OpenAI confirmed a ChatGPT mobile-app incident on October 15, 2026 that disrupted login and account signup on both iOS and Android. The company said it applied a mitigation at 17:13 UTC and reported all impacted services fully recovered at 18:56 UTC the same day. If you are seeing an error now, check the live OpenAI Status page first; the published incident does not establish an ongoing outage or a device-side fault.
What was affected
OpenAI’s incident report initially described an issue affecting logins and signups across ChatGPT mobile applications. Six minutes later, the description was broadened to “widespread feature degradation,” specifically including login and signup problems in the ChatGPT iOS and Android apps.
The report did not say that every ChatGPT feature failed. Login and signup were the functions explicitly identified, and the incident description covered both supported mobile platforms. OpenAI did not publish a root cause, affected-user count, failure percentage or service-level statistic for this event.

Is ChatGPT down right now?
The incident record says this particular outage was resolved on October 15. That does not guarantee that a new problem cannot occur later. For the current state, use OpenAI’s official Status page, which reports operational conditions and maintains historical uptime information.

- Open the OpenAI Status page in a browser.
- Read the current status banner and the latest incident entries.
- Check whether the incident names ChatGPT, mobile applications, login or signup.
- Compare the timestamp of your failed attempt with the incident’s start, mitigation and recovery updates.
A status entry that names the same platform and time window is stronger evidence of a service outage than isolated reports on social media or an error seen on one device.
What to do if the app still will not let you sign in
First, rule out a continuing service incident
Refresh the official Status page and look for an active or recently resolved ChatGPT incident. OpenAI’s help guidance says that page is updated to reflect the condition of its operational systems.

Then check the scope of the failure
- Try the same account in a mobile browser or on another network, if available.
- Note whether the problem is login, new-account signup, or a different feature.
- Record the exact time and error message before contacting support.
These checks help distinguish a current server-side event from an account-specific or app-specific problem. They do not change the status of OpenAI’s systems.
Do not treat this incident as a hardware problem
The official incident record identifies a service degradation and does not identify a phone defect, home-network equipment failure or storage problem as the cause. Reinstalling the app, buying networking hardware or running device-cleanup software is therefore not an evidence-based remedy for this reported event.

Why you may still see an error after recovery
Recovery was announced at a specific time, so a failed attempt made before 18:56 UTC can be explained by the incident even if you read the notice later. Conversely, an error after recovery may represent a separate, unreported issue, an account problem or a local connectivity condition. The October 15 report does not provide enough information to attribute later failures to the same event.
