No—China Construction Bank Corporation (CCB) does not identify a direct European listing for its ordinary shares in the official investor materials reviewed for this guide. CCB’s ordinary shares are listed on two Asian exchanges: the Shanghai Stock Exchange (A-share code 601939) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (H-share code 00939, commonly displayed as 939 without the leading zero). A London-traded fund may own CCB shares, but that is indirect exposure through a fund, not a London listing of CCB itself.

This answer is limited to CCB’s reviewed official disclosures, including its 2025 half-year report and investor information. Those documents identify Shanghai and Hong Kong as the company’s ordinary-share venues; they do not establish that every European exchange has been exhaustively checked.

What “listed in Europe” means in this case

A company is directly listed in Europe when its own shares are admitted to trading on a European exchange under an exchange-recognized instrument. The company’s name, share class and ticker refer to that European venue. A European exchange can also offer a fund, depositary instrument or other security that owns or references shares traded elsewhere. That product gives investors market access, but it does not create a second ordinary-share listing for the underlying company.

That distinction matters for CCB. The bank’s ordinary shares are identified in its own materials as Shanghai A-shares and Hong Kong H-shares. A London-listed fund can include CCB ordinary shares among its holdings, yet the fund’s London quotation remains the fund’s listing. Searching for “CCB” in a European platform may therefore return an indirect product even when CCB’s own ordinary shares are not listed there.

“Listed in Europe” can also be confused with “available to a European investor.” Availability concerns a broker’s market connections, account permissions and local rules. Listing concerns the exchange on which the issuer’s security is admitted. A person in Europe might obtain exposure through a fund, or in some cases access an overseas exchange through a broker, without CCB having a European ordinary-share quotation.

CCB’s two ordinary-share listings

CCB reports two ordinary share lines. They represent the same company but trade on different exchanges under venue-specific codes. The official report uses a five-digit Hong Kong code with a leading zero, while other CCB investor information presents the Hong Kong ticker without that zero.

Share line Exchange Code in CCB’s current report Short form used in CCB investor information
A-share Shanghai Stock Exchange 601939 601939
H-share Hong Kong Stock Exchange 00939 939

The table identifies the exchange and code only. The reviewed material does not provide a complete side-by-side assessment of currency, liquidity, taxes, settlement, trading hours, investor eligibility or broker availability. Those conditions can differ by market and by the investor’s country, so the two codes should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.

For a search, the safest combination is the full legal name, the exchange and the code. “China Construction Bank Corporation—Shanghai—601939” points to a different market line from “China Construction Bank Corporation—Hong Kong—00939.” The abbreviation “CCB” alone is not a sufficient identifier because platforms can use abbreviations for funds, derivatives or unrelated companies.

Is there a direct European ticker?

Based on the reviewed CCB disclosures, there is no CCB ordinary-share ticker identified for a European exchange. The company’s investor overview summarizes its share venues as Hong Kong, with the H-share listed in October 2005 under code 939, and Shanghai, with the A-share listed in September 2007 under code 601939. Its 2025 half-year report likewise identifies Shanghai code 601939 and Hong Kong code 00939.

Consequently, a search for a direct European CCB ordinary share should not be expected to produce a separate Frankfurt, London, Paris, Amsterdam or other European exchange line from the evidence reviewed here. This is a bounded conclusion about the issuer’s disclosed ordinary-share listings, not a claim that every European venue or every possible structured product has been independently audited.

If a website labels an instrument “CCB Europe,” inspect the legal issuer and instrument description. The label may refer to a fund, a certificate, a derivative, a data symbol or a marketing name rather than an ordinary share issued by China Construction Bank Corporation. The exchange’s security page and the issuer’s own investor disclosures are more reliable than a shortened search label.

Listing timeline

Hong Kong H-shares

CCB states that its H-shares were listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 27 October 2005. CCB investor information commonly shows the ticker as 939, while the current report records it as 00939.

