CompTIA A+ can be worth earning if you are targeting entry-level help-desk or computer user-support jobs and local employers value it. It is a structured way to demonstrate foundational IT knowledge, not a job guarantee or a proven route to a specific pay increase. Before committing, check the requirements in the jobs you want, assess what you can already demonstrate, and calculate the full cost of both exams and preparation.
What jobs does CompTIA A+ fit?
A+ is most relevant to first-line support work: diagnosing computer problems, helping users resolve them, setting up or repairing equipment, and installing or explaining hardware and software. These are among the duties the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes for computer user support specialists, including help-desk technicians. The BLS occupational overview is useful for understanding the work, but it does not establish that A+ is required for those jobs.
Entry requirements vary. The BLS says some candidates may qualify for support roles with a high school diploma and relevant IT certifications, while other roles may expect college coursework or a degree. Employers may also prioritize experience or a different credential. Treat A+ as one possible signal of foundational knowledge, not a universal hiring requirement.

What does the U.S. job outlook tell you—and what does it not?
BLS data can help put the career path in context, but it measures occupations rather than A+ holders. For U.S. computer support specialists, BLS reports these figures:

These are occupational statistics, not salaries for people with A+ or estimates of the credential’s effect on pay or hiring. They do not show that earning A+ causes someone to get a job. Wages also vary by location, experience, employer, and role.
When is A+ likely to be worth the effort?
Use the jobs you actually want as your decision test. A+ is a stronger candidate if it appears repeatedly in relevant local listings, you need a structured way to learn or show fundamentals, and the cost is manageable or covered by an employer, school, or workforce program.

- Check job-posting fit: Look at several entry-level support listings in your area. Note whether they ask for A+, another credential, a degree, or hands-on experience.
- Assess what you can already prove: If you have troubleshooting experience, consider whether you can demonstrate it through work examples, a portfolio, or interview explanations. A certification may add less value when you already have a strong, relevant record.
- Compare the full cost: Include both exam attempts, preparation materials, and the possibility of a retake. Confirm current pricing and retake terms directly with CompTIA before buying; the figures here do not establish current costs.
- Identify who will pay: Employer reimbursement or a funded training program can change the value calculation substantially.
- Match the credential to your next role: A+ is aimed at broad entry-level support foundations. If your target is network support or another IT specialty, check those jobs’ prerequisites rather than assuming A+ is the best next step.
A+ is a weaker bet if your target employers do not request it, you already have a more relevant way to demonstrate the required skills, or you would be paying for it based on an expectation of guaranteed employment or higher pay. Neither outcome is established by the available occupational statistics.

How to verify that your study materials match the exams
Check exam codes before purchasing a book or course. CompTIA’s available Core 2 objectives document is titled “CompTIA A+ Core 2 (220-1202) Certification Exam: Exam Objectives, Version 2.0” and carries a 2024 copyright. It is an authoritative outline for that Core 2 exam, but it is not a complete outline for both exams and does not establish current exam availability, pricing, or other exam policies.

The best evidence for your decision is the hiring language in your own target market—not an occupational wage figure treated as an A+ premium.
