Yes—if you want a large Viking action RPG built around exploration, melee combat, raids, alliances, and settlement building. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is less suitable if you want a short, tightly paced campaign or a game focused primarily on stealth and classic Assassin-versus-Templar missions. Its regional story structure and enormous amount of optional activity are its defining strengths and its biggest commitment.
You do not need to know every earlier Assassin’s Creed plot point to follow Eivor’s main journey. Returning players will recognize more of the historical and modern-day context, but a first-time player can understand the central premise: Eivor leads a Viking clan from Norway to England, establishes Ravensthorpe, and builds alliances through exploration, combat, and negotiation. This guide explains what the game actually asks you to do, how its systems fit together, which edition makes sense, and who should—or should not—buy it.
What kind of game is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?
Valhalla is an open-world action RPG set during the Viking expansion into ninth-century England. You play as Eivor, a Viking warrior whose clan leaves Norway because of conflict and limited resources. After arriving in England, Eivor works to secure territory, support the settlement of Ravensthorpe, and form alliances with regional leaders.
The game combines several activities rather than pursuing one pure identity:
#1 Best Overall
- Viking Warrior Experience: Step into the role of Eivor, a fierce Viking raider driven by tales of battle and glory, as you lead your clan from the harsh shores of Norway to the rich lands of England's Dark Ages
- Epic Raiding Gameplay: Launch devastating raids on Saxon troops and fortresses, gathering resources and wealth to strengthen your clan while carving your path through a beautifully realized open world
- Settlement Building: Establish and expand your own Viking settlement, constructing buildings, recruiting new clan members, and customizing your growing community to create a thriving home for your people
- Political Power Dynamics: Forge strategic alliances with various kingdoms and factions across England, making critical decisions that shape your influence and determine your clan's future in a land torn by conflict
- PlayStation 5 Optimized: Experience enhanced graphics, faster loading times, and immersive gameplay designed specifically for PlayStation 5 hardware, bringing the Viking Age to life with stunning visual fidelity
- Action combat: Fight with one-handed or two-handed weapons, shields, bows, and special abilities.
- Assassination: Use the Hidden Blade and stealth approaches when a target or location allows it.
- Raiding: Lead your crew against monasteries and fortified locations to collect supplies and materials.
- Exploration: Travel across a broad map containing towns, ruins, caves, mysteries, collectibles, and optional encounters.
- Settlement development: Spend resources to add buildings and unlock services in Ravensthorpe.
- Role-playing choices: Make dialogue and story decisions that shape relationships and some outcomes.
That mix is important to set expectations. Valhalla is a Viking-themed action RPG with stealth options, not a stealth game in which every mission is designed around remaining unseen.
Can a first-time player follow the story?
Yes. The main setup is straightforward: Eivor’s clan needs a new home, England offers opportunity and danger, and survival depends on alliances and resources. The campaign is organized into regional arcs selected from an alliance map at Ravensthorpe. Each arc generally introduces a local conflict, a group of characters, and a sequence of missions that advances Eivor’s position in England.
What returning players will notice
Valhalla continues the franchise’s historical-versus-modern-day framework and connects to earlier Assassin’s Creed themes. Those connections add context, but the available official material does not establish that a newcomer needs a series primer. You can begin with Valhalla and understand Eivor’s immediate goals without memorizing previous protagonists or lore.

Instead of one uninterrupted critical path, you repeatedly choose a region from the alliance map and complete its arc. This provides flexibility and lets you vary the setting, but it can also make the narrative feel episodic. Some arcs are more urgent or memorable than others, and the overall campaign asks you to return to Ravensthorpe between major chapters.
World Events and optional stories
Ubisoft Narrative Director Darby McDevitt described the move away from the more traditional side-quest structure used in Origins and Odyssey toward World Events. These are shorter, self-contained encounters discovered while exploring. They may involve helping a stranger, solving an unusual local problem, or witnessing a comic or dramatic scene.
World Events make travel feel less like moving between checklist missions, but they are not all required for the main story. Treat them as optional character moments and discoveries. Ubisoft also emphasizes that combat and conversation decisions affect your path. Choices matter, especially for relationships and particular outcomes, but that does not mean every optional decision radically changes the entire campaign.
McDevitt summarized the design goal in an Ubisoft interview: “I think the goal of any good game is to allow a player to make interesting decisions.” In practice, Valhalla gives you decisions to consider without turning the whole game into a branching narrative where every choice creates a completely different story.