Shanghai A-shares

CCB states that its A-shares were listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on 25 September 2007. The A-share code is 601939 in both the current report and the investor overview.

These dates describe the original listing events. They are not statements about a current price, valuation, trading volume or whether a particular broker still accepts orders from a particular jurisdiction. A historical listing date also does not mean that the two lines have identical trading records or identical access conditions today.

Rank #2

Why the 00939 and 939 versions both appear

Hong Kong stock identifiers are often displayed with a fixed five-digit format. Under that convention, CCB’s H-share code is 00939. Some websites, data feeds and brokerage interfaces suppress leading zeros and show 939 instead. Both forms refer to the Hong Kong share line in the CCB materials reviewed for this article.

The Shanghai identifier does not have this ambiguity: use 601939 for the A-share. If a platform returns multiple securities for “China Construction Bank,” inspect the exchange and security description rather than selecting the first numerical match.

Entering 939 into a field that expects five digits can produce no result, while entering 00939 into a system that removes leading zeros can still return the correct security. Try both forms, then verify the exchange. A matching number without a matching venue is not enough.

Direct shares versus a London-traded fund

A London Stock Exchange fund page reviewed for this subject lists China Construction Bank Corporation ordinary shares among the fund’s holdings. That evidence supports a narrow but important point: investors can encounter CCB exposure inside a London-traded fund. It does not show CCB’s own ordinary shares trading on the London Stock Exchange.

What appears in a European market What the investor owns or trades Does it prove a direct CCB listing?
CCB ordinary share under a Shanghai or Hong Kong code An ordinary CCB share traded on its named Asian exchange, subject to access arrangements No European listing is shown; the venue is Shanghai or Hong Kong
A London-traded fund reporting CCB among its holdings Units of the fund; CCB is one underlying holding No. The London listing belongs to the fund
Another derivative, receipt or structured product A separate instrument whose terms determine exposure, costs and risks No, unless the issuer and exchange explicitly identify it as a CCB-listed ordinary share

A fund’s price, dealing schedule, fees, distributions and portfolio can differ materially from the underlying CCB share. Calling such a fund “the European CCB stock” would blur the legal issuer, the traded instrument and the risks involved.

Fund exposure can also change. A holdings page is a snapshot of the fund’s portfolio, not proof that the fund will always hold the same number of CCB shares. Read the fund’s current factsheet, prospectus and exchange description for its objectives, costs and dealing terms. Those documents describe the fund, not a new CCB share class.

How to search for the correct CCB security

If you are checking a broker or market-data service, search by both the company name and the venue-specific code. Interfaces vary, so use the exchange field and security type as a second check.

  1. Search the full company name. Enter “China Construction Bank Corporation,” not only “CCB,” because abbreviations can return unrelated securities.
  2. Check the Shanghai result. The A-share should show exchange or market information for Shanghai and code 601939.
  3. Check the Hong Kong result. The H-share may appear as 00939 or 939, with Hong Kong identified as the exchange.
  4. Read the instrument type. Confirm that the result is an ordinary share rather than a fund, depositary instrument, certificate, warrant or derivative.
  5. Verify the issuer and exchange in the security details. A familiar-looking ticker is not enough if the legal issuer, currency or venue differs.
  6. Review your account’s dealing permissions. A security can be visible in a search tool but unavailable for order entry because of jurisdiction, account classification or market-access rules.
  7. Check whether the quote is live or delayed. A displayed price can be reference data rather than an executable quote, and the platform should state its timing.
  8. Save the exact instrument record. Record the exchange, code, legal name and security type before placing any order so that a similarly named product is not selected accidentally.

Do not infer availability from a search result. Your broker may display prices or reference data for a market that it does not permit you to trade.

Can an investor in Europe buy the shares?

