Coastline Bank’s Standard Home Buildings and Contents cover is insurance arranged through CGU, with Insurance Australia Limited identified as the issuer under the CGU brand. Coastline’s online summary outlines the product, but the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), your quote and your Certificate of Insurance are the documents to rely on for exact coverage, limits, exclusions and excesses. No premium comparison or individual quote is available here, so this review does not establish whether the policy is suitable or competitively priced for you.

Who provides the cover, and what should you check?

Coastline Bank distributes the insurance through its CGU insurance partner and identifies Insurance Australia Limited as the issuer under the CGU brand. The bank’s product page is a high-level overview, not a replacement for the policy documents. Before deciding, read the current PDS and Target Market Determination (TMD), and check the quote and Certificate of Insurance for the cover and excesses that apply to your property.

Coastline says its website information is general advice and asks customers to consider their circumstances and the PDS/TMD. The exact current PDS version, premium and excess values were not established here; confirm them for your quote rather than assuming a summary-page limit applies to your policy.

What does the Standard cover, according to Coastline’s summary?

The combined policy is described as covering the home and belongings for a range of incidents. Coastline says CGU pays to repair or rebuild a damaged home up to the insured amount for covered events. The public summary names:

  • Fire, including bushfire
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Flood and rainwater runoff
  • Storm, storm surge and tsunami

These are listed events, not a guarantee that every loss associated with them will be covered. Exclusions, conditions, limits and the policyholder’s selected cover apply. Coastline specifically says actions of the sea, such as tides and waves, are not covered. Read the PDS definitions and exclusions closely, particularly for water-related damage.

Other benefits and optional cover listed online

Coastline’s overview also lists legal liability cover up to $20 million and visitors’ belongings cover up to $2,500. It describes accidental damage, valuable contents, motor burnout and portable contents as optional cover. These are summary-page figures and descriptions; check the PDS and Certificate of Insurance to confirm what is available and selected for your policy.

  • Motor burnout: Coastline says the cover applies to motors up to 15 years old if they are not under warranty or used in a business.
  • Portable contents: The summary says cover is up to $10,000 per item unless an item is separately listed for a higher amount. Geographic and activity exclusions apply.

How does Standard differ from Plus?

The clearest published differences on Coastline’s product page are Plus’s building safety net and longer temporary accommodation period. Plus also has higher limits on some inclusions, including food spoilage and landscaping, but the exact limits and conditions need checking in the current PDS.

Feature Standard Plus
Temporary accommodation Up to 12 months, according to Coastline’s product page (copyright 2025). Up to two years, according to Coastline’s product page (copyright 2025).
Building safety net No 25% safety net is listed for Standard in Coastline’s summary. 25% above the building sum insured, according to Coastline’s product page (copyright 2025).
Some inclusion limits Specific Standard limits are not stated in the summary for the examples compared here. Higher limits on some inclusions, such as food spoilage and landscaping; exact amounts are not stated in the summary.

Do not assume Plus-specific terms apply to Standard. The PDS and Certificate of Insurance determine how benefits operate, including any sublimits, eligibility rules and conditions.

How much contents insurance do you need?

Estimate what it would cost to replace your belongings, rather than relying on their second-hand value or an arbitrary round number. Coastline’s Home Contents Key Facts Sheet recommends listing possessions and estimating replacement costs. It is marked revision 08/17, so use this as a practical valuation approach—not as evidence of current detailed policy terms.

  1. Make an inventory room by room, including items in storage and belongings you may overlook, such as clothing, kitchenware and linens.
  2. Estimate the current cost to replace each item with a comparable new one. Keep receipts, photos or other records where useful.
  3. Add the estimates and compare the total with the contents sum insured shown in your quote or Certificate of Insurance.
  4. Review the inventory when you acquire valuable items or replace household goods, and check whether an item needs to be separately specified or covered by an optional benefit.

Underinsuring contents can leave you short of the amount needed to replace them. The older key facts sheet states: “A failure to adequately insure you contents for their replacement value may result in underinsurance.” Because that sheet is dated, confirm current policy requirements and limits in the PDS. A spreadsheet or written inventory can help organize the estimate; neither determines the insurer’s final coverage terms.

What policy details remain to verify?

The online overview is not enough to settle the details that determine how a claim would be assessed. Before buying, check the current documents for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Building and contents sums insured, and how the Plus safety net operates if considering that tier
  • Event definitions, exclusions and any waiting periods, especially for water and earth movement
  • Temporary accommodation limits, duration and qualifying conditions
  • Limits and conditions for portable contents, specified valuables, accidental damage and motor burnout
  • Excesses shown on your Certificate of Insurance
  • Any cooling-off period and its conditions

Coastline’s Home Contents Key Facts Sheet, revision 08/17, stated a 21-day cooling-off period subject to conditions: the policy had to be issued and no claim made. That is a dated statement, not confirmation of the current period. Verify the timing and conditions in your current policy documents before relying on it.

How to compare it with another home policy

Compare policies using the same property details, sums insured, excess settings and optional cover choices. A lower headline premium may reflect a different excess or fewer benefits, so compare the actual quote and policy documents across the same decision points:

  • Building and contents sums insured, including any safety net
  • Covered events, event-specific waiting periods and water or earth-movement exclusions
  • Temporary accommodation duration and limits
  • Portable contents geography and item limits, and requirements for specifying valuables
  • Availability and terms for accidental damage and motor burnout
  • Legal liability limits and applicable excesses
  • Total price for matching address, cover choices and excess settings

CHOICE’s available comparison relates to Plus, not Standard, so it should not be treated as evidence of Standard’s terms. No quote or premium comparison was obtained for this review.
