Duck.ai can be a good alternative if you want account-free access to several AI models through DuckDuckGo’s privacy-oriented routing. It is not a universal replacement for Gemini or ChatGPT: the better choice depends on the features and provider ecosystem you need, and the available evidence does not establish that one gives better answers overall.
What is Duck.ai?
Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo’s chat interface for third-party AI models. DuckDuckGo describes uses such as asking questions, composing email, and summarizing text. Its main distinction is the service layer around those models: DuckDuckGo says it anonymizes requests before forwarding them to providers. The underlying models and available features can change, so check the current model list before choosing a plan.
The listed free options include Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5, Mistral Small 4, OpenAI GPT-5.4 nano and mini, and gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B hosted by Tinfoil. Plus adds GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 4.6. Pro also adds Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol, offers greater reasoning effort, and has twice the Plus usage limits. The roster and tier details are subject to change.
Is Duck.ai private?
Duck.ai’s privacy approach is based on a relay and provider agreements, not on using a uniquely private model. DuckDuckGo’s help documentation says, “All chats are anonymized by DuckDuckGo.” It says it removes personal metadata, including IP addresses, before a request reaches a model provider. DuckDuckGo also says provider agreements require prompts and responses to be deleted after a response is generated, prohibit training models on Duck.ai conversations, and prohibit providers from using conversations for their own commercial purposes. These are DuckDuckGo’s stated policies, not the findings of an independent audit. DuckDuckGo’s privacy documentation explains the commitments and exceptions.

Text chats, history, and sync
“No storage” would be an inaccurate summary. DuckDuckGo’s Recent Chats feature stores conversations locally on your device. If you opt into syncing, chats are stored on DuckDuckGo servers in end-to-end encrypted form. Providers may also have limited exceptions: OpenAI and Anthropic may hold prompts in short-term memory for up to one hour for caching, while Anthropic may retain chats when required by law or to counter malicious use.
Files and shared chats
DuckDuckGo says uploaded files and images are scanned for child sexual abuse material. Files are not retained unless flagged; flagged files may be reported to authorities. Shared chats have different handling: an encrypted copy is stored on DuckDuckGo servers, and the decryption key is included in the share link. Anyone with that link can read the conversation. Links expire after 48 hours by default, with options to extend expiration or revoke a link. Don’t share a sensitive conversation through a link.

Voice is a separate case
Duck.ai voice chat streams audio to OpenAI through an encrypted relay. Dictation records audio locally first, then sends it for transcription. DuckDuckGo says recordings are not kept after the session or used for training, but cautions that a person’s voice is unique and can act as a biometric identifier. How does Duck.ai compare with ChatGPT and Gemini?
The useful comparison is about data handling, access, features, and ecosystem—not a blanket claim that one service is more private or produces better answers. Current Gemini privacy settings, account requirements, model lineup, and feature availability are not established here, so the table does not guess at them. Nor is there a sourced independent head-to-head benchmark establishing which service answers better.

For ChatGPT, privacy is not a simple on-or-off distinction: model-improvement settings and Temporary Chat provide controls, but the controls vary by account, plan, and workspace. Duck.ai’s approach is different because DuckDuckGo describes anonymizing the request and setting restrictions for model providers. Which arrangement suits you depends on what data path and controls you prefer.
What does Duck.ai offer that ChatGPT or Gemini doesn’t?
Its clearest differentiator is bringing multiple third-party models into one DuckDuckGo interface, alongside DuckDuckGo’s stated anonymizing relay. That can be useful if you want to try models from different providers without opening a separate chat product for each. The model choice is still bounded by Duck.ai’s current roster, tier, usage limits, and feature support.

DuckDuckGo’s updates list several additional capabilities, but features can depend on the chosen model and availability. Image generation, PDF uploads, image analysis, reasoning modes, voice-chat web search, and encrypted chat syncing are not guarantees that every model supports every capability. Check the live interface and updates page for the feature you need.
Can I use Duck.ai without an account?
Yes. Duck.ai offers account-free access. Recent Chats are stored locally on the device, while cross-device syncing is optional and end-to-end encrypted. Free use has daily limits, so frequent use or access to additional models may require a paid tier.

Who should choose Duck.ai?
Duck.ai is a sensible fit if
- You value DuckDuckGo’s stated anonymizing relay and provider-use restrictions.
- You want to try models from multiple providers in one interface.
- You prefer access without creating an account and can work within free-use limits.
A direct provider may fit better if
- You rely on a specific model, feature, integration, or wider product ecosystem that Duck.ai does not offer or that you have not verified is available there.
