Yes—Destiny 2 is worth trying for a new player who enjoys cooperative or competitive science-fiction shooters. The base game is free to start, and Bungie provides a dedicated New Light onboarding path. The important qualification is that Destiny 2 is a large, continually changing game: some campaigns, dungeons and other activities require paid expansions, keys or content packs. Start with the free tutorial and decide whether the shooting, progression and activity variety suit you before spending money.
Who will find Destiny 2 worth playing?
Destiny 2 is a good fit if you want a first-person shooter that combines missions, loot, character builds and repeatable multiplayer activities. You can play alone for much of the introductory path, then join cooperative strikes, raids and other activities when you are ready. Competitive modes are available for players who prefer fighting other Guardians.

The game is less suitable if you want a short, self-contained campaign with a fixed ending. Destiny 2 has an evolving structure, and its content is divided between a substantial free offering and optional purchases. You also need to learn several connected systems—equipment, abilities, vendors, quests and activity menus—rather than mastering one linear campaign and stopping.
That makes the sensible recommendation simple: install the free game, complete New Light and A Guardian Rises, visit the Tower, and sample several activities. Only then decide whether a paid expansion is worthwhile for you.

What the free game includes
Bungie describes Destiny 2 as free to play. Its current available-content guide lists New Light, a selection of weapons and activities, destinations, game systems, some campaign story content and other activities in the free offering. The exact selection can change as Bungie updates the game and reorganizes its content.
“Free to play” does not mean every campaign, destination, dungeon or seasonal-style activity is permanently included. Bungie’s same guide separates paid expansions, Dungeon Keys and content packs from the free offering. Treat the no-cost version as a substantial introduction and sample of Destiny 2, not as a guarantee that the entire catalogue is unlocked.
| Question | What a new player should expect |
|---|---|
| Can I begin without buying an expansion? | Yes. The New Light onboarding path and free activities let you create a Guardian and start playing before purchasing optional content. |
| Is every story campaign free? | No. Bungie lists some campaign story content in the free offering and lists other expansions separately. Check the current in-game or storefront description for each campaign. |
| Are all destinations and activities included? | No. The free selection includes destinations and activities, while additional destinations, dungeons and activity access may be tied to expansions, keys or packs. |
| Do I need a physical product? | No. The cited onboarding path is digital and in-game. You can install the game from a supported platform storefront and follow the tutorial. |
| Will the exact free list stay the same? | Not necessarily. Content packaging is changeable, so verify the live Bungie guide and your platform storefront before paying. |
Start with New Light: the exact first steps
Bungie’s new-player guidance points beginners toward the in-game tutorials. Its progression guide identifies the quest A Guardian Rises in the Cosmodrome as the first major step. Follow this sequence rather than immediately jumping into a random activity list.
Recommended Free Tools
- Create your Guardian. Choose a class and complete the character setup. The choice determines your initial ability style, but it does not lock you out of playing the rest of the game; you can create additional characters later if you want to experience other classes.
- Complete the New Light tutorials. Learn movement, aiming, abilities, equipment and basic objectives as the game introduces them. Bungie says the tutorial is skippable, but calls completing it a good idea for a first-time FPS or Destiny player.
- Begin A Guardian Rises in the Cosmodrome. This quest provides the intended first progression route and introduces the Cosmodrome area, combat encounters and early rewards.
- Read the objective text before leaving an activity. Destiny 2 often gives a reward, quest step or destination instruction at the end of an encounter. Claiming it and checking the next objective prevents early confusion about where to go.
- Replace equipment as you receive it. Early gear is there to teach the equipment screen and power progression. Do not spend scarce materials trying to build a perfect set during the tutorial.
- Finish the introductory path and travel to the Tower. The Tower is the central social space for vendors, quests and loadout support. It becomes the place you return to between activities.
Bungie’s older New and Returning Player Guide estimates the introductory mini-campaign at about two hours. That is Bungie’s approximate estimate from a guide published roughly 3.6 years before 2026-10-13, not a guaranteed completion time and not the time required to understand the whole game. Reading objectives, exploring or replaying encounters can take longer.
What to do when you reach the Tower
After the introductory missions, visit Ikora Rey. Bungie says Ikora offers initial builds after you reach the Tower. These builds are useful because they show how abilities and equipment work together without requiring you to understand every advanced system immediately.
Use Ikora’s builds as a learning tool
Try the available starting setups and notice how the selected abilities change your rhythm in combat. One setup may reward close-range aggression, while another may emphasize ability use or safer engagement distances. You do not need to choose a permanent identity at this stage. Equip a build, play a few activities, and change it when the style does not feel comfortable.
Organize your quests
New players can quickly accumulate objectives from the tutorial, vendors and activity prompts. Keep the quest you actively want to advance selected, and inspect the others before abandoning anything. If the game presents several destinations, follow the tracked objective rather than assuming the newest icon is mandatory.

