Is CUDA only for NVIDIA? Yes: CUDA is NVIDIA’s parallel-computing platform and its standard GPU execution target is NVIDIA hardware. An AMD or Intel GPU does not natively run an ordinary CUDA application. Those GPUs can support other computing platforms, and migration tools can help developers adapt some CUDA code, but that is different from running CUDA directly.

What CUDA is—and what “only for NVIDIA” means

NVIDIA defines CUDA as a parallel-computing platform and programming model it developed. It combines software and hardware for GPU computing, with programming paths that include C++ and Python. CUDA is more than a graphics card or a single programming language, but its standard GPU platform is tied to NVIDIA GPUs. NVIDIA’s CUDA Programming Guide explains the platform and programming model.

That vendor connection matters when you install or choose software. If an application requires CUDA, it normally needs a compatible NVIDIA GPU, along with the appropriate driver and application dependencies. An AMD or Intel GPU may be usable only if the application has a separate supported version or its code is adapted to another platform.

Can you use CUDA on an AMD or Intel GPU?

Not as a native CUDA target. AMD and Intel provide separate GPU-computing paths; migration tools may help developers adapt code, but do not turn those GPUs into native CUDA devices.

AMD: ROCm and HIP

AMD’s ROCm is a distinct GPU-computing stack for supported AMD GPUs. AMD describes ROCm and CUDA as separate platforms. HIP can help port CUDA source, and HIPIFY can translate supported portions of code, but migration is not guaranteed to be automatic or complete. Code that calls CUDA APIs directly or depends on CUDA-specific libraries may need changes. Developers still need to check correctness and tune performance after porting. Some framework-enabled applications may offer ROCm support without requiring users to rewrite the application themselves.

Before relying on ROCm, check AMD’s ROCm documentation and current compatibility information for the exact GPU, operating system, ROCm release, and framework you plan to use.

Intel: oneAPI and SYCL

Intel’s oneAPI materials describe SYCL and DPC++ as tools for heterogeneous programming and include resources for migrating CUDA code. Intel’s GPU-flow documentation describes AMD and NVIDIA GPU targeting on Linux through the relevant Codeplay plugins. This is a separate toolchain and plugin-based route—not evidence that a CUDA runtime application runs directly on an Intel or AMD GPU. Confirm the supported operating system, plugin, and release for your intended setup in Intel’s GPU Flow guide and CUDA-to-SYCL migration materials.

Does every NVIDIA GPU run every CUDA application?

No. NVIDIA identifies GeForce, Quadro, Tesla, and NVIDIA GRID families as CUDA-enabled, but family-level support does not guarantee that every model, software version, library, or application will work together. NVIDIA assigns each GPU a compute-capability number that indicates its supported features and hardware parameters. Check the exact model against NVIDIA’s CUDA FAQ and GPU information, as well as the application’s own system requirements.

Compatibility also depends on what the application was built to run. NVIDIA documents conditions for compatibility across GPU generations: compiled cubin binaries are guaranteed to be compatible in certain cases within a major compute-capability version, but not across major versions. PTX can be compiled just in time for equal or later compute capabilities when the application includes suitable PTX. In practical terms, a compatible NVIDIA logo alone is not enough; the GPU target, driver, CUDA runtime or Toolkit components, and required libraries must also match. NVIDIA distinguishes the driver needed for GPU use from the CUDA Toolkit, which is a separate product. See NVIDIA’s CUDA platform documentation for these compatibility details.

How to choose a GPU-computing path

Start with the application or workload, not a general claim that one vendor’s stack is faster. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal performance winner or a workload-specific benchmark comparison.

What to check before buying or setting up a GPU

If you need to run CUDA locally, an NVIDIA GPU is the relevant hardware path. Verify the exact model against NVIDIA’s current GPU information, then check the application’s requirements for operating system, driver, compute capability, memory, Toolkit or runtime, and libraries. The listed NVIDIA product families establish broad CUDA support, not a recommendation for any particular current retail model.

If you already have an AMD GPU, first see whether your application supports ROCm. If you are developing software, assess the porting work and validate the result rather than assuming CUDA code will run unchanged. For an Intel GPU, check whether the software offers a suitable oneAPI/SYCL implementation or whether the documented plugin-based development path fits your environment.
