AmneziaVPN can be safe for a specific job: encrypting the connection between your device and a VPN server, and making some VPN traffic harder for censorship systems to identify. It is not an anonymity guarantee, does not clean an infected device, and does not stop websites from tracking an account or browser. Your privacy also depends on whether you run a server yourself or use Amnezia’s Free or Premium service.
What AmneziaVPN actually is
AmneziaVPN is free, open-source client software that supports several VPN protocols. The app is not one single service with one privacy model. It can deploy a VPN on a server you control, or connect to Amnezia-operated Free and Premium services.
Self-hosted AmneziaVPN
With self-hosting, you provide access to a virtual private server (VPS). The app connects to that server over SSH and installs Docker and the required server containers. Your VPN traffic then exits through that VPS rather than through a server operated by Amnezia.

The VPS company can still control the underlying host or network, and anyone who administers the server can become a relevant trust point. You are also responsible for keeping the server, operating system and access credentials secure.

Amnezia Free and Premium
Free and Premium are provider-operated VPN services. Amnezia manages the service infrastructure, so you do not need to buy or administer a VPS. The provider’s published privacy policy, rather than your own server configuration, defines the stated handling of service and connection data.
What the VPN tunnel can protect you from
People watching the same Wi-Fi network
When traffic is routed through an encrypted VPN tunnel, other users on a hotel, airport, school or café network should not be able to read the contents of that traffic in transit to the VPN server. The local network can still see that your device is communicating with a VPN endpoint, and the destination website can still see activity after the traffic leaves the VPN server.
Some visibility for an internet access provider
For traffic that actually uses the tunnel, your access provider normally sees an encrypted connection to the VPN server instead of the individual destinations carried inside it. The VPN server or provider becomes the next important observation point. A VPN therefore changes who you must trust; it does not make network metadata disappear.

Amnezia’s masking-capable protocols alter characteristics that inspection systems can use as fingerprints. This can help when a network identifies ordinary VPN protocols and blocks their server addresses or traffic patterns. The result is better described as harder to detect or block, not invisible. A censor can adapt, block the server itself, or use other signals.

What remains visible
The website or app you use can still associate activity with your account, cookies, login session and browser characteristics. The VPN also does not hide the fact that your device is online, and it cannot prevent a network operator from observing some timing, volume or endpoint metadata.
What AmneziaVPN cannot protect you from
- Malware or spyware already on the device: a VPN encrypts a network path; it does not remove malicious software, repair a compromised operating system or stop an attacker who already controls the endpoint.
- Phishing and malicious downloads: an encrypted tunnel cannot tell whether a convincing login page is fraudulent or whether a downloaded file is dangerous.
- Account-based tracking: signing in lets a website identify you regardless of the IP address supplied by the VPN.
- Browser fingerprinting and cookies: those identification techniques operate at the application layer and are not defeated by VPN encryption.
- Traffic correlation by a determined adversary: an observer who can monitor both sides of a connection may be able to compare timing and volume patterns. A VPN is not a guarantee of anonymity.
- Every censorship technique: masking can raise the difficulty of protocol identification, but it cannot guarantee access to a blocked service or country-specific website.
These are general limits of VPN tunnels, not evidence that AmneziaVPN has tested or defeated each threat. Treat the VPN as one network-privacy control alongside updated software, strong account security, safe browsing and a trustworthy device.
Encryption and traffic masking solve different problems
AmneziaWG
Amnezia’s technical documentation states: “AmneziaWG 3.1 does not change the cryptographic core of WireGuard.” The underlying design retains WireGuard’s Noise_IK handshake, Curve25519 key exchange and AEAD ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption. Those mechanisms protect the payload inside the tunnel.
AmneziaWG adds transport-level changes intended to make the connection less recognizable to deep-packet inspection (DPI). Its Header Protection changes packet headers, sizes, sequences and timing so that service fields used as protocol fingerprints are harder to match. Amnezia explicitly describes this masking as separate from payload encryption. It is not a replacement for cryptography.