- Online only and requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
- An incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.
Learn the Tower’s basic loop
- Return to the Tower after a mission to claim rewards and read new quest steps.
- Check your equipment screen before launching another activity.
- Look at the activity description to see whether it is a campaign mission, cooperative activity or competitive mode.
- Use the Tower as a pause point when your inventory or objectives become difficult to follow.
Choosing a story route
There is no single mandatory order for every campaign. Bungie suggests a mostly chronological route for players who want character and story development, while also stating that players can begin with the newest expansion and go back to earlier material. The best route depends on whether narrative continuity or immediate access to current activities matters more to you.
Choose the mostly chronological route if story context matters
A chronological approach lets you meet characters and understand changes in the setting in sequence. It is the better choice if you prefer to know why a faction, location or conflict matters before encountering later references. The trade-off is that you may spend more time with older content before reaching the newest expansion and its current activities.
Start with the newest expansion if you want current content
Beginning with the newest expansion can get you to the current campaign, abilities and activity ecosystem sooner. You may encounter references to earlier events without their full context, but you can return to earlier campaigns later. This route suits players whose priority is playing alongside friends who are already active in the latest release.
Use the Portal to sample activities
Bungie presents the Portal as another route for trying activities alongside campaigns. It is useful when you are not ready to commit to a long story sequence and want to learn what Destiny 2 actually feels like in play. Sample a mixture of mission types rather than judging the game from one tutorial encounter.
Free-first or expansion-first?
Most new players should choose the free-first approach. Buying immediately can make sense when you already know you want a particular campaign or when friends are waiting for you in paid activities, but it removes the easiest way to test the game’s shooting and progression loop at no cost.
| Decision factor | Try the free path first | Buy an expansion immediately |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | No purchase is required to begin; you can evaluate the game before checking current storefront prices. | You pay for optional content before knowing whether the core controls and systems suit you. Current prices were not established here and vary by platform, region and edition. |
| Campaign interest | Best when you want to learn the basics and sample the story content included in the free offering. | Best when a specific paid campaign is your main reason for playing and you have confirmed exactly what its edition includes. |
| Repeatable activities | Lets you test free activities, matchmaking and the general loot loop. | Opens the activities associated with the purchased expansion or key, subject to that product’s current access rules. |
| Friends and group play | Useful for finding out whether you enjoy playing together before anyone spends money. | Reasonable when your group has already chosen a paid activity and you have checked that every participant owns the required content. |
| Learning load | Introduces systems gradually through New Light and early quests. | Can put you into a larger set of quests, destinations and systems before you have learned the interface. |
Before any purchase, open the current product description on your platform and confirm the included campaign, Dungeon Key or content pack. Names and bundles can change, and an expansion purchase is not automatically a pass to every other piece of Destiny 2 content.
How much time should a beginner expect to invest?
The first mini-campaign can take about two hours according to Bungie’s older estimate, but that is only an introduction. Understanding equipment, abilities, destinations and activity types happens over many shorter sessions. You do not need to finish the entire free catalogue before deciding whether you like the game.

A practical first-session plan
- Play the New Light tutorial without skipping explanations.
- Advance A Guardian Rises until the game sends you to the Tower.
- Speak with Ikora and try one of the initial builds.
- Complete one additional activity that is not part of the tutorial.
- Stop and ask whether the shooting, movement and reward loop were enjoyable enough to continue.
This plan gives you a meaningful test without treating a two-hour estimate as a promise or requiring a purchase.

