Yes. You can sell games made with Defold. Defold’s official license grants worldwide, perpetual, no-charge and royalty-free rights to use the engine, including for commercial game releases. The important boundary is that you may commercialize your game, but you may not sell Defold itself as a game-engine product.
You still have compliance work: include the required Defold license and copyright notice, identify significant changes you made to Defold, and include notices for applicable third-party components. Storefront accounts, platform approvals, taxes, advertising networks and payment services remain separate from the engine license.
What “free for commercial games” means
Defold’s official materials describe the engine and editor as completely free of charge, with no Defold licensing fees or royalties. The engine’s full functionality is available without a paid commercial tier. That permission covers games you create and distribute commercially, whether you charge an upfront price, use advertising, offer in-app purchases or use another revenue model supported by your publishing platform.
The grant comes from the Defold License, version 1.0, dated May 2020. Its summary describes the rights as worldwide, perpetual, no-charge and royalty-free. In practical terms, the license does not impose a per-copy payment, revenue percentage or recurring engine subscription on your game. It also permits use of original or modified versions of Defold in creating software.

“Free” applies to Defold’s engine license, not to every service involved in releasing a game. A console manufacturer, app marketplace, advertising provider, payment processor or other service can impose its own account rules, review process, fees, revenue share, tax forms and technical requirements. Those contracts are independent of Defold.
The central licensing distinction: your game versus the engine
What you may commercialize
You may sell, license, distribute or otherwise monetize a game built with Defold. The game can contain your own code, artwork, audio, levels and other content, together with the Defold runtime components needed to execute it. The commercial permission is aimed at the finished software you create, not at a particular business model.
What the restriction targets
The license restricts commercializing Defold itself as a “Game Engine Product.” The license defines that term broadly as software used for video-game development, including content-authoring software and software used to show created content. The restriction is therefore directed at selling the licensed engine, editor or a derivative engine product as an engine business.

A game binary is the product you made; an editor or development package marketed as a game-development engine is the type of product covered by the restriction. If your business model involves redistributing a customized editor, engine service or development toolkit, read the complete license and obtain qualified legal advice before launch.

Include the Defold license and copyright notice

- A credits section that players can open from the title screen.
- A dedicated license or legal-notices screen.
- A startup log shown when the application launches.
- An accompanying text file in the distribution package.
- A printed manual for a physical release.
Choose a placement that survives the way you distribute the game. If the game is sold as a download, keep the notice in the downloadable package or in an in-game screen. For a physical edition, include it in the shipped documentation as well as any digital legal-notices screen that is part of the build.
Describe significant changes to Defold
If you modify Defold, the license requires a statement identifying significant changes. Keep a concise change record with the release materials. For example, a notice could explain that you changed a platform integration, rendering subsystem or editor component, then identify the version or build in which the change appears. Do not imply that the statement is a certification by Defold; it is your disclosure of your modifications.
Your game can use its own license, but not instead of Defold’s
You may apply your own end-user license terms to the game and your original content. Those terms do not replace the obligations attached to Defold. Separate the two clearly: your game EULA governs your content and customer relationship, while the Defold License governs the Defold components and the rights and notices associated with them.
Third-party components require a separate check
Defold includes third-party software, and some components can be included in games or applications built with the engine. The official compliance guidance places responsibility on the developer to provide the licenses and notices required by those components.
Do not assume that one Defold notice automatically covers every dependency. Review the components enabled by your project and the configuration used for each target. A mobile build, desktop build, HTML5 build and console build can include different libraries or integrations, so their notice sets may differ.

A practical notice-audit process
- Record the exact Defold version. Keep the engine/editor version and the build configuration used to produce the release.
- List enabled extensions and integrations. Include native extensions, platform SDK bindings, analytics, advertising, payment and other libraries that become part of the shipped application.
- Collect each applicable license and attribution. Preserve the copyright text, license terms and required attribution wording supplied with every component.
- Map notices to each target. Confirm which dependencies are present in Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5 and any console build you intend to distribute.
- Place the notices where users can access them. Combine Defold and third-party notices in a legal screen, credits area or accompanying file when that placement satisfies the component’s terms.
- Archive the evidence. Store the notice files, version information and build configuration with the release records so a later update can be audited.
When a component’s license has unusual redistribution, attribution or source-code conditions, follow that license specifically. A qualified lawyer can help with a release that redistributes a modified engine or a complex set of native dependencies.