Possibly, but the answer depends on the investor’s country, broker, account type and the broker’s access to Hong Kong and/or Shanghai markets. The listing facts alone do not establish that a resident of any particular European country can place an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before attempting a trade, check the broker’s current documentation for:

  • whether Hong Kong or Shanghai dealing is supported;
  • whether the account is eligible for the relevant market and share class;
  • which trading currency and foreign-exchange process apply;
  • commission, custody, exchange, settlement and currency-conversion charges;
  • market hours, order types and settlement arrangements;
  • tax reporting, withholding and capital-gains treatment in your country; and
  • any product-governance or disclosure restrictions applying to your account.

These are operational and regulatory questions for the broker and the investor’s local advisers. They cannot be answered by the ticker alone, and the reviewed CCB materials do not verify access for any named European jurisdiction.

Costs deserve particular attention because a low share price or familiar ticker does not reveal the total expense of dealing overseas. Possible charges include a trading commission, a local exchange or levy charge, custody or account fees, foreign-exchange spread, settlement costs and taxes. The applicable amounts and treatment depend on the broker, market and investor’s country; no universal figure can be inferred from CCB’s listing codes.

What differs between the A-share and H-share?

The A-share and H-share are separate exchange lines, even though both relate to CCB. Their codes, listing venues and market infrastructure differ. An investor should not assume that an order entered for 601939 will be routed to Hong Kong, or that 00939 is simply a second symbol for the Shanghai line.

The materials reviewed here do not provide a complete comparison of trading currency, liquidity, settlement cycle, market hours, taxes, quotation conventions or eligibility. Those details must be obtained from the relevant exchange and broker. This limitation is important for European readers: a broker may support one market but not the other, or may impose different permissions and charges for each.

Price differences between two venues, if observed, do not by themselves prove that one code is wrong. Different currencies, trading hours, liquidity and market conditions can affect quotations. Use the exchange and legal instrument description to identify the security before attempting to interpret a price.

Common mistakes when looking up CCB

Mistake 1: Treating a European fund as a European CCB listing

A fund quoted in London or elsewhere in Europe is a separate security. Its holdings can change, and its price can diverge from the value of CCB shares because of fees, cash, other investments and market effects.

Mistake 2: Using 939 on the wrong exchange

939 is the shortened presentation of CCB’s Hong Kong code. It is not the Shanghai identifier. For Shanghai, use 601939.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake 3: Assuming the two share lines are identical for trading purposes

The A-share and H-share are different exchange lines. The reviewed sources do not establish that they have identical prices, currency, liquidity, settlement or eligibility conditions.

Mistake 4: Assuming visibility means tradability

Market-data pages can show instruments that a broker will not accept for your account. Confirm dealing permissions and current market access separately.

Mistake 5: Treating a listing answer as an investment recommendation

The official disclosures establish where the ordinary shares are listed and which codes identify them. They do not establish suitability, fair value, expected return or whether either share line is appropriate for an individual investor.

Mistake 6: Confusing a historical date with current access

The 2005 Hong Kong and 2007 Shanghai dates identify when CCB says each line was listed. They do not guarantee that a current platform offers the instrument or that an investor can trade it today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake 7: Trusting a ticker without checking the legal issuer

Similar names and shortened symbols can identify a fund, certificate or derivative. Confirm that the security details name China Construction Bank Corporation and identify the intended exchange.

What the official disclosures establish—and what they do not

The reviewed CCB investor materials establish the following:

  • CCB has an A-share line on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, code 601939.
  • CCB has an H-share line on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, code 00939, also shown as 939.
  • The H-share listing date stated by CCB is 27 October 2005.
  • The A-share listing date stated by CCB is 25 September 2007.
  • A European-listed fund can report CCB ordinary shares as an underlying holding.

They do not, by themselves, establish:

  • that CCB ordinary shares are directly listed on a European exchange;
  • that a specific European broker offers either Asian share line;
  • that a fund holding CCB is a substitute for buying CCB shares;
  • the current price, valuation, dividend outlook or investment merits of either line; or
  • the tax, settlement or eligibility outcome for a particular investor.

