ASUS mesh WiFi is designed mainly to extend coverage, not guarantee a higher peak speed. ASUS Canada sums up the distinction this way: “Mesh WiFi is not really faster, but goes farther.” Whether AiMesh feels faster in your home depends on the wireless or Ethernet connection between routers, node placement, your devices, and the capabilities and firmware of the exact models you use.
Does ASUS mesh WiFi make your internet faster?
Usually, mesh is a coverage solution. It can bring a usable connection to rooms that a single router does not reach well, but adding nodes does not automatically increase the speed of your internet plan or the maximum speed a nearby device can get from the main router. ASUS presents mesh’s main benefit as range rather than speed in its whole-home mesh WiFi FAQ.
That distinction matters when choosing a setup. In a small home where a single router already provides strong coverage, another node may add little. In a larger or more obstructed home, a well-placed node may improve the connection in a weak area, even if the far-room speed is still lower than the speed beside the main router.

Advertised WiFi rates are not a prediction of the internet speed a particular device will receive: the client’s radio, the node-to-router link, configuration, and home conditions all constrain the result.

What affects AiMesh speed and consistency?
The link between the main router and the node
A node must communicate with the main AiMesh router, either over Ethernet or wirelessly. ASUS says AiMesh can analyze wireless signal strength across available bands and choose a wired or wireless inter-router path automatically; users can also prioritize a wired path in the described interface. A wireless node with a weak connection to the main unit may provide poor results even when a client is close to that node.
Placement and the home layout
Distance and building materials affect wireless coverage. Place a node where its connection back to the main router remains usable, rather than putting it in the dead zone and expecting the node count alone to solve the problem. The right location balances a solid link to the main unit with proximity to the area that needs coverage.

Client devices, bands, and model capabilities
The phone, laptop, or other client must support the relevant WiFi bands and features. The router and every node link also have to support the capabilities you want. WiFi generation labels or AiMesh compatibility alone do not establish end-to-end throughput, and features may differ across generations and firmware.

Choose a backhaul: Ethernet or wireless
Backhaul is the connection between the main AiMesh router and its nodes. ASUS supports both Ethernet and wireless backhaul. Ethernet avoids relying on a wireless inter-node path where cabling is practical; wireless backhaul avoids running cable but depends on the node’s signal quality, available bands, and configuration.

In ASUS’s documented basic wired example, the main router’s LAN port connects to the node’s WAN port. The described connection priority is Auto by default, and WAN first can be selected to prioritize a wired backhaul. Interface labels and behavior may vary by router model or software version. See ASUS’s AiMesh Ethernet backhaul setup instructions for the applicable model and installation.
When a switch is part of the wired setup
For its documented AiMesh or ZenWiFi setup using a network switch, ASUS specifies a switch supporting 10/100/1000Tbase and Cat5e-or-better Ethernet cable. ASUS also cautions against connecting node ports to trunk ports in that described setup. Router mode, AP mode, DHCP configuration, and ISP modem restrictions can change the correct topology; follow the ASUS switch-based Ethernet backhaul instructions for your configuration, and check with your ISP if the modem restricts attached devices.

A Cat6 cable is one suitable cable category for building a wired backhaul, but ASUS’s cited setup does not require Cat6 specifically or promise a particular speed improvement from it. The cable provides the wired link; the result still depends on the network equipment and configuration.

Set up Ethernet Backhaul Mode carefully
Ethernet Backhaul Mode is not the same as simply connecting a cable and leaving the system on automatic path selection. ASUS says to connect all nodes to an uplink access point by Ethernet before enabling the mode; otherwise, nodes may lose their uplink. ASUS places the setting under AiMesh > System Settings in the web interface and says availability depends on firmware later than 386.xxxx. Check the exact router’s documentation because interface details and support vary.

- Connect the nodes first. Establish the required Ethernet connections from each node to the uplink access point or applicable network equipment.
- Open the router’s web interface. Find AiMesh > System Settings; the location or wording may differ by model and firmware.
- Enable Ethernet Backhaul Mode only after the wired topology is in place. If a node loses its uplink, review the physical connection and setup requirements before changing other settings.
On a tri-band system, enabling wired backhaul may make the previously dedicated 5 GHz-2 band available to client devices. ASUS explains this behavior in its Ethernet Backhaul Mode and backhaul priority guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which wireless backhaul band should you use?
On supported tri-band ASUS systems, ASUS says the 5 GHz-2 or 6 GHz band is prioritized as a dedicated wireless backhaul by default. A dedicated band reserves that capacity for the node-to-router link rather than sharing it with end devices. If clients do not need the high-frequency band, ASUS recommends keeping it dedicated to backhaul.
Sharing the high-frequency band can be an option when clients need it for workloads such as gaming or streaming, or when nodes use Ethernet backhaul. The trade-off is that the band’s bandwidth is shared between backhaul and clients, and the dedicated-backhaul priority is replaced. The available bands and settings depend on the exact model and configuration. ASUS’s wireless backhaul FAQ describes these choices.
Check AiMesh compatibility before adding a router
ASUS says compatible ASUS routers can be combined in AiMesh, which lets owners add a router later to extend coverage. Compatibility does not mean every feature behaves identically across models. Before buying or combining routers, verify the exact models’ AiMesh support, band configuration, Ethernet port speeds, firmware requirements, and support for the features you intend to use. ASUS’s mesh FAQ discusses compatible product mixes.
WiFi 7 and MLO limitations
ASUS warns that enabling MLO on a primary WiFi 7 router can create compatibility problems with existing nodes. In the scenario ASUS describes, a node without MLO will not broadcast 6 GHz. ASUS also says MLO backhaul can be used only by the first WiFi 7 node in a multi-node AiMesh setup and supports only the same model. These rules may change with product or firmware updates, so check ASUS’s AiMesh setup guidance for WiFi 7 and MLO against the exact equipment and software version.
Quick Recap
Practical way to decide whether mesh is right for you
- Consider mesh when coverage is the problem. It can extend WiFi into areas a single router does not serve well, provided nodes have a usable path back to the main unit.
- Consider Ethernet backhaul when you can run cable. It removes the wireless inter-node link from the backhaul path and can free wireless capacity for clients.
- Use wireless backhaul when cabling is impractical. Place nodes to preserve a solid connection, and choose dedicated or shared band behavior based on whether clients need the high-frequency band.
- Check the complete system, not just the newest router. Client support, node compatibility, firmware, and port capabilities all matter to the features and throughput available end to end.
