Choose Switch 2 if handheld play and a single package containing the main game and Dark Arisen matter more than image quality, loading times and occasional stutter.
The important qualification is platform evidence: the PS5 review was conducted on a PS5 Pro, and the Switch 2 comparison was also against PS5 Pro. There is no controlled current-build test here that proves how the Switch 2 version compares with a base PS5.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launched on October 9, 2026 for PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Capcom describes it as a paid expansion that adds a new story to the March 2024 game. On Switch 2, the main game and expansion are sold together in one package; on PS5, Dark Arisen is offered as an expansion for owners of the existing game. What Dark Arisen adds
A new region and story
The expansion introduces the Norgan region, a new storyline and progression designed for players who have already learned the base game’s combat and vocation systems. The PS5 Pro review praised Norgan’s story, boss encounters, loot progression and difficulty. Those additions give experienced players a reason to return rather than simply replaying the original campaign. The same review also notes that enemy variety remains limited, so the expansion does not remove one of the base game’s recurring weaknesses.
Twelve Lost Rites dungeons
PlayStation Blog announced 12 new Lost Rites dungeons, rare equipment and additional character-creation options: the June 25, 2026 announcement. These dungeons are scattered through the existing world rather than presented as one uninterrupted endgame zone.
The quality is uneven. Some Lost Rites areas are substantial crawls with meaningful combat and rewards; others are short sequences focused on fighting. Expect challenging encounters and useful loot, but not twelve equally elaborate dungeon adventures.
The free update is separate
Capcom also discussed a free update planned for late August that would add more save slots, increase weapon-skill slots from four to six and improve performance. Those announcements are separate from the paid expansion. The June post described the update prospectively, so do not assume every announced change is present on every retail build without checking the current patch notes.

How the PS5 version holds up
Why PS5 is the safer home-console choice
The cited Push Square review tested the European version on PS5 Pro. It praised the expansion’s Norgan story, progression, bosses and loot, making PS5 the better fit for players who want a traditional television experience and the clearest image among the versions discussed here. The review still identifies limited enemy variety and inconsistent Lost Rites dungeon quality, so a more powerful console does not change the expansion’s design limitations.
Do not turn that review into a blanket claim about base PS5 performance. A PS5 Pro review is useful evidence about the PlayStation edition’s content and presentation, but it is not a controlled comparison with a base PS5 running the current patch. If you own the standard PS5, expect the same game and expansion but treat exact frame-pacing or resolution assumptions as unverified here.
Who benefits most from PS5
- Players who mostly play on a television and value image quality over portability.
- People who already own the 2024 PS5 game and want to add the expansion rather than rebuy a bundle.
- Players sensitive to longer loads or visible image-quality compromises on a handheld-oriented port.
- Anyone with a PS5 Pro who wants the version reviewed directly in the available coverage.
How the Switch 2 version holds up
Portability is the decisive advantage
Switch 2 is the only option here that supports handheld play. Nintendo’s UK product page lists handheld and TV modes, one player on one system and a 49.6 GB download size: Nintendo’s product details. You can continue the same large-scale adventure away from a television, which is a major benefit for commuters, shared households and players who prefer portable sessions.
The compromises are visible
The Switch 2 launch review reports visual downgrades compared with PS5 Pro, longer loading in Pawn rifts and cutscenes, and occasional choppy frame rates. Stutter was more noticeable in docked play in that review. The reviewer also found Switch 2 smoother than the PS5 version at the original 2024 launch, but that is a historical comparison—not a controlled test against the current PS5 build released alongside Dark Arisen.

In practical terms, Switch 2 delivers the complete game in a portable form, but you should expect softer visuals, more obvious transitions and occasional unevenness. Those trade-offs are easier to accept if you spend most of your time handheld; they are harder to ignore if Switch 2 will remain docked beside a PS5.
Storage planning
The UK listing specifies a 49.6 GB download. Reserve at least that much free space before installing, and allow additional room for patches. The stated size is regional product information, so check your local listing for the exact download requirement.
Frame rate, variable mode and frame generation
Switch 2 does not run the game natively at 60 frames per second. Producer Naoto Oyama said the base target is 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes. The version includes optional frame generation that interpolates frames to create motion described as equivalent to 60 FPS. Nintendo Life reported the statement from Oyama’s Famitsu interview on September 19, 2026: the base frame rate is targeted at 30 FPS in both modes.

