Amazon stock may look like a bargain under some valuation assumptions, but the evidence does not make it an obvious one. Amazon is growing quickly, especially in cloud computing, while heavy investment has sharply reduced its reported free cash flow. A Morningstar estimate published on July 23, 2026, called the shares moderately undervalued against its own $280-per-share fair-value estimate; that is one dated model, not a guarantee or a current consensus.
What does “bargain” mean for Amazon stock?
A stock is a bargain only if its market price is below a reasonable estimate of the business’s future value. A low share price by itself says little: the question is what investors are paying relative to future earnings and cash generation, and how much uncertainty they accept.
For Amazon, that judgment depends on several moving parts: the growth and profitability of AWS and the retail business, the cost and payoff of continued investment, and the assumptions built into any fair-value model. An estimate can change as the share price, business outlook, interest rates, and other assumptions change.

In an article published July 23, 2026, Morningstar said it considered Amazon moderately undervalued relative to its $280-per-share long-term fair-value estimate. Morningstar also cited a negative 1% free-cash-flow yield and said AWS capacity expansion was constraining cash flow. These are Morningstar’s model-based assessment and figure from that date, not a current price target, a consensus estimate, or independently established intrinsic value. #1 Best Overall
The negative free-cash-flow yield is an important counterweight to the undervaluation call: it signals that, on the measure Morningstar cited, the business was not then producing positive free cash flow relative to its market value. The estimate and yield should be revisited against current results and the share price rather than treated as a standing verdict.
How strong is Amazon’s underlying business?
Amazon reported $716.9 billion in consolidated net sales for fiscal 2025, a 12% increase from 2024. Net income was $77.7 billion and operating income was $80.0 billion. AWS, its cloud-computing segment, generated $128.7 billion in sales, up 20%, and $45.6 billion in operating income. North America generated $426.3 billion in sales and $29.6 billion in operating income. Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K reports these results.
Rank #2
The segment figures help explain why sales growth alone does not settle the valuation question. AWS accounted for a substantial share of reported operating income despite having much lower sales than North America. Its growth and profitability can materially influence expectations for Amazon’s overall earnings, but they do not eliminate the cost of expanding its capacity.
A more recent growth update
In its second-quarter 2026 filing, Amazon reported year-over-year consolidated net sales growth of 20% and AWS sales growth of 37%. Those are reported growth rates for that quarter, not evidence that the same pace will continue or that the stock is undervalued. Amazon’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q provides the quarterly results.

Why does cash flow complicate the bargain case?
Amazon reported free cash flow of $11.2 billion for fiscal 2025, down from $38.2 billion in fiscal 2024. Over the same period, net purchases of property and equipment rose to $128.3 billion from $77.7 billion. The company’s filings link the pressure on cash flow to investment, including infrastructure expansion.
Amazon defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less net purchases of property and equipment. It cautions that this non-GAAP measure has limitations and should be considered alongside the full cash-flow statement, not as a substitute for it. In practical terms, falling free cash flow could reflect investment intended to support future growth, but investors still need to judge whether the eventual returns will justify the spending. Amazon says its financial focus is on “long-term, sustainable growth in free cash flow.” The 2025 Form 10-K contains the definition and caveat.

- Refresh the valuation. Compare the current share price with a clearly identified, recently dated estimate, and examine what growth, margins, and discount-rate assumptions underpin that estimate.
- Separate sales from profit. Track segment operating income as well as sales growth; AWS’s contribution is significant, but its future results and capacity costs matter.
- Test the cash-flow outlook. Consider how much investment is required, what returns it may produce, and whether free cash flow improves as expansion progresses. Read the cash-flow statement as well as Amazon’s non-GAAP measure.
- Do not extrapolate one quarter. Q2 2026’s faster growth is useful context, but one period does not establish a durable trend.
- Read current risk disclosures. Amazon warns that its listed risks are not exhaustive and that risks could materially adversely affect its business, prospects, financial condition, operating results, cash flows, liquidity, and stock price. Its 2025 filing says operations could also be affected by factors or uncertainties not currently known or considered significant.
Amazon’s growth and AWS profitability support a plausible valuation case, while the fall in free cash flow and scale of capital spending make the payoff from investment central. Whether the shares are a bargain depends on the current price and on assumptions an investor considers credible—not on Morningstar’s July 2026 estimate alone.