How does combat work?
Combat is more direct and physical than the phrase “Assassin’s Creed” may suggest. Eivor can attack with light and heavy strikes, block or parry with a shield or weapon, dodge, use ranged attacks, and trigger abilities learned from exploration. You can fight with two weapons or combine a weapon and shield, and the game lets you switch between melee, archery, and assassination approaches.
Melee fighting
Light attacks are quick and useful for maintaining pressure. Heavy attacks consume stamina but can stagger enemies, break defenses, or open a finishing opportunity. Blocking reduces incoming damage, while a well-timed parry can interrupt an attack and expose an enemy. Dodging is safer against attacks that cannot be parried or when several opponents surround you.
Enemy animations matter more than simply raising your power level. Red or otherwise highlighted attacks generally require a dodge rather than a standard block. Watching an opponent’s timing, keeping enough stamina for an escape, and avoiding attacks from off-screen enemies are basic habits that remain useful throughout the game.
Weapons, shields, and dual wielding
Different weapon types change reach, speed, and stamina use. A shield provides dependable defense, while dual wielding favors aggression and varied attack patterns. You can experiment rather than search for one universally correct loadout: choose a combination that matches whether you prefer patient parries, fast strikes, or heavy damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBows and ranged attacks
Bows let you soften a group before entering melee and reward precise shots at weak points. A ranged opening is particularly useful against elite enemies or archers positioned on walls. Ammunition is limited by your inventory, so use it deliberately and collect arrows during exploration.
Assassinations and stealth
The Hidden Blade remains available, and many locations include routes for crouching, disguises, elevated approaches, or silent takedowns. However, some enemies resist a one-hit assassination unless you meet the relevant timing or skill requirement, and many encounters can become open fights. Stealth is one tool among several, not the game’s default solution to every objective.
Abilities and skill progression
Abilities are found by exploring and collecting knowledge-related items, while the skill tree improves attributes and unlocks passive or active advantages. Spend points toward the style you actually use. A player who relies on parries and melee damage benefits from a different path than someone who opens every encounter with a bow or assassination.

What is the open world like?
Valhalla’s world is built for extended exploration. England contains settlements, roads, rivers, ruins, underground areas, military locations, and small discoveries that appear away from the main alliance arcs. Norway remains available as another region with its own terrain and activities.
Raids and river travel
Raids are organized assaults in which Eivor calls a crew to help attack a location. They provide supplies and raw materials used to improve Ravensthorpe. You can approach from land or use the longship to travel along rivers and reach targets. Starting a raid before scouting the area can create a difficult fight, so identify entrances, enemy types, and nearby resources first.
Ravensthorpe and settlement progression
Ravensthorpe is more than a visual home base. Buildings unlock services, upgrades, quests, and conveniences. Settlement materials come primarily from exploration and raids, so the open-world loop is interconnected: travel produces resources, resources expand the settlement, and the settlement opens additional options for Eivor.
Do not spend every resource immediately on decorative upgrades if you are short on practical services. Prioritize facilities that support your preferred play style, then add less essential buildings as supplies become available.
Activities and collectibles
Exploration includes mysteries, wealth, artifacts, environmental puzzles, and short World Events. These activities replace the repetitive side-quest chains found in some earlier entries with smaller discoveries distributed across the map. They are worthwhile when you enjoy wandering and experimentation, but trying to clear every icon can make the campaign feel like a second job.
How long and demanding is the game?
There is no precise, independently measured completion-time figure established here. A current PC Gamer roundup describes completing Valhalla as taking a long time, which is reviewer judgment rather than a guaranteed number of hours. Your total will vary substantially depending on whether you follow alliance arcs only, pursue settlement upgrades, explore optional regions, or aim for near-completion.
The scale affects both enjoyment and fatigue. Players who like long-term progression can treat the game as a continuing world to revisit. Players who prefer a compact campaign should expect the regional structure and optional content to test their patience, even if they focus mainly on story objectives.
Which play style suits you?
| What you enjoy | How Valhalla serves it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Viking history and mythic atmosphere | Norwegian and English settings, clan politics, raids, and Norse themes | Historical settings are blended with fantasy elements and franchise science-fiction context. |
| Exploration | Large regions filled with mysteries, wealth, artifacts, ruins, and World Events | Travel and discovery are major parts of progression. |
| Action combat | Melee weapons, shields, bows, abilities, parries, and dual wielding | Open combat is common; stealth is optional rather than dominant. |
| Settlement building | Ravensthorpe buildings and services funded by gathered resources | Raids and exploration feed directly into upgrades. |
| Short, tightly paced storytelling | Regional alliance arcs with optional detours | The broad structure and scale may feel overextended. |
| Classic stealth-first Assassin’s Creed | Hidden Blade assassinations and infiltration routes | You can play quietly in many situations, but the game is designed around multiple approaches. |
Beginner plan: what to do in your first hours
- Learn the core controls in Norway. Practice light and heavy attacks, blocking, parrying, dodging, bow aiming, and crouching before the story sends you into larger battles.
- Follow the early main objectives. The opening missions introduce travel, combat, the settlement, and the move toward England. Avoid trying to collect everything immediately.
- Scout before fighting. Use your raven to identify enemies, wealth, entrances, and high-value targets. This prevents accidental alarms and shows whether a location is better suited to stealth or a raid.
- Choose an initial skill direction. Put early points into the weapons and abilities you actually use. You can refine your build later, so experimentation is safer than copying a single prescribed setup.
- Open the alliance map in Ravensthorpe. Select a region whose recommended power is appropriate for your current character and begin its arc.
- Raid selectively. Raids supply settlement materials, but you do not need to clear every target at once. Bring the crew when you are prepared and withdraw if a location is consuming more resources than it provides.
- Upgrade practical settlement buildings first. Services that improve equipment, healing, or customization generally help more immediately than purely cosmetic additions.
- Take World Events when they are nearby. They are short diversions that add local character without requiring a separate quest chain. Do not backtrack across the entire map for every one.
- Save before major choices. Dialogue decisions can affect relationships and specific outcomes. A manual save lets you reconsider a choice without assuming that every decision will rewrite the whole campaign.
How choices affect the experience
Dialogue options can alter relationships, determine who supports Eivor, and change the resolution of particular situations. Some choices are clearly consequential; others mainly reveal personality or provide a different line of conversation. The game’s structure rewards paying attention to motives and alliances rather than selecting every response for an imagined “correct” ending.
Combat choices also shape your route. You may enter through a guarded gate, climb to a roof, sabotage defenses, assassinate a target, or begin a direct assault. The world is designed to let you change tactics when a plan fails, so a detected stealth attempt does not automatically mean you have played incorrectly.
What are the edition and platform differences?
Ubisoft’s edition-contents article, updated 30 September 2026, lists the following packages. Ubisoft warns that contents can vary by region, so use this table as a guide and verify the exact platform-store listing before purchasing.
| Edition | Listed contents |
|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Base game |
| Deluxe Edition | Base game and Ultimate Pack |
| Ragnarök Edition | Base game and Dawn of Ragnarök |
| Complete Edition | Base game, Dawn of Ragnarök, Ultimate Pack, and Season Pass |
| Collector and Ubisoft+ Premium bundles | Bundle contents vary; check the current regional listing. |
If you only want the main campaign, the Standard Edition is the simplest choice. Choose the Ragnarök or Complete package when you specifically want the listed expansion content. Do not assume that an edition name guarantees identical bonuses in every country.
Ubisoft lists PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna, and PC storefronts including Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Store. Ubisoft+ is also listed as an option. Subscription catalogues and store availability can change, so confirm that your local platform supports the edition you intend to use.

