AetherTune is an open-source Rust app for browsing and streaming internet radio from a terminal. Its documented features include station search, genre browsing, favorites, listening history, stream information and an audio visualizer. It is best suited to people comfortable with a text interface; installation and real-time visualization depend on the operating system and its audio-capture setup.

What AetherTune does

The AetherTune maintainers describe it as “a terminal-based internet radio player with real-time audio visualization, built in Rust.” The project says it gets stations through the RadioBrowser API, rather than presenting a conventional desktop radio interface. Its README is the basis for the capabilities described here; no independent installation, playback or performance testing is available for this review.

Finding and playing stations

The app documents station search by name and browsing by genre. Results are described as popularity-sorted, with broken streams and spam filtered. An optional two-letter country setting can blend local stations into results. These are project descriptions, not an independent check of station listings, availability or stream reliability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented default controls include / to search, [ and ] to move between genres, Enter to play, f to favorite, and q to quit. The README says keybindings can be remapped.

Keeping track of listening

AetherTune documents favorites and listening history saved in JSON, plus a rolling log of song changes based on ICY stream metadata. A stream-health panel is listed with bitrate, buffer, codec and connection-uptime information. These features may help users keep track of stations and inspect a stream, but the project documentation does not establish how consistently metadata or health details are available across stations.

Appearance and visualization

The README lists built-in color themes and configurable controls, as well as a performance profiler. It describes a 16-band spectrum analyzer and an approximate update rate of 94 updates per second; those are maintainer-stated implementation details, not independently measured results.

Does the visualizer work on every operating system?

No. The documented real-time visualization path varies by operating system and requires audio capture support. If capture is unavailable, the project says the visualizer can use simulation instead. Radio playback and browsing are separate from real-time visualization, so a simulated visualizer does not by itself mean radio playback is unavailable.

Platform Documented visualization requirement or behavior
Linux Real-time visualization needs PulseAudio/PipeWire-related capture support, such as parec or pipewire-pulse. Without capture support, the visualizer falls back to simulation.
Windows The project documents WASAPI loopback for visualization.
macOS Real-time capture requires macOS 14.4 or later and a one-time permission prompt. Older macOS versions use a simulated visualizer.

These requirements and fallback behaviors come from the project README; they have not been verified here on individual systems.

Installation options and prerequisites

The repository documents installation routes for Arch Linux through the AUR, Ubuntu Noble 24.04 through a PPA, Homebrew on Linux and macOS, prebuilt Linux and macOS archives, Windows ZIP files, Nix flakes, and Cargo or source installation. Package and release availability can change, so check the official AetherTune repository for the current instructions and release assets before choosing a route.

The README says mpv is required for several installation methods. Audio-capture dependencies are relevant to real-time visualization rather than the basic idea of browsing radio. On Windows, the project recommends Windows Terminal because legacy cmd.exe has limited support for the keyboard input and ANSI rendering expected by terminal applications; it is a user-experience recommendation, not a stated installation blocker.

Can AetherTune play music from a personal server?

The README also describes optional Subsonic-compatible server support. In that separate mode, users can connect to their own compatible music server to browse artists, albums and playlists, search the library, and play songs. The project names Navidrome, Gonic and Airsonic as examples. This personal-library feature is distinct from discovering public radio stations through RadioBrowser.

Who is AetherTune for?

AetherTune is a plausible fit if you already use a terminal, want radio discovery and playback in that environment, and value keyboard-driven controls or station history. It may also suit someone who wants one interface for public radio and a compatible personal music server.

It is less suitable if you expect a conventional graphical radio app or require a real-time visualizer on a system without the documented capture support. The available evidence is the maintainers’ documentation, not hands-on testing, so installation smoothness, stream reliability and day-to-day usability remain unverified.
