Bitcoin is a conditional and unreliable inflation hedge. Some research finds it rises after unexpected U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation, but that response depends on the inflation measure, time period and market regime. It does not appear for Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (Core PCE) in the latest cited study, weakens after COVID-19, and is less persistent than gold’s relationship with inflation. Bitcoin also behaves like a risk-sensitive asset, so it can fall with equities and other financial markets when investors seek safety.
What an inflation hedge is supposed to do
An inflation hedge is an asset expected to preserve purchasing power when prices rise. The useful test is not whether the asset occasionally increases during an inflation headline. It is whether its real value holds up across different inflation regimes, including periods of unexpected inflation, changing interest rates and market stress.
Most Bitcoin evidence cited for this question measures short-run returns after inflation news or changes in inflation expectations. That is narrower than proving that a person who buys Bitcoin can preserve spending power over a specific holding period. The studies do not establish a guaranteed duration, allocation, future return or protection from fees, taxes, custody failures, exchange failures or regulatory changes.
Does Bitcoin go up when inflation rises?
Unexpected CPI inflation can produce a positive response
Rodriguez and Colombo’s 2025 study uses vector autoregression models and monthly U.S. data from August 2010 through January 2023. It identifies inflation surprises in CPI and Core PCE announcements. Bitcoin returns increase after a positive CPI shock in the model, but the result is sensitive to the sample and is concentrated in earlier years.

The same study finds no comparable response to Core PCE shocks. Core PCE excludes food and energy prices and is the Federal Reserve’s preferred underlying inflation measure, while CPI is the more familiar consumer-price gauge. A Bitcoin response to one index therefore cannot be treated as a response to “inflation” in every definition.
The relationship weakens after COVID-19
Rodriguez and Colombo report that the CPI result weakens after the COVID-19 period. That matters because the post-2020 market included rapid monetary tightening, changing liquidity conditions and growing institutional participation. A relationship found mainly in the earlier sample may not describe the market investors face now.
What happens when inflation expectations change?
Smales, in a study first published in Accounting & Finance on 16 November 2023, tests Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency returns against changes in U.S. inflation expectations and compares the results with gold.
Bitcoin shows positive relationships only in limited circumstances, especially for short-term expectations and when expected inflation is below the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. The relationship is not a consistent response across all expectation measures. Gold’s relationship is more robust in the comparisons reported by the study.
This distinction is important. An expected increase in prices can already be reflected in market prices before an official release. An unexpected increase is information that surprises investors. Bitcoin may react differently to those two events, so a study of expectations cannot be substituted for a study of CPI or Core PCE surprises.

Why the answer changes across market regimes
Bitcoin does not have one stable macroeconomic identity
A New York Fed event study by Benigno and Rosa, Staff Report 1052 published in February 2023, examines intraday Bitcoin behavior around monetary and macroeconomic news. In that sample, Bitcoin was orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news, unlike other U.S. asset classes. In practical terms, the study did not find a dependable immediate reaction pattern that would make Bitcoin a straightforward macroeconomic hedge.
That finding does not contradict the CPI result from the monthly VAR study. The methods, time horizons, news definitions and samples differ. It does show why a positive average response in one design should not be promoted to a universal rule.

Interest rates and liquidity can dominate the inflation story
IMF Working Paper 23/163, published 4 August 2023, identifies a crypto factor that explains 80% of variation in crypto prices. The paper reports increasing equity correlation as institutional participation grows and finds that Federal Reserve tightening reduces the crypto factor.
When inflation leads markets to expect higher policy rates, the rate and liquidity effect can outweigh any narrative that Bitcoin’s supply is limited. A positive response to an inflation surprise can therefore coexist with substantial losses during a tightening cycle.
Does Bitcoin diversify a portfolio during a crisis?
IMF Working Paper 23/213, published 29 September 2023, finds that return and volatility spillovers between crypto and financial assets increase during turbulence and risk-off episodes. The paper says that increased correlation in those periods suggests crypto assets can act as conduits for financial-market shocks.

This is a direct challenge to the diversification version of the hedge thesis. A useful diversifier should be more independent when stocks and other risk assets are under pressure. If Bitcoin becomes more connected to those assets during a sell-off, holding it may not offset losses when protection is most needed.

Gold is the more established comparator in the cited evidence. Smales finds a more robust relationship between gold and inflation expectations, while Rodriguez and Colombo report a stronger or more persistent inflation-hedging relationship for gold than for Bitcoin.