Choose it when these statements sound like you
- You want a substantial Viking adventure rather than a short action game.
- You enjoy exploring for hidden locations, resources, and environmental stories.
- You like improving a character and a home base over many sessions.
- You are comfortable alternating between open combat, archery, and stealth.
- You enjoy making alliance and dialogue decisions even when they affect only part of the story.
Wait for a sale or skip it when these statements fit better
- You want a compact campaign with little optional content.
- You expect every mission to revolve around silent assassination.
- You dislike returning to a hub to manage upgrades and resources.
- You find regional arcs and large maps tiring rather than inviting.
- You primarily want the classic Assassin-versus-Templar storyline and a tightly focused stealth loop.
A lower price can make the game’s scale easier to accept, particularly if you are unsure whether you will complete every region. The recommendation is preference-based: Valhalla’s size is a benefit for one player and a barrier for another.

Ubisoft reported that Valhalla’s day-one player base was more than double that of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. This was Ubisoft’s own launch-period comparison in 2020; it was not a sales figure, a total-player count, or a measure of current active users. The game launched worldwide on 10 November 2020, so present-day buying decisions should focus on edition contents, platform support, and your tolerance for its long-form design rather than launch momentum.

Common beginner problems and fixes
“I am losing fights even though my equipment looks good.”
Check your timing and stamina before replacing gear. Heavy attacks, repeated dodges, and missed parries can leave you unable to respond. Practice against one opponent, use a shield while learning patterns, and avoid entering a high-level area simply because it is visible on the map.
“I cannot find enough settlement materials.”
Look for marked raid locations and wealth, then use the longship to reach river targets. Exploration also reveals resources away from the main road. Upgrade only the buildings you need first instead of distributing materials across every available project.
“Stealth keeps turning into a fight.”
Scout with the raven, identify patrol routes, and approach from above or from a concealed entrance. Some encounters are built for open combat, and a detected attempt is not a failure state. Switch to parries, crowd control, or ranged attacks rather than repeatedly retrying an approach the location does not support.

“The map feels overwhelming.”
Use the alliance map and recommended power as your structure. Complete one regional arc, return to Ravensthorpe for upgrades, and treat nearby World Events as optional. You do not need to clear every icon before moving the story forward.
“I am unsure which edition to purchase.”
Start with the Standard Edition for the base game. Compare the listed expansion and pass contents only if you already want additional story material, and verify the local store because Ubisoft says regional contents can differ.
Final verdict: is it a good first Assassin’s Creed game?
Valhalla is a reasonable first Assassin’s Creed game if your priority is a Viking-flavored open-world RPG. Its opening premise is accessible, its combat supports several approaches, and the settlement and alliance systems give you clear long-term goals. You can learn the franchise context while playing rather than studying the entire series first.
It is a weaker first choice for someone specifically seeking the series’ most concentrated stealth experience or a short introduction to its lore. The game asks for patience with a large map, repeated regional arcs, and a campaign that current review coverage characterizes as long. For the right player, that breadth is the point; for everyone else, waiting for a favorable price—or choosing a more compact game—is sensible.