Where Defold can publish games
The Defold FAQ lists targets across consoles, mobile devices, desktop operating systems and HTML5. That breadth means a single project can be adapted to several distribution channels, but each target still has its own technical and business process.
Desktop and downloadable releases
For a desktop release, you control the package, installer or download page, so include the legal notices in the application and distribution archive. You remain responsible for signing, packaging, updates, customer support and any payment or storefront agreement used to sell the game.
Mobile releases
Mobile builds must satisfy the selected platform’s application review, privacy disclosures, signing and content requirements. Defold’s engine license does not create a store account, submit an application for review or determine how a mobile platform handles payments and taxes.
Console releases
Console publishing generally requires access to the manufacturer’s developer program, approved hardware or software development kits, platform-specific testing and certification. Defold support for console targets does not waive those platform conditions. Confirm the current requirements directly with the console platform before committing to a release schedule.

HTML5 releases
An HTML5 build can be hosted on a site or delivered through a web distribution service. You still need to provide the required notices and comply with the host’s terms, privacy obligations, payment rules and content policies.
Monetization: what Defold provides and what it does not
The Defold FAQ describes support for in-app purchases and advertising solutions and directs developers to the Asset Portal for current monetization integrations. These are technical capabilities and integration options, not a promise that Defold will operate your merchant account or negotiate terms with a provider.
For each monetization method, separate the engine question from the service question:
- In-app purchases: the payment platform controls product registration, transaction processing, refunds, reporting and its commercial terms.
- Advertising: the ad network controls account approval, inventory, targeting rules, payout terms and policy compliance.
- Paid downloads: the store or payment service controls checkout, regional pricing, taxes, refunds and settlement.
- Web distribution: the host or payment provider controls hosting limits, checkout integration and any applicable service charges.
Defold’s royalty-free engine license means Defold does not take a royalty from these game revenues. It does not mean that the third-party service is free or that a platform will accept every monetization design.

- Confirm the product boundary. Make sure you are distributing a game or application, not selling a customized Defold editor or engine as a development product.
- Capture licensing records. Save the Defold License version used, your engine version and any modifications made to the engine.
- Write the significant-change statement. Describe material Defold changes in plain language and associate them with the relevant build.
- Assemble notices. Include the Defold license and copyright notice plus the applicable notices for third-party components in that build.
- Expose notices to users. Add a legal-notices or credits screen, startup log, accompanying file or printed manual appropriate to the release format.
- Audit each target separately. Recheck dependencies, permissions, signing, privacy disclosures and packaging for every platform build.
- Review service contracts. Read the current terms for the chosen store, payment provider, advertising network and hosting service. Account approval, fees, taxes and revenue settlement come from those providers.
- Keep an update trail. Repeat the notice and dependency review whenever you change the Defold version, enable an extension or add a platform integration.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“No royalties” means no release costs
Defold’s engine royalty is only one line in a publishing budget. Certification, developer accounts, payment processing, advertising, hosting, localization, customer support and taxes can all be separate costs. Build those into the plan without describing them as Defold fees.

One notice file covers every build
Different targets can package different third-party software. Maintain a target-specific notice list and regenerate it when project settings or extensions change.
Modifying the engine requires publishing all your game code
The Defold license summary allows modifications and does not require sharing those changes. That does not erase the separate licenses of third-party components or any obligations attached to code you obtained elsewhere.
A credits screen automatically satisfies every license
A credits screen is one placement Defold suggests, but individual third-party licenses can require particular wording, files or attribution methods. Check each applicable license instead of relying on a generic acknowledgment.
Engine support guarantees platform approval
Defold’s listed targets and integrations show technical support; they are not a certification or publishing agreement. Platform review, developer-program access and commercial terms remain controlled by the platform owner.
When to obtain legal advice
Most independent developers can handle a normal game release by following the Defold notice guidance and auditing their dependencies. Get qualified legal advice if you plan to sell a derivative engine, provide a hosted development service, redistribute a heavily modified editor, combine components with incompatible licensing terms, or face a trademark or contractual dispute. The official license text is the controlling document for those edge cases; this explanation is not a substitute for legal advice.
