Deadlock is not publicly available on Steam yet. Valve currently limits access to friend invites from people who are already playtesters. The store page shows a Free to Play tag, but also says the game is not yet available, so there is no confirmed public price or promise that the eventual release will be free.
Deadlock’s current access status
Deadlock is an early-development multiplayer game from Valve. As of October 13, 2026, its official Steam listing says access is limited to friend invites through existing playtesters and that the game is not yet available on Steam. You can read the current listing at Steam’s Deadlock page.

That combination matters. A store tag is not the same as a released product, and an unreleased playtest can change its access rules, content and monetization before launch.
What Free to Play means here
Valve’s Free to Play tag is the only pricing signal currently visible on the listing. It does not give you access, provide a download button, or establish whether the final game will have a free entry tier, optional purchases, a different model, or another arrangement. Because the same page says Deadlock is not yet available, treating the tag as a confirmed launch-price announcement would go beyond the published information.

There is also no official paid-access route. You do not need to buy a physical product, a code, a guide or special gaming equipment to request an invite. Paying someone who claims to sell access is especially risky because the official route is a friend invitation from an existing playtester, not a marketplace transaction.
How the official invite route works
The current Valve wording is concise: access is limited to friend invites via playtesters. In practical terms, an eligible person must already have Deadlock access and must choose to invite you through the mechanism available in their account. Valve’s public listing does not spell out the exact button labels, how many invitations a tester receives, whether invitations are reviewed, or how long delivery takes.
Step 1: Find a genuine playtester
Start with someone you know who can open Deadlock legitimately. Ask them to verify that the game is present in their Steam library and that their account currently has access. A person who only saw a video, joined a discussion, or received an unverified offer is not evidence that they can invite anyone.

Step 2: Ask whether the invite option is available
Because Valve has not published a complete current interface guide, your friend should use the in-game or account controls they actually see rather than follow screenshots from an old post. The friend-invite route can change while the test is running. If no invite control appears, that does not prove your account is ineligible; it may mean the tester has no invitations available or that Valve has changed the flow.
Step 3: Give the correct Steam contact details
Use the Steam account or friend connection your contact requests. Do not send a password, authentication code, recovery key or payment. An invitation should not require access to your account. If a person asks for credentials to “activate” Deadlock, stop and report the account.
Step 4: Accept only an official Steam notification or library change
Check Steam itself for the result. Do not rely on a screenshot, a direct-download link or an executable sent through chat. If access is granted, the game should appear through Steam’s normal account and library systems. The official listing does not promise a delivery timeframe, so silence is not a guaranteed rejection or an indication that a paid service can accelerate the process.

What an older community report says—and why it is not a current rule
A Steam Community post dated September 11, 2024 described a tester using an in-game invite friends option and said the recipient received a Steam notification. That is a user-generated historical account, not a current Valve support document. You can read it at the Steam Community discussion.

Valve may have altered any of those details since the post was written. The official listing remains the stronger source for the current high-level rule: an existing playtester must invite a friend.
Can you play without an invite?
Not through a legitimate public route described by Valve at the time of the latest listing. There is no documented open signup, public request-access queue, guaranteed application, or general download option. If you do not know a current playtester, the practical choice is to wait for Valve to change the access policy or to ask a trusted friend who already has access.

Be cautious with websites, social posts and private messages that promise instant entry. The official page does not list a paid access program, reseller scheme or guaranteed invite service. A request for money, a Steam password, a one-time login code, remote-control software or an external installer is inconsistent with the published access route. Use Steam’s reporting tools for suspected impersonation or fraud, and change your password immediately if you have disclosed credentials.

Valve describes Deadlock as still being in early development, with temporary art and experimental gameplay. That warning means the playtest is not a finished product and that mechanics, presentation, availability and technical behavior can change. An invitation therefore grants access to a test environment, not a promise of launch content, a permanent entitlement or a release date.

Players should expect unfinished elements and should avoid treating current screenshots, interface instructions or community procedures as permanent. If a friend’s instructions conflict with the current Steam page or with what the client displays, follow the current official interface and listing.

System requirements: what is and is not known
Deadlock’s Steam listing does not provide a complete minimum or recommended specification. It identifies a 64-bit processor and operating system, while other requirement fields remain not yet provided. There is therefore no defensible official minimum for CPU model, graphics card, memory, storage, DirectX version or network speed to quote yet.
Do not buy or upgrade hardware solely on the basis of unofficial requirement lists. A generic gaming PC, mouse, headset or other accessory is not established as necessary to obtain an invitation. Once Valve publishes a complete specification, use that information to check your system; until then, any detailed minimum claimed elsewhere should be treated as unverified.
Troubleshooting common invite problems
Your friend cannot find an invite control
- Ask the friend to confirm that they still have active Deadlock access, rather than assuming an old tester account remains eligible.
- Have them check the current in-game and Steam account menus for updated wording.
- Do not substitute a third-party code or installer; Valve has not documented those as alternatives.
You were told an invite was sent, but nothing appears
- Check the Steam client and the account connected to the friend’s invitation, not a different account.
- Ask the sender to verify the recipient identity before trying again.
- Allow for the fact that Valve publishes no guaranteed delivery time or confirmation procedure.
- If the sender asks for payment or credentials after the supposed invitation, treat it as suspicious.
A website claims it can unlock Deadlock
Close the page and do not sign in through an unfamiliar form. The official route is a friend invite from an existing playtester; the Steam listing provides no public paid unlock service. If you entered credentials on a suspicious site, secure the Steam account through official recovery and security settings.

- Open the official Deadlock Steam listing and read its current availability wording.
- Confirm that your contact is an active playtester, not merely a community member.
- Use only Steam account notifications, library entries and in-client controls.
- Keep expectations limited to an early-development test; access is not a release-date or monetization guarantee.
- Do not rely on unofficial system requirements while Valve’s fields remain not yet provided.
What would change the answer
The answer will change if Valve opens a public test, adds a request-access workflow, removes the invite restriction, publishes a release, or announces a final pricing model. Those changes should appear on the official Steam listing or another Valve-controlled announcement. Until then, the safest interpretation is narrow: Deadlock carries a Free to Play tag but is not publicly available, and access requires an invite from an existing playtester.
