BCU Bank’s Contents Standard covers a range of listed events and provides renter-specific help with temporary accommodation after an insured event, but several benefits cost extra and important limits apply. The public product page does not provide a premium for your circumstances, so whether it is good value depends on your quote, your belongings and the policy documents that apply to you.
Who provides BCU Bank contents insurance?
BCU Bank identifies Police & Nurses Limited (BCU Bank) as acting under its own Australian financial services licence and under agreement with Insurance Australia Limited (AFSL 227681), which issues the policy under the CGU brand. CGU is the claims contact named on the BCU contents insurance page. BCU is not identified there as the risk-bearing insurer.
The product page is general information, not a determination that the policy fits a particular renter. The current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), Key Facts Sheet and your Certificate of Insurance set out the operative terms, selected options, limits and excesses.

BCU’s overview lists cover for contents against events including theft and vandalism, flood and rainwater run-off, storm, storm surge and tsunami, and fire, including bushfire. Its comparison page also lists accidental glass breakage, animal damage, deliberate or intentional acts, earthquake, escape of water or liquid, explosion, impact, lightning, riot or civil commotion, and theft or attempted theft for both Contents Standard and Contents Plus.

These are summaries, not a guarantee that every loss involving one of those events is covered. Definitions, conditions and exclusions in the applicable PDS determine whether a claim is covered. BCU specifically notes that CGU does not cover actions of the sea such as tides and waves.
Temporary accommodation and food spoilage
If a covered event makes a tenant’s home unliveable, BCU says CGU pays reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation. The individual claim remains subject to the policy’s terms. The published food spoilage maximum is $500 for Contents Standard; BCU lists $2,000 for Contents Plus. The page also refers to prescription medicine after a covered event, but readers should check the PDS for the applicable conditions and limits.
Standard, Plus and optional benefits
The main differences published by BCU concern two benefits that are optional with Standard but included with Plus. Portable contents and valuable contents are optional with either level.
| Benefit | Contents Standard | Contents Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental damage at home | Optional | Included |
| Electrical motor burnout | Optional | Included |
| Portable contents away from home | Optional | Optional |
| Valuable contents | Optional | Optional |
| Food spoilage maximum shown on BCU’s current product page | $500 | $2,000 |
BCU’s home policy comparison page also lists benefits such as cover for contents away from home, storage and transit, moving to a new home, identity theft, temporary accommodation, visitors’ belongings and replacement keys and locks. Whether a benefit applies, and its limits, can depend on your chosen cover and the policy terms.

Limits to check for valuables and items outside the home
Valuables kept at home
Without the valuable contents option, BCU says works of art, collections, jewellery and watches share a combined $2,500 limit. Valuable contents is an option to increase cover for items such as art, jewellery and collectables. Check the PDS and your Certificate of Insurance for how items must be described or listed, the applicable limits and any conditions; the public summary does not establish what an individual item will cost to insure.
Portable belongings
Portable contents is optional and is intended for selected belongings taken outside the home, such as glasses, jewellery, laptops and phones. BCU’s page indicates a limit of up to $10,000 per item unless it is listed separately. Other limits apply outside Australia and New Zealand. The page also lists exclusions, including scratches or dents, items being cleaned or repaired, and specified sporting, musical, drone and firearms use. Bicycles are excluded while used in a competitive race or time trial. Check the PDS for the full wording and any other exclusions.

What renters should check before choosing a level
- Estimate replacement costs: Make an inventory and use realistic costs to repair or replace your belongings. BCU warns that under-insuring can leave you short and describes its online calculator as guidance. It says payment will be the actual repair or replacement cost if the insured amount exceeds that cost.
- Consider storage before moving items: BCU says general contents may be covered in storage only if CGU is informed before the items are moved and its acceptance criteria are met. Valuable contents are not covered while stored.
- Check the excess and exclusions: BCU directs customers to their Certificate of Insurance for applicable excesses and exclusion periods. There is no single excess figure established for every renter.
- Compare the right costs: Review the premium for your selected options alongside the limits, excess, exclusions and claim settlement terms. BCU’s public pages do not state an individual quote or establish that either level is cheaper than alternatives.
Which policy documents apply?
Use BCU’s insurance disclosure document index to locate the current Home Insurance PDS and Home Contents Key Facts Sheet. BCU says customers whose policies were issued before 20 May 2025 should contact CGU for the relevant PDS, Target Market Determination or Key Facts Sheet. Your Certificate of Insurance is also important because it records your selected cover and applicable excesses.
