Short answer: AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) is not a conventional value buy. More than 60 mobile-network-operator partners collectively cover over 3 billion subscribers, but those are carriers’ reachable network footprints—not 3 billion people already paying AST SpaceMobile. The stock offers high-upside exposure to direct-to-device connectivity, yet its valuation still assumes rapid constellation deployment, service activation and revenue growth.
For most investors, the evidence supports a speculative, milestone-driven watchlist position—or a small high-risk allocation for those who can tolerate major volatility—rather than an unconditional buy.
What the 3 billion subscriber figure actually means
Carrier reach is distribution, not customers
AST SpaceMobile’s Q2 2026 update says more than 60 mobile-network operators (MNOs) have partnerships covering over 3 billion subscribers. The figure measures the combined customer bases of partner networks. It does not mean AST SpaceMobile has activated 3 billion users, bills them directly or earns recurring revenue from all of them.

The partnerships matter because AST’s direct-to-device model depends on existing carriers for spectrum rights, customer relationships, distribution and, in many markets, regulatory coordination. A carrier can make service available to its customers, but actual revenue still requires satellites in the right orbits, regulatory approval, technical integration, commercial launch and customer usage.

How the partnership model could produce revenue
AST SpaceMobile can potentially monetize through carrier agreements, wholesale connectivity, government work and usage generated when subscribers connect directly to its satellites. The company reported approximately $1.30 billion in aggregate contracted revenue backlog in its Q2 2026 release. Backlog is evidence of commercial commitments, but it is not the same as revenue already recognized or cash already collected; timing depends on deployment and the terms of each contract.
Verizon is a named U.S. partner for direct-to-cellular service beginning in 2026. The broader partner count gives AST a route to scale if launches and network activation proceed as planned, but it also makes execution across carriers and countries a central part of the investment case.
What AST SpaceMobile is building
Direct-to-device cellular broadband
AST SpaceMobile is developing a satellite network intended to connect ordinary mobile phones without a dedicated satellite handset. Its SpaceMobile Network materials describe the newest 2,400-square-foot satellites as supporting 10 GHz of processing bandwidth and peak speeds above 150 Mbps per coverage cell. The stated use cases include voice, video, text and streaming.

The technology is designed to complement terrestrial networks, filling coverage gaps rather than replacing every cellular tower. That distinction is important: the commercial opportunity depends on reliable service in places where conventional networks are unavailable or uneconomic, while carriers retain the customer relationship.
The constellation is the gating item
AST reported 13 spacecraft in orbit after the BlueBird 8–13 deployment sequence. It has targeted 45 to 60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026. Reaching that target would improve coverage and capacity, but it requires a dependable manufacturing and launch cadence, successful on-orbit operation and the regulatory permissions needed to provide service.
Until the constellation is large enough for consistent coverage, the subscriber-reach number remains mainly a distribution option rather than proof of a mature network.

Revenue is growing, but from an early base

The jump from $70.9 million in 2025 revenue to $150 million–$200 million of 2026 guidance would represent rapid growth if achieved. However, the absolute base remains small relative to the company’s market value, and revenue includes more than consumer cellular service. Investors should track how much comes from repeatable commercial usage rather than one-time development, government or contract milestones.

Why the valuation leaves little room for mistakes
ASTS closed at $40.66 on October 16, 2026, according to StockAnalysis. Its S&P Global-based consensus from 13 analysts was Hold, with an average target of $74.28, a low target of $42.50 and a high target of $108. The wide range signals substantial disagreement about execution and long-term value rather than a settled fair price.

A trailing price-to-sales ratio of 149.24 means the market is valuing future revenue expansion, not current earnings power. The negative Q2 FY2026 profit margin underscores that the business is still investing ahead of scale. Even if the satellite network succeeds technically, shareholders could face dilution or a lower valuation multiple if growth arrives later than expected.

The risks that can break the ASTS thesis
Deployment and launch risk
AST’s 10-K identifies dependence on launch-provider availability, timing and cost. A missed launch window, manufacturing bottleneck or satellite failure could delay coverage and push revenue recognition into later periods. The gap between 13 satellites in orbit and the 45–60 target is therefore a measurable execution challenge, not a minor scheduling detail.
Regulatory, spectrum and partner risk
Direct-to-device service requires regulatory approvals and spectrum coordination across multiple countries. AST also relies on partners to integrate service, market it and activate customers. Delayed approvals, changes in spectrum rights or slower carrier rollout could reduce the commercial value of the partnership network.
Competition and financing risk
The 10-K cites competition from wireless and satellite operators, limited operating history and the possibility that SpaceMobile service never generates commercially viable revenue. Building and launching a large constellation requires substantial capital. Additional financing could increase share dilution, while higher launch or construction costs could weaken the path to profitability.

Demand and monetization risk
Covered subscribers are a potential market, not guaranteed usage. Customers may use the service only in limited situations, carriers may negotiate lower wholesale economics, or technical performance may not meet expectations in difficult environments. Any of those outcomes would make the $1.30 billion backlog harder to convert into durable, high-margin revenue.
How to evaluate ASTS before buying
Evidence that would strengthen the bull case
- Satellite deployment continues toward the 45–60 spacecraft end-2026 target.
- Carriers begin activating direct-to-cellular service, including the planned 2026 U.S. rollout.
- Quarterly revenue increasingly reflects recurring service usage rather than development or government work.
- The company converts a meaningful portion of its contracted backlog into recognized revenue without excessive dilution.
- On-orbit performance demonstrates the advertised broadband use cases across larger coverage areas.
Evidence that would weaken the thesis
- Launches or manufacturing slip materially behind the constellation plan.
- Regulatory approvals or spectrum arrangements delay commercial service.
- Revenue guidance is reduced, or backlog conversion remains slow.
- Cash needs force financing on terms that significantly dilute existing shareholders.
- Carrier partnerships generate publicity but little paid usage or repeatable revenue.
A practical decision framework
- Separate partner reach from paying customers when modeling revenue; do not multiply 3 billion subscribers by an assumed fee without evidence of activation and usage.
- Monitor spacecraft in orbit and launch cadence each quarter against the 45–60 target.
- Compare recognized revenue with the $1.30 billion backlog to measure conversion, not just new contract announcements.
- Review cash balances, capital spending and share issuance before adding to a position.
- Size any investment as speculative exposure and define in advance what launch, regulatory or revenue failures would invalidate the thesis.
AST SpaceMobile can suit investors seeking volatile exposure to a potentially large direct-to-device market and who can accept binary execution risk. Its current figures do not support treating ASTS as a conventional value stock: the carrier reach is strategically meaningful, but the constellation, commercial activation and financial model still have to prove they can turn that reach into profitable scale.