Interpolation is not the same as rendering every game frame at 60 FPS. It can make camera movement appear smoother, but it may also introduce artifacts. The launch review noticed slight ghosting and found the effect modest, generally preferring variable frame rate. Treat the setting as a visual option, not a performance transformation.

Because the launch reviewer preferred variable frame rate overall, that is the sensible first setting to try. If you notice uneven pacing, switch to locked 30 FPS. If you value apparent smoothness more than artifact-free images, test frame generation in both handheld and docked modes and disable it when ghosting distracts you.

Choose Switch 2 if portability changes when you play
Switch 2 is worth choosing when the ability to play handheld is not a minor convenience but the reason you will finish the game. Dragon’s Dogma 2 rewards long excursions, detours and repeated attempts at difficult fights. Portable access lets you make progress in shorter sessions without giving up the full Norgan story or Lost Rites content.
Accept three trade-offs before buying: the image is downgraded against PS5 Pro, loading is longer in some scenes, and frame pacing can become choppy. If those are deal-breakers, the bundle’s convenience will not compensate for the presentation you see every time you play.
Choose PS5 if consistency and presentation come first
PS5 is the better fit for a fixed home setup, especially when you already own the base game and can add Dark Arisen separately. The available review evidence gives PlayStation the stronger presentation, but remember that it comes from PS5 Pro hardware. A base-PS5 buyer should not assume the exact same performance characteristics without a test of that hardware and the current patch.

PS5 also avoids the Switch 2 edition’s portable compromises. If you play almost exclusively docked, compare the two versions as home-console products: Switch 2’s principal advantage then becomes its bundled edition, while PS5’s advantage is the reviewed home-console presentation.
Practical setup advice
Before installing on Switch 2
- Check the regional product listing for the current download size; the UK listing says 49.6 GB.
- Leave additional storage for updates rather than filling the card or internal storage to the listed minimum.
- Start with variable frame rate, then compare locked 30 FPS in the areas where you notice stutter.
- Test frame generation briefly. Keep it only if the smoother appearance outweighs visible ghosting.
- Use handheld mode for the situations where portability matters most; the review reports choppiness can be more noticeable while docked.
Before buying on PS5
- Confirm whether the product is the base game, the Dark Arisen expansion or a package containing both.
- If you own a base PS5, avoid relying on PS5 Pro footage as a precise performance guarantee.
- Install the latest available patch, since the 2026 release follows the original 2024 launch and announced performance work.
- Check that your save and edition match the content you intend to buy; the expansion is designed to add to the existing game on PS5.
Is the expansion itself worth it?
For players who finished or enjoyed the original game, the answer is generally yes. Norgan adds a new narrative thread, difficult bosses and a progression loop built around stronger loot. The 12 Lost Rites dungeons provide optional objectives throughout the world, and rare equipment gives repeat exploration a concrete purpose.
The value is lower for anyone who disliked the base game’s combat rhythm, enemy variety or uneven side content. Dark Arisen deepens those systems rather than replacing them. Shorter Lost Rites activities and familiar enemy limitations mean the expansion is an extension of Dragon’s Dogma 2, not a fundamentally different game.

Buy the PS5 version when you want the best-supported home-console presentation indicated by the available reviews, particularly on PS5 Pro, and when portability has little value. Buy the Switch 2 version when handheld play and an all-in-one package outweigh softer visuals, longer loads and occasional choppiness. Neither choice is a native-60-FPS experience on Switch 2, and neither platform comparison should be generalized from PS5 Pro to base PS5 without additional current-build testing.
For the right player, both versions are worthwhile: the same demanding action RPG, a substantial Norgan expansion and 12 Lost Rites dungeons, with the purchase decision determined primarily by where you play and how much performance compromise you will accept.
