No evidence establishes that IPS monitors protect your eyes or are medically safer for vision than other panel types. IPS describes a display technology, not an eye-health feature. An IPS screen may be comfortable to use, but comfort depends more on how you use it and on model-specific features such as brightness adjustment, glare reduction and flicker control.
What IPS does—and what it does not mean for eye health
IPS, or in-plane switching, is a type of LCD panel technology. Manufacturer descriptions focus on display characteristics such as viewing angles and image properties. For example, EIZO describes its FlexScan EV2460 as an LED-backlit IPS LCD with a 178-degree viewing angle; ASUS lists a 178-degree viewing angle for its VY249HG2 IPS monitor. Those specifications describe the displays, not a demonstrated effect on eye health.
The available evidence does not establish that IPS prevents eye damage, reduces eye strain compared with VA or TN panels, or improves vision. A wide viewing angle can make an image easier to see from different positions, but that is not the same as medical protection.

Can an IPS monitor cause eye strain?
Screen discomfort can happen during prolonged use, regardless of whether the display is IPS. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) lists dry eyes, blurred vision, tearing and headaches among possible symptoms of extended device use. These symptoms are generally temporary discomfort, not proof that a particular panel type has damaged the eyes.
#1 Best Overall
- VIVID COLORS: Experience stunning colors across the entire display with the IPS panel. Colors remain bright and clear across the screen, even when you change angles. Tones and shades are represented consistently and beautifully with less color washing.
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects. The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments.¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain a competitive edge with optimizable game settings. Color and image contrast can be instantly adjusted to see scenes more clearly, while Game Mode adjusts any game to fill your screen with every detail in view.
- EASY ON THE EYES: Protect your vision and stay comfortable, even during long sessions. Stay focused on your work with reduced blue light and screen flicker.²
- A MODERN AESTHETIC: Featuring a super-slim design with ultra-thin border bezels, this monitor enhances any setup with a sleek, modern look. Enjoy a lightweight and stylish addition to any environment.
Blue light is not an established explanation for digital eye discomfort. The AAO states: “Digital eye discomfort is not caused by blue light.” Its guidance also says small amounts of blue light from computer screens have not been shown to harm the eyes. That does not mean screen use can never feel uncomfortable; it means the IPS label and blue-light claims should not be treated as evidence of eye protection.
Which monitor features can affect comfort?
Features vary by model, so check the specifications of the particular monitor rather than assuming they come with IPS.

- Brightness and contrast adjustment: Being able to set the screen to a comfortable level can help you avoid an overly bright or hard-to-read image.
- Glare control: An anti-glare coating or a matte screen filter may help when reflections are distracting. A filter is an option for glare, not a treatment for eye problems.
- Flicker control: Some models advertise flicker-free designs or flicker-control features. This is a model-specific claim, not a guarantee inherent to IPS.
- Readable text and screen size: Consider whether text is easy to read from your normal sitting position without leaning toward the screen.
- Stand adjustment: Height and tilt adjustment can make it easier to position the display for a slightly downward gaze.
For illustration, EIZO lists brightness adjustment, a flicker-control design and an anti-glare coating for the FlexScan EV2460. ASUS lists TÜV Rheinland-certified flicker-free and low-blue-light features for the VY249HG2. These are manufacturer claims about named models; they do not show that IPS itself prevents strain or eye disease.
How to set up an IPS monitor more comfortably
The AAO’s “Digital Devices and Your Eyes” guidance, published December 5, 2025, recommends practical adjustments for screen use:
Rank #3
- Incredible Images: The Acer KB272 G0bi 27" monitor with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail.
- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting. A 120Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver smooth 2D motion scenes in gaming and video.
- 27" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Widescreen IPS Monitor | Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible)
- Refresh Rate: Up to 120Hz | Response Time: 1ms VRB | Brightness: 250 nits | Pixel Pitch: 0.311mm
- Take periodic distance breaks. The AAO suggests looking away from the screen regularly. Its 20-20-20 guidance is to look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
- Set a comfortable distance. Sit about 25 inches—or roughly an arm’s length—from the screen, adjusting as needed so text remains easy to read.
- Position the display slightly below eye level. Aim for a posture in which you look slightly downward at the screen.
- Adjust brightness and contrast. Choose settings that make the display comfortable to view in your room rather than leaving it conspicuously bright or dim.
- Reduce reflections. Change the screen’s position or reduce nearby glare. If glare remains a problem, the AAO suggests considering a matte screen filter.
Should you buy blue-light glasses for an IPS screen?
The AAO does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use because evidence of benefit is lacking. Buying such glasses is not a necessary way to make an IPS monitor safer for your eyes. If you have persistent or concerning symptoms, seek advice from an eye-care professional rather than relying on a panel label or screen accessory.

Compare the actual models, not just their panel labels. Look for a useful brightness range and adjustment, glare handling, stated flicker-control features, legible text at your intended viewing distance, and a stand that lets you position the display comfortably. The sources available here do not provide clinical comparisons showing IPS, VA or TN to be better for eye health, so there is no evidence-based eye-health ranking of those panel types.
