No. Comcast’s Xfinity home WiFi is not cellular 5G. The confusion is usually between 5G, a generation of mobile-network technology, and 5 GHz, a radio band that a WiFi gateway may use. They describe different parts of a wireless connection.
What “5G” and “5 GHz WiFi” mean
| Term | Meaning | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| 5G | A generation of wireless technology for mobile networks, as Xfinity describes it in its 5G explainer. | Between a cellular device and a mobile network. |
| 5 GHz WiFi | A radio frequency band used by a WiFi network. | Between devices and a nearby WiFi gateway or router. |
The “G” in 5G refers to a mobile-network generation; “GHz” in 5 GHz is a frequency unit. Xfinity says gateway models may broadcast WiFi on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and, on some models, 6 GHz. Available band settings depend on the gateway and configuration; the Xfinity app may offer band-specific controls, while some advanced settings are managed automatically or hidden. See Xfinity’s advanced WiFi settings guide.

How Xfinity home WiFi, mobile 5G, and hotspots differ
Home WiFi
Xfinity home internet reaches the home through its internet service and gateway. The gateway then provides a local WiFi connection for devices nearby. A 5 GHz WiFi signal is part of that local wireless network; it does not turn the home internet connection into cellular 5G.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteXfinity Mobile 5G
Xfinity Mobile uses cellular 5G where available. Xfinity says access requires a 5G-capable device and its latest data plan. Its coverage information distinguishes low-band, mid-band C-Band, and high-band Ultra Wideband: the company describes low-band as broadly available, mid-band as generally covering a neighborhood or town, and high-band as typically limited to smaller areas. C-Band and Ultra Wideband are available only in some areas, so check coverage for your ZIP code on Xfinity’s coverage page. These are Xfinity’s descriptions, not a guarantee of service or speed at a particular address.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Xfinity Home Hotspot
Some Xfinity gateways also broadcast separate hotspot networks, such as “xfinitywifi,” “XFINITY,” or “Xfinity Mobile.” Xfinity says these signals are separate from the household’s secure private WiFi network. They are gateway features, not cellular 5G. The company also says retail routers do not support its Xfinity WiFi service; adding a third-party router does not create an Xfinity hotspot. See the Xfinity Home Hotspot FAQ.
What WiFi PowerBoost does—and doesn’t mean
Xfinity describes WiFi PowerBoost as a feature for eligible Xfinity Mobile customers who also have Xfinity Internet. The company says gig-speed WiFi with PowerBoost is available through Xfinity hotspots and XB7 or XB8 gateways to Xfinity Mobile customers only; actual WiFi speeds vary and are not guaranteed. It is a conditional WiFi feature, not a redefinition of home WiFi as cellular 5G. Details are in Xfinity’s WiFi PowerBoost feature information.

What this means if you are setting up Xfinity internet
To activate Xfinity home internet, Xfinity’s guide lists an Xfinity WiFi Gateway, coax cable, power outlet, a phone, tablet, or computer, and Xfinity credentials. The published setup steps connect the gateway to the wall with coax, power it on, and activate service in the Xfinity app. This sets up home internet and WiFi; it does not establish cellular 5G coverage. Follow Xfinity’s gateway activation instructions for the current process.