The table compares what these studies actually tested. It is not a forecast, and it does not establish that either asset will protect purchasing power in every country or inflation episode.
Can Bitcoin preserve purchasing power during a currency crisis?
The cited evidence cannot answer that question universally. The studies focus on U.S. inflation measures, U.S. expectations, U.S. monetary news and international market connectedness. They do not establish a result for every country, exchange-rate regime or currency crisis.
Bitcoin’s global tradability may make it relevant in a crisis where local money or payment rails are restricted, but that is a separate use case from a measured inflation hedge. A currency crisis can also bring capital controls, exchange shutdowns, legal restrictions, wide spreads and severe volatility. None of those outcomes is quantified by the cited studies, so they should be treated as implementation risks rather than solved by the hedge label.

Should you buy Bitcoin when inflation is high?
High current inflation alone is not a sufficient buy signal. Before treating Bitcoin as part of an inflation plan, separate the decision into four questions.
1. Which inflation measure is rising?
Check whether the concern is headline CPI, core inflation, Core PCE, an inflation-expectations measure or a local-currency collapse. The strongest cited Bitcoin result is tied to unexpected U.S. CPI shocks, not every measure.
2. Is the move expected or a surprise?
Markets can price in expected inflation. The evidence for Bitcoin is limited when researchers examine expectations, while the positive CPI response concerns surprises. Do not assume that a widely anticipated inflation report will produce the same reaction.
3. What is monetary policy likely to do?
If inflation raises expectations of Federal Reserve tightening, higher rates and reduced liquidity may pressure Bitcoin. The IMF’s 2023 work specifically reports that tightening reduces the crypto factor that explains most variation in crypto prices.

IMF evidence shows stronger crypto-financial spillovers during turbulence. An investor who needs stable near-term purchasing power may be unable to wait through a drawdown, even if a long-run average relationship later turns positive.

Does Bitcoin’s fixed supply prove it is an inflation hedge?
No. A programmed supply limit is a monetary-policy narrative, not empirical proof of realized purchasing-power protection. The cited studies test returns, inflation expectations, inflation surprises and market reactions. They do not show that a fixed supply guarantees positive real returns or a particular outcome over any holding period.
Supply scarcity can influence investor demand, but price also depends on liquidity, interest rates, equity-market conditions and risk appetite. Those forces explain why Bitcoin can respond positively to one inflation shock and still suffer substantial losses in another regime.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
- Bitcoin can rise after a positive U.S. CPI surprise in the Rodriguez and Colombo 2025 sample.
- That result does not appear for Core PCE surprises and is concentrated before the post-COVID period.
- Positive relationships with inflation expectations are limited, especially compared with gold, according to Smales’s 2023 study.
- Bitcoin’s immediate response to monetary and macroeconomic news was not dependable in the New York Fed’s event-study sample.
- Institutional participation has coincided with greater equity correlation, and Federal Reserve tightening has reduced the crypto factor in IMF analysis.
- Crypto-market spillovers increase during turbulence and risk-off episodes, weakening the case that Bitcoin reliably diversifies losses.
- No cited study supplies a guaranteed holding period, allocation percentage, future return or protection after taxes, fees, custody problems, exchange failures or regulatory changes.
A practical way to frame the decision
Use Bitcoin, if at all, as a volatile asset with a possible but unproven inflation role—not as a substitute for cash needed soon or as guaranteed insurance against rising prices. Compare the purchase with alternatives on the risks that matter to your situation:

- Time horizon: match the asset to when the money must be available, because the studies do not establish a safe minimum holding period.
- Drawdown capacity: assume that a positive inflation response can coexist with large losses.
- Portfolio correlation: account for the possibility that crypto becomes more correlated with equities during a crisis.
- Implementation: investigate custody, liquidity, fees, taxes, counterparty exposure and local regulation separately; those factors were not tested in the cited research.
Bottom line on Bitcoin and inflation
Bitcoin is, at best, a context-specific inflation hedge. The strongest evidence is a conditional rise after unexpected U.S. CPI inflation in an earlier sample, while Core PCE results, expectation-based tests, macro-news studies and risk-off behavior all limit the claim. Gold has the more established relationship in the cited comparisons. Bitcoin may have a place in a portfolio for investors who understand its volatility and market sensitivity, but high inflation by itself is not reliable evidence that buying it will preserve purchasing power.
