Short answer: ChatGPT’s Chrome integration can read content from tabs you make available and can perform actions on signed-in websites after you authorize them. That makes it useful for research, editing and repetitive browser work, but the underlying Chrome permissions are broad enough to expose highly sensitive pages. Treat the extension as a powerful, trusted browser agent—not as a passive reader.
OpenAI’s confirmations, site allowlists, blocklists and history prompts reduce accidental access. They do not eliminate the need to inspect the account, URL and requested action before approving anything. As of October 16, 2026, the exact permission set and rollout can change, so check the current Chrome listing and OpenAI controls when you install or update it.
What ChatGPT’s Chrome integration can do
The extension can bring the current or another open tab into a conversation, read page content and work across live websites, including sites where you are already signed in. Its listing also describes browser actions such as entering data, editing documents, downloading files, organizing tabs and other operations. In practical terms, it can observe what is rendered in a tab and, when you approve a requested operation, interact with that site on your behalf.

That capability is different from simply asking ChatGPT about text you pasted into a chat. The extension can use the existing Chrome profile you selected, including its open tabs, cookies and active sessions. A task such as finding information in a private dashboard or filling a form may therefore involve data that never appears in the chat until the extension includes it as context.

What the Chrome permissions mean
Chrome’s permission language describes potential capability, not a promise that every permission is exercised on every request. However, the capability is broad enough that you should evaluate the extension as if it could reach any page covered by the granted scope.

The phrase “read and change all your data on websites you visit” therefore describes a real technical capability. It does not mean ChatGPT continuously uploads every page, but it does mean the extension could read or alter data on a page when the browser grants access and the task invokes it.
Can it read your other Chrome tabs?
It can bring context from open tabs into a chat when you select or authorize that context. Open tabs are not automatically equivalent to every tab being copied into every conversation; the extension’s controls are intended to ask before a new website by default. Nevertheless, a broad approval can permit work across multiple sites, and tab titles, URLs or grouped tabs may themselves be sensitive.

Before approving a task, look at which account is active, which URL is displayed and which tab or site the request targets. If the task does not require another tab, close it or decline the broader request rather than assuming that an open tab is harmless.
Can it see passwords, banking pages or private messages?
Passwords and one-time codes
The extension is designed to use an existing signed-in Chrome profile when that is the selected browser context. That can let it operate inside an authenticated session, but OpenAI instructs users to enter credentials only in the browser, never in the chat. Do not paste a password, one-time code, recovery code or private key into a prompt. If a login is required, type it into the browser’s own login form and keep the secret out of the conversation.
Banking and payment pages
Google’s explanation of all-website access explicitly includes bank accounts as an example of a sensitive site. A permission that covers those pages can technically read or modify what the page exposes. Keep banking and payment domains on a blocklist unless a particular task genuinely requires access, and do not approve an action merely because the page looks familiar.

Private messages and workplace systems
Webmail, direct messages, support consoles and employer systems are ordinary websites from Chrome’s perspective. Their contents can enter the browser context if you authorize the relevant site. Treat customer records, internal documents and private conversations as high-sensitivity data; use a separate browser context or the isolated built-in browser when the task does not need your existing session.

What happens when ChatGPT requests access
OpenAI describes a confirmation model with three practical choices:
- Allow once: grant access for the immediate task, limiting the chance that a later request reuses the same approval.
- Allow for this site: permit repeat work on one domain while keeping unrelated domains outside the approval.
- Allow all sites: approve a much wider scope. This is an elevated-risk choice because it can cover sensitive domains and future tasks.
New websites are requested by default rather than silently added. Browser-history access requires a prompt for the specific request, and OpenAI says there is no always-allow option for history. Those controls are useful guardrails, but a user can still approve a request that is too broad. Read the proposed site and action every time, especially when a task asks to upload, download, submit, delete or send something.

