Yes. Dropbox Basic is an ongoing free personal plan with 2 GB of starting storage. It includes syncing, security and file-sharing features, plus Dropbox Backup and online-only storage; however, Basic is limited to three connected devices. The main catch is capacity: exceeding the allowance can restrict account activity and may eventually lead to deletion of files you own after advance email notices.
What Dropbox Basic includes
Dropbox’s Basic plan is its free personal account, not a short-term promotion. Dropbox describes it as offering 2 GB of space along with syncing, security and file-sharing features. Its Basic plan information also lists Dropbox Backup and online-only storage. The exact behavior and availability of individual features can depend on their own settings and documentation.

For a personal account, the three-device limit is important: Dropbox’s account setup guidance says Basic users can connect a maximum of three devices. If you want the same account connected to several computers and phones, count them before relying on Basic.

How to get more free storage
Dropbox offers Basic users referral storage when an invited friend completes the qualifying steps. The published allowance is 500 MB for each qualifying referral, up to 16 GB earned through referrals. The invited person must accept the invitation, install the desktop or mobile app, log in through the app and verify their email address; simply sharing a folder does not qualify.
Referral terms are subject to change. Check Dropbox’s current referral requirements before inviting people.

What happens if your Dropbox is over its storage limit?
When a Basic account exceeds its storage limit, Dropbox says it may restrict syncing, uploading, sharing, moving or previewing files and folders. If the account remains over quota, Dropbox may delete files owned by the account holder to bring storage below the limit. Dropbox says it sends email notices in advance and begins with the owner’s least recently modified files.

Downloaded local copies remain available, but an online-only placeholder or a mobile file marked for offline use may not be saved as a complete file on the device. Download important files fully if you need a local copy; do not assume that seeing a file in Dropbox means it has been downloaded.

When an upgrade or trial makes sense
Upgrade for ongoing capacity
If 2 GB is not enough, Dropbox lists Plus as an upgrade from Basic with 2 TB of storage. That is a much larger allowance, but whether it is worthwhile depends on how much you store and whether you need the extra capacity. Dropbox’s cited storage guidance establishes the allowance, not a universal current price; check the terms shown for your account and region before purchasing.

Use a trial only if you want to test a paid plan temporarily
A free trial of a paid Dropbox plan is different from Basic: it lasts for a limited period and Dropbox’s signup instructions call for billing information. The instructions say you can cancel before the trial ends if you do not want to continue. Trial availability and checkout terms can vary, so review them at signup.

Dropbox Basic is the personal plan described above. Dropbox also documents a separate Business Basic team plan, which it says is not generally available, and other team plans such as Standard. Team-plan storage and features do not describe the allowance on an ordinary personal Basic account; Dropbox notes that team-plan details and availability can vary by purchase date and country.
