Energy and utilization: Compare electricity per useful workload and actual utilization, not equipment nameplate efficiency alone. Underused distributed servers can consume power without delivering enough useful work to justify it.
  • Carbon: Consider the emissions associated with the electricity supply where and when equipment runs. A renewable procurement claim is not the same as zero physical impact.
  • Water and location: Include the cooling method and local watershed context. A water-use figure without location and water-stress information can conceal important differences.
  • Network and workload boundary: Measure data transferred and the compute used at both ends. Include latency requirements and distinguish avoided transfers from transfers that continue alongside edge processing.
  • Lifecycle: Account for materials and manufacturing, service life, repair, reuse and end-of-life treatment.
  • Resilience and grid interaction: Identify whether flexible workloads can shift in time or location to support the power system.

These are comparison criteria, not a claim that either architecture wins on every measure. UNECE recommends context-sensitive lifecycle indicators and demand-side flexibility. The European Commission also says that flexible, well-designed data centres can adjust electricity use to grid conditions and aid renewable integration. What environmental impacts should a sustainability assessment include?

Electricity and carbon emissions

Record electricity use over a defined period and match it to the workload delivered. Estimate associated emissions using a stated geography, time period and method. Keep operational electricity emissions separate from embodied emissions from manufacturing equipment and infrastructure.

Cooling water and local conditions

Cooling can create substantial water demand, but the amount and significance depend on the system and location. The European Commission notes that data centres can have a substantial environmental and climate impact, mainly because of cooling-water needs and CO₂ emissions when their energy is not decarbonised. Materials, equipment life and e-waste

Servers and supporting equipment have impacts before they are switched on and after they are retired. Track expected service life, repairability, reuse and the end-of-life route, alongside the materials embodied in equipment. UNECE’s lifecycle guidance recommends indicators spanning carbon, water and material circularity. UNECE lifecycle recommendations

Can edge or AI workloads reduce emissions elsewhere?

They may enable services that reduce emissions in other activities, but a claimed benefit requires a counterfactual: what would have happened without the deployment? An assessment should identify the activity actually displaced, account for additional adoption and compute demand, and consider rebound effects that could erase expected savings.

The IEA cautions that AI’s net effect depends on how applications are rolled out, the incentives and business cases that emerge, and how regulation responds. That uncertainty applies to claims about downstream benefits: potential savings in another sector do not by themselves prove that the computing infrastructure has a lower net footprint. What can operators do to reduce avoidable impacts?

  1. Define the service and boundary. Specify the workload, geography, time period and service outcome. Count edge, central and network resources that contribute to delivering it.
  2. Measure useful output and actual utilization. Track electricity against completed workload, and identify equipment that is idle or underused.
  3. Check whether edge compute replaces or adds to remote capacity. Include any central systems that remain in operation and the network traffic that continues.
  4. Use location-aware energy and water data. Record electricity sources and cooling-water demand in local context rather than relying on undifferentiated totals.
  5. Include lifecycle and procurement criteria. Evaluate equipment longevity, repairability, reuse and end-of-life handling, in addition to operating efficiency. UNEP’s procurement guidance addresses data centres and servers as a practical intervention. UNEP sustainable procurement guidance
  6. Consider flexible operation where the service allows it. Shifting suitable workloads in time or location can help align demand with grid conditions, but latency, resilience and service requirements still apply.
  7. Report methods and uncertainty. Publish boundaries, data sources, assumptions and limitations so changes over time or between designs can be compared consistently.

What EU reporting rules apply, and what is still proposed?

The EU Energy Efficiency Directive created monitoring and reporting obligations for significant data centres, with indicators set out under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1364. The European Commission says its database publishes data relevant to energy performance and water footprint. These rules concern data centres and should not automatically be assumed to cover every small edge node. European Commission: Energy performance of data centres

On 21 September 2026, the Commission proposed a common rating scheme intended to improve energy and water transparency and began consultation on possible minimum performance standards. Its webpage said a legislative proposal was planned for the second quarter of 2027. The rating scheme and possible standards were therefore proposals or plans, not enacted requirements, as of that announcement. European Commission: Energy performance of data centres

Why are edge-specific sustainability comparisons difficult?

Measurement remains incomplete across the wider ICT sector. The International Telecommunication Union and World Bank reported in 2024 that data collection and analysis of ICT greenhouse-gas emissions and energy consumption are limited in many countries, leaving assessments heavily dependent on estimates. The ITU puts the challenge plainly: “In most countries, data collection and analysis of the ICT sector’s GHG emissions and energy consumption is limited.” ITU and World Bank: Measuring the Emissions and Energy Footprint of the ICT Sector

For a comparison to be meaningful, align its geography, year, system boundary and methodology. If those differ—or if edge-specific data are absent—broad industry figures can describe context but cannot settle whether a particular edge deployment is more sustainable.
