AltspaceVR was free to play on Steam when it was available. Steam classified it as a free-to-play title, so there was no upfront game price. That answer is historical, however: the Steam listing has been retired, the package is marked unavailable, and Microsoft shut down the AltspaceVR service. You cannot buy, download, or play it through Steam today.
The practical current cost is therefore $0 to purchase because no purchase is offered—not because an active free version remains online.
Quick answer: price and availability are different questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Was AltspaceVR free on Steam? | Yes. Steam support metadata identified it as “Free To Play.” |
| Was there an upfront game price? | No. The historical Steam listing did not require a purchase price to obtain the game. |
| Can you download it from Steam now? | No. SteamDB records the application as retired and no longer available on the Steam store. |
| Can you play it now? | No. Microsoft shut down the AltspaceVR service, so the online experience is no longer operating. |
| What does it cost today? | There is no current purchase or playable service. “$0” describes the absence of a sale, not an active free-to-play offering. |
This distinction matters because a free-to-play label describes the price model at the time of listing. It does not guarantee that a game will remain downloadable or that its servers will stay online indefinitely.

Steam’s support metadata listed AltspaceVR as “Free To Play,” alongside a March 31, 2016 release date and SteamVR support. In Steam’s terminology, a free-to-play game can be downloaded without buying the base game. Steam’s general free-to-play policy also says that these titles are available without a subscription or credit card requirement for the download and play process.

That policy explains the historical entry price, but it does not establish every possible in-game transaction. Steam allows optional purchases in some free-to-play games. The available listing information does not establish a specific AltspaceVR subscription, item shop, or other paid feature, so those should not be inferred from the label alone. The safe conclusion is narrower: the base Steam download had no upfront price.
“Free” also did not mean that a computer, a compatible headset, or an internet connection cost nothing. SteamVR support indicated that the software was designed for virtual-reality use, but hardware and connectivity were separate requirements. The listing’s price classification concerned the software itself.
Historical Steam listing details
Release and platform classification
The Steam record identified AltspaceVR as a massively multiplayer simulation with SteamVR support. Its recorded release date was March 31, 2016. These details place the free-to-play classification in the period when AltspaceVR was an active service, not in the present.
What the listing did not promise
A free-to-play listing did not promise permanent access, continued updates, or an indefinitely available store page. Those are service-lifecycle questions. A title can be free when published and later be delisted, retired, or closed. AltspaceVR followed that pattern: its historical price remained free, while its current availability changed to unavailable.

Why AltspaceVR is unavailable now
Steam retirement
SteamDB’s current application record describes AltspaceVR as retired and says it is no longer available on the Steam store. The associated package metadata lists its billing type as “Free on Demand” and its status as “Unavailable.” Together, those fields mean that the old no-price model is preserved as historical metadata, but Steam is not offering a working acquisition path now.
Service shutdown
Microsoft announced that AltspaceVR would shut down on March 10, 2023. The announcement said resources would be redirected toward Microsoft Mesh, including its use for workplace connection and collaboration. TechCrunch reproduced the following statement from Microsoft:
“We look forward to what is to come, including our launch of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connection and collaboration, starting by enabling workplaces around the world.”

A store delisting alone would prevent a new download, but the service shutdown is the reason an old copy cannot provide the original online experience. AltspaceVR depended on a live service; once that service ended, installing the historical client could not restore the public world, accounts, or multiplayer operation.

