Bolotana, a small mountain municipality in Sardinia, is a candidate—not yet an established—Blue Zone. A 2026 study estimated that women who reached age 70 there in 2021–2025 had 20.85 additional years of life expectancy and a 13.83% conditional probability of surviving to 100. The estimates are striking, but they describe a short period, include substantial uncertainty, and do not explain what caused the pattern.

What did the study find about women in Bolotana?

Pes and colleagues’ 2026 study in Frontiers in Aging analyzed municipal demographic records to estimate late-life survival in Bolotana. For women who reached age 70 during the 2021–2025 analysis period, it reported:

  • Remaining life expectancy at 70: 20.85 years (95% confidence interval: 19.42–22.43). This is expected additional time after reaching 70, not life expectancy at birth.
  • Conditional survival from 70 to 100: 13.83% (95% confidence interval: 7.33–23.75%). This is an estimate for women who had reached 70, not the proportion of all Bolotana residents expected to become centenarians.

The female survival estimate exceeded the annual reference ranges reported for Nuoro Province, Sardinia, and Italy. Those comparisons are descriptive; the paper cautions against treating them as formal significance tests. The confidence interval also matters: the study’s estimate is not a precise forecast for an individual woman or a guarantee that the same pattern will persist.

How do the estimates compare for men?

The same analysis estimated 16.02 remaining years at age 70 for Bolotana men (95% CI 14.55–17.79), with a 4.92% probability of surviving from 70 to 100 (95% CI 1.58–12.76%). The contemporary results’ more notable distinction is the stronger estimate for women.

Bolotana residents reaching age 70 Estimated remaining life expectancy Estimated survival from 70 to 100
Women, 2021–2025 20.85 years (95% CI 19.42–22.43) 13.83% (95% CI 7.33–23.75%)
Men, 2021–2025 16.02 years (95% CI 14.55–17.79) 4.92% (95% CI 1.58–12.76%)

These are period life-table estimates: they summarize survival patterns in the specified period, rather than tracking a single group of 70-year-olds forward for 30 years. They should not be read as an individual prediction.

Why is the Blue Zone label still provisional?

The authors describe Bolotana as a possible new longevity Blue Zone, but say that longer observation and continued demographic validation are needed before it can be considered established. The main estimates cover 2021–2025, and survival-to-100 estimates in a small community are uncertain. The study’s own conclusion is: “Longer observation and continued demographic validation, are required before Bolotana can be considered an established longevity blue zone.”

Calendar period changes the picture. In a separate sensitivity analysis for 2015–2019, Bolotana’s late-life survival profile was less favorable than the historical estimate for the original Sardinian Blue Zone. Including 2020 modestly reduced Bolotana’s estimates. The paper’s benchmark pools 14 original Blue Zone municipalities for 2015–2019, while its main Bolotana estimates cover 2021–2025; these are historical comparisons, not contemporaneous controls.

That distinction is especially important because the historic Sardinian Blue Zone was noted for exceptional male longevity and a comparatively small sex difference. Bolotana’s contemporary female-skewed pattern is a contrast, not evidence that all Sardinian longevity has one shared explanation.

What records and measures did researchers use?

Bolotana is in the Marghine area of central Sardinia, roughly 110 km from the historically identified Sardinian Blue Zone. Researchers constructed sex-specific partial period life tables from municipal civil records for 2021–2025. Their methods describe validating ages using civil and parish records.

They focused on two different measures: remaining life expectancy at age 70 and the conditional probability of surviving from 70 to 100. The study also examined historical birth cohorts, which answer a different question. Among 3,060 people born in Bolotana from 1900 through 1925, 38 were documented to have reached 100. The study’s Extreme Longevity Index for those cohorts was 1,242 centenarians per 100,000 live births (exact 95% CI 880–1,701). This cohort statistic is not interchangeable with the 2021–2025 period estimates.

Does the study explain why women may be living longer?

No. The study raises possible explanations—including genetics, diet, physical activity, family support, social cohesion, residential continuity, and access to care—but it did not test which factors caused the survival estimates or how much each contributed. The record-based analysis measures demographic patterns; it is not a lifestyle experiment or an intervention trial.

A 2025 physical-activity study of older adults in the established Sardinian Blue Zone reported a more active lifestyle among women in that population and an association between cognitive functioning and moderate-to-vigorous activity. Those findings concern a different population and do not establish the cause of Bolotana’s estimates.

What does the finding mean for readers?

It makes Bolotana a compelling subject for further demographic study, particularly because the recent estimates suggest a notable late-life survival pattern among women. It does not show that a particular diet, exercise routine, family structure, or genetic profile will reproduce that pattern elsewhere. Dan Buettner, a Blue Zones project leader, called Bolotana “by some measures” the most extraordinary Blue Zone and said it was “waxing.” That is his characterization, not the peer-reviewed study’s settled designation.

The useful distinction is between an intriguing signal and an established explanation: Bolotana’s recent estimates merit attention, but the period-specific results, confidence intervals, historical comparison, and authors’ call for more observation all argue against treating the Blue Zone label—or any proposed cause—as proven.
