Short answer: not yet for everyone. Brotato: Primal Dread is an announced paid expansion, but it has not released at the time of writing. The developer has announced a November 2, 2026 launch and prices of $3.99, €3.99, £3.39, and CN¥18.00, while Steam still marks the DLC as unavailable. Returning players who already enjoy Brotato have a reasonable case if a prehistoric jungle, new build options, and the Mutation mechanic appeal to them. New players must also buy the base game, so they should decide whether they want Brotato itself before adding unreleased DLC. When does Brotato: Primal Dread come out?
Steam currently identifies the DLC as not yet available and shows 2026 as the planned year. The developer’s October 8 announcement gives November 2 as the intended release date. Do you need the Brotato base game?
Yes. The Steam DLC listing states that Brotato is required. Primal Dread cannot serve as a low-cost entry point by itself. - The prehistoric jungle theme and mutant-dinosaur threats are more interesting to you than another generic setting.
- You enjoy experimenting with build systems and want to see how Mutation’s item-copying interacts with existing strategies.
- You value new characters, weapons, items, music, and achievements even before the community has established optimal builds.
- The announced regional price is small enough that uncertainty about balance is acceptable for your entertainment budget.
Reasons to wait
- You need evidence that the new map is balanced, varied, and replayable; no post-launch testing is available yet.
- You prefer to buy only after seeing complete character and item details, boss behavior, or performance reports.

Is Primal Dread worth buying for new players?
New players face two separate decisions: whether Brotato is a game they want, and whether the unreleased expansion is worth adding. The expansion cannot answer the first question on its own because it requires the base game.
A lower-risk order of purchase
- Open the official Brotato Steam listing and check the current base-game price, supported operating system, and user-facing store information.
- Buy and play the base game if its core loop interests you. This lets you judge the controls, pacing, difficulty, and run structure without adding an unreleased product to the decision.
- When Primal Dread is available, read its live listing and confirm the local price, installation status, and any updated description.
- Buy the expansion if the jungle map, Mutation, and additional content match what you enjoyed in the base game; otherwise, wait for reviews or a later discount.
Buying both at once can make sense for someone who already knows they want the complete available package and accepts the uncertainty of a launch purchase. It is not the only sensible route, and the available evidence does not justify saying that every new player should purchase the DLC immediately.