What “cost” means in each situation
| Situation | Price question | Practical result |
|---|---|---|
| When the Steam listing was active | No upfront game price; Steam classified it as free to play. | Users could obtain the base software without buying it. |
| After the listing was retired | No sale price is offered. | New users cannot obtain the application through the Steam store. |
| After the service shutdown | No playable access is available at any price. | Paying for a key or searching for a hidden subscription cannot bring the service back. |
For that reason, calling AltspaceVR “free today” is misleading. An active free game gives you a download and a running service at no base-game charge. AltspaceVR instead has no current transaction and no operating service.
Can you still download AltspaceVR from Steam?
No. The current SteamDB record says the app is no longer available on the Steam store, and the package status is “Unavailable.” If you search the Steam store for the title and do not receive a normal purchase or installation option, that is consistent with the recorded retirement rather than a temporary price change.
Checking your own Steam account
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Search your library for “AltspaceVR.” A title may appear only if it was previously associated with your account or remains in a local library record.
- If the entry is absent, the retired store listing cannot be used to add it as a new game.
- If an old entry or local files appear, do not interpret that as proof that the service is operating. The service shutdown prevents the original online product from being played.
Steam client labels and library behavior can vary by version, but no client setting can override a store retirement or bring a closed service online.

What if you installed it years ago?
An old installation is not equivalent to current access. A local copy can preserve files on a computer, while the application’s online worlds and account systems require the service that Microsoft ended. Because AltspaceVR is no longer a running service, reinstalling old files, verifying them, or moving them to another computer cannot recreate the original platform.

You should also be cautious with unofficial installers or downloads that claim to provide a “working” version. The verified status is that the official Steam listing is unavailable and the service has shut down. A third-party file may be altered, unsafe, or unable to connect to anything, and it does not represent an official way to play AltspaceVR.
How to interpret the Steam and SteamDB labels
“Free To Play”
This is the historical pricing category shown in Steam support metadata. It answers whether the base title required an upfront purchase while listed. It does not answer whether the listing remains active.
“Free on Demand”
This package field, recorded by SteamDB, describes how the package was delivered when it was available: users could request it without a purchase charge. It should be read together with the package’s current “Unavailable” status.
“Retired” and “no longer available”
These SteamDB terms describe the present store state. They are availability indicators, not a new price tier. A retired free game is not the same thing as a currently downloadable free game.

Common misunderstandings about the price
“I see a $0 price, so I should be able to install it.”
Not necessarily. A zero price can describe historical metadata or a package that has no charge when requested. The current availability flag takes precedence for access: AltspaceVR is recorded as unavailable.
“If I buy a used code, will that restore access?”
No verified current purchase path exists, and a code cannot restart a service that has been shut down. Treat claims of redeemable official access with skepticism.
“Did free-to-play mean there were no optional purchases?”
Not automatically. Steam’s policy allows optional purchases in supported free-to-play games, but the available AltspaceVR records do not establish a particular paid feature. The documented fact is the absence of an upfront base-game price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Is the shutdown just a Steam problem?”
No. Steam retirement explains why the store download is unavailable; Microsoft’s service shutdown explains why the original online product cannot be played even by someone who retained old files.
If you are looking for a replacement social-VR experience
Any replacement should be evaluated as a current service rather than by copying AltspaceVR’s old price label. Check these points before installing another platform:
- Availability today: Confirm that the service has an active store listing, supported servers, and a current support page.
- Headset and platform support: Match the software’s supported headset, operating system, and input requirements to your equipment.
- Upfront price: Separate a free download from a paid base application.
- Optional purchases: Check whether subscriptions, virtual goods, event fees, or other transactions are present.
- Audience: Determine whether the product is aimed at general consumer social use, workplace collaboration, or both.
- Service continuity: Read the provider’s account, moderation, and shutdown policies so you understand what happens if the service changes.
Those checks prevent the same mistake as treating AltspaceVR’s historical “Free To Play” label as proof of present access.
AltspaceVR availability timeline
| Date or status | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| March 31, 2016 | AltspaceVR’s recorded Steam release date; the title was listed as free to play with SteamVR support. |
| While the listing was active | The base software could be obtained without an upfront game price. |
| March 10, 2023 | Microsoft’s announced shutdown date for the AltspaceVR service. |
| Current SteamDB status | The application is retired, no longer on the Steam store, and its package is marked unavailable. |
Bottom line
AltspaceVR was historically free to play on Steam, with no upfront price for the base game. It is not a free game you can start today: the Steam listing is retired, the package is unavailable, and Microsoft ended the service. The only accurate current cost answer is that there is no purchase to make and no official playable access to buy.
