Verizon narrowly leads AT&T on Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. Coverage Experience score, but that does not mean it will work better at your address—or be the better value for your plan. Check coverage where you live, work, and travel, then compare the actual bill and features for the account you would buy.
Which has better coverage, AT&T or Verizon?
On Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. report, Verizon scored 9.7 out of 10 for Coverage Experience and AT&T scored 9.3. The metric measures how extensively people encounter a network in places they live, work, and travel; it is not a percentage of U.S. land area or a guarantee of service at a particular location. Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. Mobile Network Experience Report also gave T-Mobile 9.0 on the same metric.
That result supports a narrow conclusion: Verizon had the higher score on this particular nationwide user-experience measure. The 0.4-point difference does not establish that Verizon is stronger at every home, office, highway, or indoor location.
Is AT&T or Verizon better where I live?
Check both carriers at the specific addresses and routes that matter to you. A national score is a useful screening signal, but local terrain, building materials, network load, device compatibility, and whether a location is indoors can affect the experience. If possible, validate with a trial or a real device on the network before switching.

The AT&T-versus-Verizon coverage map from Coverage Critic uses FCC Broadband Data Collection data released in May 2026 and reflecting networks as of December 2025, supplemented with crowdsourced data. It depicts predicted outdoor native coverage, not roaming coverage. Indoor signal may be weaker than the map suggests.
Interpret carrier coverage claims carefully
AT&T says its network reaches more than 99% of the U.S. population and its 5G network reaches over 316 million people. These are AT&T’s own population-based claims, not independent comparisons with Verizon’s coverage or the Opensignal score. AT&T’s approximate 5G map includes coverage available as of March 2025; its page also notes that coverage is not everywhere and that 5G requires a compatible plan and device. Published starting prices are not necessarily the amount you will pay. Verizon’s 2026 plan comparison lists a one-line starting rate of $45 per month for Simplicity, or $30 with the switch discount shown on its page. It lists AT&T Value 2.0 at $65 per month and T-Mobile Essentials Saver at $55, with AutoPay discounts included. The page says taxes and fees are excluded on most plans. A separate July 14, 2026 comparison by Reviews.org gives an AT&T Value 2.0 example of $50 per line under its stated AutoPay and paperless-billing assumptions, and a Verizon Simplicity example starting at $45—or $30 with AutoPay and the stated switch discount. Different published assumptions produce different figures, so do not combine the prices into a single like-for-like rate. Is Verizon worth the extra cost?
It depends on whether the coverage and plan features you need justify the difference on your actual bill. Compare the same line count, discount eligibility, and service needs rather than choosing from a single-line headline price.

- Lines and discounts: Check the total for your household. One-line pricing may not predict the per-line or total cost for a family account.
- Data and priority: Compare any premium or high-speed data allotment, what “unlimited” includes, and what happens during congestion or after an allowance.
- Hotspot: Check the included high-speed hotspot data and the speed or limits that apply afterward.
- Travel: Verify the countries, roaming allowances, and international calling or texting you would actually use.
- Fees and taxes: Include activation, upgrade, device-payment, regulatory, and tax charges where applicable.
- Perks and bundles: Count streaming or other benefits only if your household would otherwise pay for them. Consider a home-internet bundle only if service is available and you want that service.
Verizon’s comparison describes differences by plan tier, including premium-data access, hotspot allowances, international features, fees, and optional entertainment perks. Which is cheaper for a family plan?
The cited prices do not establish a universal family-plan winner: they are one-line examples or figures presented with particular discount assumptions, while family totals depend on line count, the plans selected, discounts, taxes, and fees. Does Verizon or AT&T have better rural coverage?
The January 2026 national Coverage Experience score does not answer which carrier works better in a particular rural community or along a particular route. Check the specific towns, roads, and properties you use on both coverage maps, and look for a way to test service on the relevant network. Map predictions describe coverage, not a guarantee of signal in every building or at every point on a road.
How to make the decision
- List your must-cover places: Include home, work, regular travel routes, and destinations where you need reliable service.
- Check local coverage: Compare each carrier’s map for those places and account for the map’s outdoor and native-coverage limitations.
- Price your actual account: Request totals for the same number of lines, discount eligibility, and plan tier. Include taxes and fees where they apply.
- Match features to your use: Compare data treatment, hotspot, travel options, and any perks you would genuinely use.
- Validate before switching: Where available, try the network at the locations that matter before relying on a nationwide ranking.
Verdict
Choose Verizon if it checks out better in the places you use and its plan’s total cost and features fit your needs. Choose AT&T if it provides the local coverage you need at a better price or with better-fitting plan terms. Verizon’s January 2026 Opensignal lead is real but narrow and metric-specific; your locations and final bill should decide the switch.
