Compressing files is usually safe when you use a lossless method and the goal is to save space or bundle files. Lossless compression can reconstruct the original data; lossy compression deliberately discards information. Before compressing, consider whether the file is already compressed, whether exact fidelity matters, whether encryption will remain in place after extraction, and whether the archive is trustworthy.

Does compressing files reduce quality?

Not necessarily. The result depends on the compression method:

  • Lossless compression preserves enough information to reconstruct the original data. RFC 1952 defines GZIP as a lossless compressed data format and includes a checksum for detecting data corruption. RFC 1952
  • Lossy compression reduces size by discarding some source information. That may be acceptable for some uses, but it is a poor choice when you need to preserve exact visual detail.

For a scan, evidence file, working master, or record that must retain its detail, keep an unchanged original and use lossless compression unless the applicable policy explicitly permits a lossy copy. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends lossless compression when fidelity to a document’s exact appearance matters. NARA digital-imaging technical report

Does zipping files make them smaller?

Sometimes. ZIP can combine multiple files and folders into one archive, which can make sharing and transferring them more convenient even if the archive is not much smaller. Microsoft notes that JPEG collections may remain about the same size after zipping. Microsoft: Zip and unzip files

Already-compressed formats often have little redundant data for a second compression pass. Google Cloud warns that gzip applied to many compressed image, video, and audio files offers virtually no benefit and can make the object larger because of added overhead. That guidance concerns cloud-served gzip, so treat it as a reason not to assume another compression layer helps—not as a guarantee about every app or file. Google Cloud: Transcoding of gzip-compressed files

There is no dependable, universal percentage of space saved: results depend on the file contents and method. If the final size matters, compare the actual archive size with the originals.

Can compression affect encryption?

It can, depending on the workflow. Microsoft warns that files encrypted in Windows may be unencrypted after they are added to a zipped folder and extracted, potentially exposing sensitive data. Do not assume that encryption survives archiving: check what your operating system and archive application do, then verify the extracted file’s protection before storing or sharing it. Are ZIP, GZIP, and TAR the same thing?

No. ZIP bundles files and can compress entries within the archive. GZIP is a compression format. TAR creates a filesystem-oriented archive and is commonly paired with a separate compression layer in developer workflows. Their structure and behavior are not interchangeable; choose based on the software and workflow that need to create or open the files. Microsoft’s .NET guidance also notes that TAR can carry richer filesystem metadata than ZIP. Microsoft Learn: Best practices for working with ZIP and TAR archives in .NET

What should you check before extracting an archive?

Archives from outside sources can pose security risks separate from whether compression preserves file quality. Microsoft’s .NET guidance identifies path traversal and zip bombs as risks in untrusted archives. A zip bomb can consume excessive resources when expanded; path traversal can attempt to write files outside the intended extraction location.

  • Be cautious with unexpected archives, especially from unknown senders.
  • Use trusted, updated extraction software.
  • If you build software that extracts external archives, validate destination paths, entry sizes, and resource use rather than assuming extraction is harmless.

These implementation concerns are described in Microsoft’s .NET guidance and are especially relevant to developers handling untrusted ZIP or TAR files. Microsoft Learn: Best practices for working with ZIP and TAR archives in .NET

How do you create or extract a ZIP file in Windows?

Microsoft’s Windows instructions use File Explorer. Menu labels and supported archive formats can vary by Windows version; the cited page references Windows 11, version 24H2, for some format and encrypted-archive operations. Microsoft: Zip and unzip files

  1. To create an archive, select the files or folders in File Explorer, open the context menu, and choose the option to create a compressed (zipped) folder.
  2. To extract an archive, use Extract All in File Explorer, or drag its contents to the destination you want.
  3. If the files are encrypted or sensitive, check their protection after extraction before sharing or storing them.

What matters for long-term preservation?

For permanent or fidelity-sensitive records, follow the relevant organization’s or archive’s format policy rather than treating all compression choices as equivalent. NARA’s file-format tables specify requirements for particular federal digitized-record contexts; those rules do not automatically apply to personal files or every archive. Long-term access also depends on whether future software can decode a format. NARA’s technical report cautions that proprietary compression may create compatibility problems if supporting software becomes obsolete, and recommends keeping a decompression utility when such a method is unavoidable. This is a preservation consideration, not a prediction that proprietary formats will inevitably fail. NARA digital-imaging technical report
