Among the Trolls is worth buying now if you want a focused, single-player mystery set in Finnish folklore and are comfortable with a new release whose review sample is still small and mixed. It is not an Early Access game, does not offer multiplayer at launch, and should not be approached as a proven, endlessly expandable survival sandbox. Players who need co-op, a long-established consensus, or a public Early Access roadmap have good reasons to wait.

The premise is deliberately personal. Anna travels from the United States to Finland to visit her grandfather, but his cabin is abandoned when she arrives. Anna’s search for her grandfather is the central thread. You explore Finnish environments, meet characters, and uncover a family mystery while the world introduces mythology-inspired dangers. The setting is not simply a visual theme: the developers describe the story as inspired by Kalevala myths, so folklore is part of the narrative identity and the supernatural encounters are intended to reinforce the plot.

This is a concrete example of construction serving traversal and story progression: gathering materials is not only about keeping a meter full; it can open a route to another part of the mystery.
How the gameplay loop fits together
- Read the situation. Story objectives and environmental obstacles point you toward a location or character. Weather, animals, and limited resources make preparation relevant before you leave a safe area.
- Gather what the environment offers. Resource collection supplies the ingredients for tools, weapons, and construction. Inventory management determines what you can carry and what you must leave behind.

It is less suitable if you want combat variety or construction complexity to be the primary attraction; the available descriptions emphasize atmosphere, exploration, and narrative integration rather than a broad catalog of combat systems.

How much content is in the release?
The game launched as a complete 1.0 narrative experience, but there is no reliable playtime figure established for the launch version. Avoid treating a guessed hour count as a promise. The known scope is better described by its structure: a focused story, curated sections, survival activities, and exploration across a Finnish setting.
What the demo did and did not show
The official demo development log described gathering resources, making tools and weapons, managing inventory and physical needs, meeting characters, and exploring selected story sections. It offered only a taste of the supernatural. The developers said the largest mythological encounters were being held for the fuller game, so the demo should not be used as a complete measure of the finished game’s creature variety or dramatic scale.
What “complete” means here
The developers chose a direct full release because an Early Access launch would have exposed only a “slice” of the story. Their stated goal was a polished, cohesive, complete narrative experience from day one. That commitment describes the intended shape of the launch: the principal story is delivered as a finished arc rather than released chapter by chapter.

It does not mean the game is guaranteed to receive no updates. Any expansion after 1.0 depends on performance and player feedback. There is no promised staged roadmap comparable to an Early Access development schedule, so purchase the current release for the content it contains rather than for hypothetical future additions.
Is Among the Trolls Early Access?
No. Among the Trolls released directly as a full 1.0 title on Steam on October 14, 2026. The developers explicitly changed course from an Early Access plan because they did not want players to experience only part of the story.

- You are buying a finished narrative structure. The main experience is intended to be cohesive at launch instead of dependent on future chapters.
- You should not expect an Early Access-style roadmap. Future expansion is conditional on performance and feedback, and no multiplayer commitment accompanies that statement.
A 1.0 label also does not erase normal launch uncertainty. The game is newly released, the public review sample is small, and future patches may still address issues or tune systems. The relevant question is whether the launch version’s premise and stated systems fit you, not whether it promises years of scheduled feature growth.
Does it have multiplayer or co-op?
No. The launch scope is single-player, and multiplayer is not a launch feature or a stated guarantee. The Steam listing identifies single-player play, with achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing among the listed platform features.

At the time of the available 2026 snapshot, Steam showed 45% positive feedback from 33 user reviews. That is useful as an early warning that reactions are mixed, but it is not a stable long-term consensus. With only 33 reviews, a handful of additional ratings can move the percentage substantially, and launch-day impressions may reflect issues that later updates change.
Awards and what they do—and do not—prove
The official community feed reported 10 NYX Game Awards recognitions in 2026. Gold awards included storytelling, game design, art direction, first-person view, adventure, indie, and survival categories. These recognitions support the game’s presentation, narrative direction, and genre concept. They do not establish a guaranteed playtime, technical performance on every PC, or universal agreement that the survival systems are deep.
How to use the evidence
- Give the awards weight if atmosphere, visual direction, and a story-first concept are your priorities.
- Treat the 45%-positive figure as a reason to check current reviews and patch notes before purchasing, not as a final verdict.
- Do not infer a settled critic consensus or a dependable hour count; neither is established here.

The published minimum configuration requires Windows 10 Home 64-bit, a 10th-generation Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX 5600XT, DirectX 12, and 30 GB of storage. The recommended configuration raises the target to an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, 32 GB of RAM, and an RTX 2080Ti or RX 7700XT. DirectX 12 and 30 GB of storage remain listed, and an SSD is preferred.

These are the published targets, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. If your system is near the minimum, leave room for the operating system and updates beyond the game’s 30 GB listing, install on an SSD when possible, and use the store’s current compatibility information before buying. The recommended tier is notably stronger in both memory and graphics, which matters for a visually atmospheric first-person game even though no performance benchmark is supplied.

For an atmospheric solo adventure, Among the Trolls has a coherent proposition: investigate a missing grandfather in Finland, use survival and crafting systems to prepare for the journey, and uncover a mythology-shaped story through exploration. The bridge-building examples show that construction can unlock routes and narrative progress, while the 1.0 decision means the main story is not being sold as an unfinished slice.
For a multiplayer survival sandbox, the answer is no at launch. For a buyer who wants a large, independently verified content catalog or a mature review consensus, the prudent choice is to wait and watch how the Steam reception develops. For everyone else, the purchase comes down to whether Finnish folklore, first-person atmosphere, and a directed mystery are more valuable than breadth, co-op, or an Early Access roadmap.