Keeping those boundaries visible prevents a correct ticker fact from being turned into an unsupported trading or investment claim.

A practical verification checklist

Use this checklist whenever a platform presents a purported European CCB ticker:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the legal issuer shown in the security factsheet.
  2. Record the exchange name exactly as displayed.
  3. Compare the code with 601939 for Shanghai or 00939/939 for Hong Kong.
  4. Confirm whether the instrument is an ordinary share, a fund unit or another product.
  5. Check the quoted currency and whether the price is delayed.
  6. Open the issuer’s latest investor or exchange disclosure to confirm that the listing information remains current.
  7. Ask the broker whether your country and account can trade that specific instrument.
  8. Review every fee and tax disclosure before submitting an order.

If any of these details conflict—for example, a result calls itself a CCB share but names a European exchange—treat the result as unverified until the issuer, exchange and instrument type are reconciled.

Frequently asked questions

What is China Construction Bank’s stock ticker?

CCB’s Shanghai A-share code is 601939. Its Hong Kong H-share is shown as 00939 in the current report and as 939 in some investor information and platforms.

Is 939 the same as 00939?

They are two presentations of the Hong Kong H-share code. Hong Kong identifiers are often displayed with five digits, while some systems remove leading zeros. Confirm that Hong Kong is the named exchange.

What is the difference between CCB 939 and 601939?

939/00939 identifies the Hong Kong H-share, while 601939 identifies the Shanghai A-share. They are separate exchange lines and should not be assumed to have identical trading conditions.

Can I buy CCB shares through a European broker?

It may be possible, but no general answer applies to every country or broker. Ask whether the broker supports Hong Kong or Shanghai, whether your account is eligible and what commissions, custody, currency and tax rules apply.

Does a London-listed fund mean CCB is listed in London?

No. It means the fund’s units trade in London and the fund reports CCB as an underlying holding. The London quotation belongs to the fund, not to CCB’s ordinary shares.

Are the A-shares and H-shares interchangeable?

No assumption should be made. They have different exchanges and codes, and the reviewed disclosures do not establish identical currency, liquidity, settlement, tax or eligibility conditions.

Does a visible price prove I can trade the stock?

No. A data service may show a quote even when your broker does not accept orders for that market or your account is not eligible. Check dealing permissions separately.

Is this listing information an investment recommendation?

No. The listing facts identify venues and codes only. They do not assess valuation, expected returns, suitability, dividend prospects or risk for any investor.

Bottom line for European readers

CCB’s disclosed ordinary-share listings are in Shanghai and Hong Kong, not Europe: 601939 is the Shanghai A-share and 00939/939 is the Hong Kong H-share. European investors may encounter CCB through a London-traded fund or another separate product, but that is indirect exposure. Whether you can trade either direct share line depends on your broker, jurisdiction and account permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is China Construction Bank directly listed on a European exchange?

CCB’s reviewed official disclosures identify Shanghai and Hong Kong ordinary-share listings, not a direct European ordinary-share listing.

What ticker should I use for China Construction Bank?

Use 601939 for the Shanghai A-share. Use 00939 or 939 for the Hong Kong H-share, depending on how the platform formats leading zeros.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a London fund still give me CCB exposure?

Yes. A London-traded fund may hold CCB shares, but you would own fund units rather than a directly London-listed CCB ordinary share.

Can every European investor trade 601939 or 00939?

No conclusion applies to every investor. Broker access, country rules, account permissions, costs and tax treatment must be checked for the specific account.

The Bottom Line

China Construction Bank’s ordinary shares are disclosed on Shanghai (601939) and Hong Kong (00939/939), not directly in Europe. A European fund may hold CCB, but that is indirect exposure. Verify the exchange, instrument type and broker eligibility before trading.