Build experimentation, collecting equipment, learning encounters and following multiple campaigns all add time. Cooperative endgame activities can also require coordination and preparation. If you want a game that rewards returning several times a week, this depth is a benefit. If you want a campaign that explains everything in one sitting, the same depth may feel like overhead.
Supported platforms and getting access
Bungie identifies Destiny 2 as available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store. Availability, editions and pricing can vary by platform and region, so use the storefront associated with the device you own.
Installation checklist
- Use the official listing for your platform and select the free Destiny 2 download or edition shown there.
- Allow time for the game and any required updates to install.
- Launch the game and follow the New Light onboarding rather than searching for paid content first.
- Read the storefront description before purchasing an expansion, key or pack; verify the platform, region and included items.
No physical disc, book or manual is needed for the starting path. Bungie’s online guides and the in-game tutorial provide the relevant beginner instructions.

“I do not know where to go next.”
Open the quest or objective screen, select the task you intend to complete and track it. Destiny 2 can display several activities at once, so the most prominent icon is not always the required next step. Returning to the Tower and speaking with the named vendor can also advance an early quest.

“The game feels overwhelming after the tutorial.”
Pause the campaign route and complete one activity at a time. Ignore optional vendors until you understand the basic loop of launching an activity, completing it, claiming rewards and checking the next objective. Ikora’s initial builds provide a manageable starting point while you learn.
“I expected every campaign to be free.”
Recheck the activity or campaign description. Bungie distinguishes the free offering from paid expansions, Dungeon Keys and content packs. The free game is intended to let you begin and sample Destiny 2; it does not promise universal access to every release.

“My friends are playing content I cannot launch.”
Ask which campaign, dungeon or pack the activity requires, then compare that requirement with your own access. A friend’s current activity may be tied to a paid expansion even though both of you installed the free game.
“I bought the wrong edition.”
Stop before buying a second product. Check the platform account’s purchase history and the edition description, then compare the included items with the activity you intended to play. Product packaging changes, so rely on the current storefront listing rather than an old video or guide.
“The controls are unfamiliar.”
Return to the New Light tutorial if you skipped it. Bungie specifically recommends completing the tutorial for a first FPS or Destiny player. Repeating the introductory lessons is more useful than trying to learn every advanced build immediately.
A decision checklist before you spend money
After completing the free introduction, answer these questions:
- Do you enjoy the core shooting, movement and ability mechanics?
- Did you like at least one activity outside the tutorial?
- Are you interested in a specific campaign, dungeon or other paid activity, rather than buying an unspecified bundle?
- Do your friends play content that requires the same expansion or key?
- Have you checked the current edition description and price in your platform’s region?
- Are you comfortable learning a game whose systems and content packaging change over time?
If most answers are yes, a targeted expansion purchase can be reasonable. If the shooting or progression already feels like work, additional content is unlikely to solve that problem. Continue with the free activities only if they remain enjoyable; there is no requirement to buy anything to validate your initial trial.
What changes over time
Destiny 2 is not a static product. The free and paid content lists, interface labels, platform availability and content packaging can change. Information that was accurate for an older expansion or storefront edition may not describe the current game. Before paying, consult Bungie’s live available-content and new-player guidance and the storefront listing for your platform.
The introductory duration is the clearest example of why dates matter: Bungie’s “about two hours” figure is an approximate estimate from an older guide, not a current measured average. Use it only to set expectations for the first mini-campaign, not to estimate the time needed to learn or complete Destiny 2.
Verdict
Destiny 2 is worth trying for new players who want a free-to-start science-fiction shooter with cooperative and competitive options, ongoing progression and room to develop detailed builds. The strongest route is to complete New Light and A Guardian Rises, visit the Tower, use Ikora’s initial builds and sample activities through the free offering. Buy an expansion only after you know which campaign or activity you want and have confirmed its current requirements. Players seeking a short, fully self-contained story may find the evolving, split-content structure less satisfying.
