Yes, Counter-Strike is still a major force in gaming in 2026, but the active mainstream game is Counter-Strike 2, not Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). CS:GO has returned as a separate legacy option for community-server play, but it does not have official matchmaking. If you want the current Counter-Strike experience and its official matchmaking, choose CS2; choose CS:GO only if you specifically want the older game’s feel or community servers.
How relevant is Counter-Strike in 2026?
Counter-Strike remains one of Steam’s biggest games. Valve’s live Steam statistics ranked Counter-Strike 2 first among current Steam games on October 7, 2026, with 1,131,156 players at the captured moment and a daily peak of 1,276,600. That distinction matters: the franchise is highly relevant, but its current audience is centered on CS2. CS:GO’s continuing interest is narrower and tied to its legacy gameplay and community-server scene.
Can you still play CS:GO?
Yes, according to PC Gamer’s March 2026 reporting, CS:GO returned as a separate, unlisted Steam page. Players can join community servers through Steam’s server browser, but official matchmaking is unavailable. The separate launch option is not evidence that Valve is planning a broader revival. PC Gamer attributed Valve’s explanation to a representative, who described it as “just a quality of life improvement and easier way to launch it,” adding that players no longer had to switch depots in CS2 to access the legacy client. Because the listing is unlisted, finding or launching the legacy game may not be as straightforward as installing a currently listed Steam game. The reported route to online play is through community servers, not the old official matchmaking service.

Valve describes CS2 as a free upgrade to CS:GO. Its Steam page lists Premier mode, updated maps, dynamic smoke grenades and the Source 2 engine. Is CS:GO active, or is it dead?
“Dead” is too simple. CS:GO has a reported community-server audience and PC Gamer, citing SteamDB, recorded a post-re-release peak above 68,000 concurrent players. That figure demonstrates meaningful interest in the legacy game, but it does not make CS:GO equivalent to CS2: the figure is from a post-re-release series that only goes back to the 2026 split, and official matchmaking remains unavailable. What about competitive Counter-Strike?
The available figures establish CS2’s much larger current Steam presence, not the status of CS:GO-specific professional tournaments. Community-server activity should not be treated as evidence of an active professional CS:GO circuit. For a practical choice, use CS2 for the current official game and matchmaking; treat CS:GO as a legacy option for players who want its particular version and can find community servers that suit them.