XRay Reality
XRay Reality is presented for very restrictive networks. Its design uses TLS-handshake behavior intended to resist active probing, in which a censor tests whether a suspected server is running a particular proxy or VPN protocol. That makes detection more difficult in some environments, but it does not make the connection undetectable or permanently unblockable.
Why the distinction matters
A protocol can have strong encryption and still be easy for a censor to classify from its outer traffic pattern. Conversely, a protocol can disguise its transport while still requiring sound encryption for the contents. When choosing Amnezia protocols, evaluate both properties rather than treating “obfuscated” as a synonym for “anonymous.”
Which protocol should you choose?
Amnezia’s guidance is conditional on the network you are using. In countries with high levels of censorship, its documentation says it does not recommend OpenVPN, WireGuard or IKEv2 without traffic masking because the VPS address may be blocked. It recommends AmneziaWG for difficult networks and identifies XRay Reality for very restrictive cases.

Availability and reliability can vary by device, server and network. If a masked protocol fails, switching servers or transports may help, but continued access is never assured by the protocol name alone.

What Amnezia says it collects
Amnezia’s Privacy and Acceptable Use Policy is effective 7 October 2026. Its statements distinguish VPN activity content from operational and account data. “We do not collect or store information about users’ online activity through the VPN, including browsing history, visited websites, traffic destinations, or the content of VPN traffic,” the policy says. That statement should not be paraphrased as “Amnezia collects no data.”

The policy also says VPN activity is not used for advertising or analytics and describes disclosures under valid Romanian or European Union legal process. These are the provider’s published practices and legal terms; they are not independent verification of every operational system.
The practical distinction is between activity data and connection metadata. The former would describe what you do through the VPN, such as visited sites or traffic contents. The latter can include information needed to run and protect the service, such as an app identifier, software version or the IP address from which you connect.
What the independent security audit found
The Open Technology Fund’s audit summary reports that its Security Lab partner, 7ASecurity, performed a white-box audit of the AmneziaVPN platform over 18 days in December 2024 and January 2025. The scope included client applications, custom protocols, infrastructure, distribution and update supply-chain elements, and threat modeling.

The auditors reported two critical vulnerabilities, one high-risk vulnerability, and additional medium- and low-risk issues. The named critical findings included arbitrary remote code execution triggered by importing a malicious OpenVPN configuration and possible Premium VPN configuration tampering through an exposed Admin API. The high-risk finding involved denial of service through insecure client-to-gateway communication.
The summary says Amnezia fixed the identified vulnerabilities and that auditors retested the fixes. That is meaningful evidence that serious defects were found and remediation was checked. It is not a certification that every version, future release or deployment is vulnerability-free. The work covered the audited code and systems during its stated period, not every later build.
Because one historical issue involved configuration import, use configuration files only from a source you trust. Keep the app current so you receive security fixes, and do not treat a successful retest as a reason to postpone updates.
How to use AmneziaVPN more safely
- Choose the operating model deliberately. Select self-hosting if you are prepared to secure and maintain a VPS. Select Free or Premium if you prefer a provider-operated service and accept its stated data-handling model.
- Obtain the app from Amnezia’s current official distribution channel. Avoid modified installers and configuration bundles from unknown uploaders.
- For self-hosting, secure the server before relying on it. Use a unique administrative credential or key, restrict unnecessary access, apply operating-system updates and monitor the VPS account. The VPN cannot compensate for an exposed server.
- Match the protocol to the network. In an ordinary network, an unmasked protocol may be sufficient. Where VPN traffic is classified or blocked, try AmneziaWG. On very restrictive networks, evaluate the XRay Reality option described by Amnezia’s documentation.
- Import only trusted configurations. A VPN profile can contain settings that affect where traffic goes and, historically, configuration import was an audited attack surface. Treat a profile like executable security-sensitive input.
- Keep both client and server components updated. The audit’s retest applies to the fixes that were checked, not to vulnerabilities that might be discovered later.
- Separate VPN privacy from endpoint security. Use device updates, malware protection, phishing-resistant account security and careful browser practices. The encrypted tunnel is only one layer.
- Reassess your trust boundary. With self-hosting, responsibility shifts toward you and the VPS administrator. With Free or Premium, Amnezia operates the service and processes the categories described in its policy.

So, is AmneziaVPN safe?
It is a reasonable safety tool when your expectation is narrow and accurate: protect traffic on an untrusted network, reduce some access-provider visibility and make selected VPN connections harder for DPI systems to classify. Its open-source client, documented protocol options and independently reported remediation work are positive signals.
Safety is conditional on the deployment. Self-hosting means securing a VPS and trusting its hosting environment. Free and Premium mean accepting the operational data categories and retention qualifications in the 7 October 2026 policy. Neither model prevents malware, phishing, account tracking or every form of censorship. Use the current software, select masking only when your network requires it, and regard the VPN as one layer of a broader security setup.