Does OpenAI keep a complete browsing history?
OpenAI says it does not store a separate complete record of every browser action performed by the extension. Instead, browser activity is stored when it becomes part of ChatGPT context. That can include page text, screenshots, tool calls, summaries, messages or other content the extension includes in the conversation.
This creates an important boundary: an action that stays outside the chat context is not described as a separate, complete extension log, while content brought into the conversation is handled under ChatGPT’s normal data controls for that account or workspace. Do not rely on the absence of a complete action log as a reason to share secrets; once sensitive material is included in context, it can be retained and governed like other ChatGPT content.

The choice of browser context determines what the assistant can reach. The built-in desktop browser runs in its own isolated browser state. The Chrome extension intentionally reaches the existing Chrome profile when you select it, which is why it can reuse current cookies, sessions, open tabs and installed extensions.

Use the isolated browser when you want a clean session and do not need existing logins or tabs. Choose the extension only when reusing the current Chrome profile is the reason for the task.
Safer setup and approval checklist
- Decide whether the task needs your existing profile. If it does not need your cookies, signed-in sessions or open tabs, use the isolated browser instead.
- Start with the narrowest site scope. Prefer allow-once for a one-off task, or a single-site approval for repeat work. Avoid all-site approval unless the task truly spans multiple domains.
- Maintain a blocklist for high-sensitivity domains. Keep banking, healthcare, employer systems and other confidential services blocked unless access is essential and you can supervise every step.
- Inspect the confirmation. Verify the active account, exact URL, requested operation and whether the task will upload, download, send, submit or delete anything.
- Keep secrets in the browser. Enter passwords and one-time codes only in the site’s browser form. Never put them in chat instructions or pasted page text.
- Limit the material you expose. Close unrelated tabs, remove unnecessary personal data from a page and avoid asking for a whole-site operation when a single document or field will do.
- Review outputs before they leave the site. Read generated messages, edited documents and form values before clicking a final send or submit control.
- Reconsider broad approvals. If a task unexpectedly asks for history, another domain or all-site access, stop and reassess instead of accepting the expansion automatically.
Prompt injection and misleading page content
Webpage text is untrusted context. A page can contain instructions aimed at the assistant rather than at you, including text that tries to override your request, expose confidential data or trigger an unrelated action. A convincing instruction on a page is not proof that it is safe to follow.
Keep the task narrowly worded, tell ChatGPT which page element is relevant and require confirmation before consequential actions. Treat unexpected requests to reveal secrets, open a new domain, download a file or change account settings as a warning sign. OpenAI’s guidance is to review the website before allowing ChatGPT to continue; that review is your opportunity to distinguish the site’s content from the action you actually intended.
When the extension is appropriate—and when it is not
Reasonable uses
- Summarizing a public article in the tab you explicitly selected.
- Reformatting a document in a known workspace after you inspect the proposed edits.
- Organizing a set of non-sensitive tabs with a one-time approval.
- Completing repetitive data entry on a low-risk site while checking each submitted value.
High-risk uses
- Entering or transmitting passwords, payment details, private keys or one-time codes.
- Reading banking, healthcare or employer systems without a specific need and close supervision.
- Allowing all-site access for a task that concerns one domain.
- Letting page instructions determine what to upload, send or delete.
- Leaving unrelated confidential tabs open while granting broad tab or history access.
If something looks wrong
Decline the request when the site, account or action does not match your intention. Cancel before a send, download, deletion or submission if the preview contains unexpected data. Narrow the approval to one site or one use, remove sensitive tabs from the working profile and repeat the task in the isolated browser when existing Chrome state is not required. If the extension asks for history or a new domain unexpectedly, treat that change in scope as a reason to stop and verify the task from the beginning.
Bottom line on safety
ChatGPT’s Chrome tab access can be safe for supervised, narrowly scoped work, but it is not low-privilege. The extension may read page content, operate in authenticated sessions and use broad Chrome capabilities that include all-website data, history, bookmarks, downloads and tabs. Use allow-once or per-site approvals, block sensitive domains, keep credentials in the browser and regard every webpage instruction as untrusted. The safest default is to use the isolated desktop browser unless the task specifically requires your existing Chrome profile.
