Not yet—but the case for a major shift is stronger than it was. In Neural Networks Are Already Clean, Nick Cammarata argues that many neurons long treated as hopelessly polysemantic become understandable when examined with better visualizations, larger models and automated analysis. His reading challenges the idea that tangled internal representations are an unavoidable barrier.
The essay is a significant, testable challenge to the field’s standard story, not a confirmed breakthrough. The headline result is preliminary, the technical companion paper has not been released, and the strongest model-level claims still await independent replication.
What Cammarata’s essay is claiming
Cammarata, an interpretability researcher at Goodfire, revisits examples that helped establish the modern case for superposition: a model representing more concepts than it has individual neurons, with each neuron responding to several seemingly unrelated features. That behavior is often described as polysemanticity.

They may be ordinary, structured generalization that becomes visible only when the analyst uses enough data, context and automation. If that interpretation holds broadly, direct neuron analysis could be more useful than the field’s current assumption that a second model must first decompose the original model’s activations.

The InceptionV1 cat-and-car neuron
One classic InceptionV1 example appears to respond to cats and cars, which looks like two unrelated concepts sharing one unit. Cammarata reads the neuron instead as a detector for a shared V-shaped visual pattern. The cat and car responses would then be different instances of one visual feature, rather than evidence that the neuron stores two arbitrary ideas.
The “Zoom In” circuit
In another example, the apparent mixture changes with viewing direction. Cammarata says this is normal generalization tied to how an object is seen, not proof that unrelated concepts were packed together without structure. The distinction matters: a neuron can have several outputs while preserving a coherent rule that explains them.
Recursive generalization in language
He calls a language-model pattern “recursive generalization.” A neuron associated with “iy” later responds to “diy” and then to the phrase “do it yourself.” The successive branches, in his account, retain information about how the model extends a pattern. That is different from a collection of unrelated features sharing a limited representational slot.

What the Qwen3-32B numbers actually show
Cammarata’s preliminary accounting for Qwen3-32B classifies the model’s neuron poles—the unit used in his analysis—as follows:

The often-repeated “97% understandable” figure is simply the first two categories combined. It should not be compared directly with the roughly 1.7% figure from an automated interpretability project in 2023. The studies use different models, units of analysis, tools and criteria, so the percentages do not measure the same thing on a common scale.
Goodfire has said that similar results appear in models up to trillions of parameters. In the cited coverage, that remains the company’s own claim rather than a result independently checked by another laboratory.

Why the interpretation is controversial
Nanda: useful for debugging, not a change to the big picture
Neel Nanda describes the work as interesting and potentially valuable for practical attribution graphs—for example, tracing why a model produced a suspicious answer. He still expects substantial errors and omissions, considers superposition real in important senses, and warns that results from small vision examples do not automatically transfer to language models.
His summary is blunt: “This is interesting work, but I don’t think it’s a significant update to the big picture of interpretability.” In that view, better tools may make some neurons easier to label without making comprehensive reverse engineering close.
Roon: a potentially historic result
Roon, an OpenAI employee and Cammarata’s friend, called the result potentially “a major moment in scientific history,” while also saying that others must confirm it. The contrast captures the current evidence gap: the social response is much more enthusiastic than the independently established result.

Cammarata’s stronger forecast
Cammarata argues that “the simple thing, at absurd scale, works” and writes, “I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving.” Those are forecasts about what increasingly capable automated analysis may achieve, not demonstrations that the forecast has already come true.
Breakthrough or better tooling? Five tests that separate the two
- Independent repetition. Another group should apply the published criterion to Qwen3-32B and report how many poles fall into each category.
- Released methods. The companion technical paper needs to specify the visualization pipeline, automated agents, sampling procedure, definitions and treatment of ambiguous cases.
- Cross-model transfer. The same approach should be tested on language models with different architectures and training mixtures, not only on the examples selected by the authors.
- Adversarial evaluation. Analysts should measure false explanations, missed features and disagreements between independent annotators, including cases designed to fool the automated system.
- Operational demonstrations. A method should show that its explanations improve a real task—such as locating the cause of a harmful output—without introducing an unmeasured failure mode.
Until those tests are available, the most defensible description is a promising reinterpretation of several hard cases, not evidence that the general problem of interpretability has been solved.

What would change for AI safety and model debugging?
If the interpretation survives replication, direct neuron analysis could reduce reliance on sparse autoencoders and other second-model decompositions for at least some investigations. Engineers might inspect attribution graphs in a frontier model more directly, identify the internal path behind a sketchy response, and search for mechanisms associated with deceptive or dangerous behavior.

Those are prospective uses. The cited accounts report no production deployment, validated safety result, or demonstration that the method reliably detects deception or prevents harmful behavior. An interpretable label is not automatically a causal explanation, and a causal explanation is not automatically a control mechanism.
What remains unknown
The technical companion paper to the essay has not been released in the available record. No independent laboratory has repeated the Qwen3-32B neuron-pole count using the same criterion, and there is no deployment evidence showing reliable detection of deception or prevention of harmful behavior.
Those omissions are decisive because the argument depends on measurement choices as much as on striking examples. A high percentage can reflect a genuinely cleaner representation, a permissive definition of “related,” a powerful but opaque annotator, or a combination of all three. Publication of the methods and independent reanalysis will show which explanation survives.
How to read the 2023-to-2026 comparison

The apparent jump from 1.7% to 97% therefore measures a change in model, analysis unit and method as well as any change in the underlying networks. Treating it as a single progress meter would overstate what the numbers say.
What readers should watch next
- The release of the companion paper with enough detail to reproduce the classifications.
- Independent counts on Qwen3-32B using the same definitions and a disclosed error analysis.
- Results on language models and architectures beyond the examples used in the essay.
- Evidence that explanations predict or change model behavior, rather than merely producing persuasive descriptions.
Cammarata’s essay has made the field’s assumptions newly testable: perhaps many “tangled” neurons were misread because analysts lacked scale and suitable tools. Whether that becomes a breakthrough will be decided by reproducibility, transfer across models and demonstrated operational value—not by the headline percentage alone.
