A2A can be deployed securely, but using the protocol does not by itself make an agent deployment secure. Its specification defines transport, authentication, input-validation and related security guidance; operators still have to configure those controls and decide what authenticated callers are allowed to do. A secure result depends on the full deployment: clients, servers, Agent Card discovery, files, webhooks and operational safeguards.
This is a protocol-level assessment, not a certification of any particular A2A client or server. The guidance below reflects the current A2A specification and official supporting material accessed October 13, 2026. Check the exact specification version and binding your deployment uses, because guidance can change.
What does “A2A is secure” actually mean?
A2A describes how agents communicate; it does not automatically secure the code, infrastructure or policies around that communication. Its security guidance establishes expectations and recommendations, including encrypted production transport, request authentication and rigorous input validation. It also assigns important decisions—especially authorization—to the implementation.

That distinction matters. A system can use a supported authentication scheme and still expose data or actions to the wrong caller if its authorization rules are too broad. It can require HTTPS and still be vulnerable if a client skips certificate checks, or if a server accepts unsafe file references or webhook destinations. Protocol conformance is useful, but it is not proof that a specific deployment is safe.

The practical question is therefore not simply whether A2A is secure. Ask whether every boundary in your deployment enforces the control it needs: who can connect, what they can do, what information they can discover, what inputs the service processes, and where it sends callbacks.
How should A2A connections be protected?
For production, A2A requires encrypted communication: HTTPS for HTTP-based bindings and TLS for gRPC. The current specification recommends modern TLS configurations and recommends TLS 1.3 or newer. Clients should validate the server certificate against trusted certificate authorities rather than disabling verification to make a connection succeed. The specification also states, “Credentials SHOULD be transmitted only over encrypted connections.” See the official security guidance.
Encryption protects data in transit from being read or altered by parties between the endpoints; it does not decide whether a caller is entitled to make a request. Treat transport security and access control as separate layers. Both endpoints need to use the appropriate encrypted binding, and the client needs to verify it is talking to the intended server.
Deployment checks
- Use HTTPS for HTTP-based communication or TLS for gRPC in production.
- Keep TLS configuration current; the specification recommends TLS 1.3 or newer.
- Ensure clients reject invalid or untrusted server certificates. Do not disable certificate validation as a routine workaround.
- Check the actual deployment path, including any network termination points, rather than assuming that a protocol setting alone guarantees encrypted communication end to end.
What authentication does A2A provide?
A2A uses HTTP-layer identity and credentials, separate from identity information in the JSON-RPC payload. Authentication requirements are declared through the Agent Card. A client obtains credentials out of band and sends them using the appropriate HTTP mechanism; the server must authenticate every incoming request. The protocol definitions enumerate several scheme types, but the choice depends on the identity system and trust model of the deployment.

| Scheme type | What the protocol material establishes | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| API key | Listed as a supported authentication scheme type in the protocol definitions. | Decide how keys are issued, protected, scoped, replaced and revoked in your environment. |
| HTTP authentication | Listed as a supported scheme type; credentials are carried at the HTTP layer. | Choose the applicable HTTP authentication approach and define how the server validates caller identity. |
| OAuth 2.0 | Listed as a supported scheme type; the server can use applicable OAuth scopes in authorization policy. | Decide which scopes represent the permissions needed for each request and how credentials are obtained. |
| OpenID Connect | Listed as a supported authentication scheme type. | Choose how the deployment establishes identity and how that identity maps to local permissions. |
| Mutual TLS | Listed as a supported scheme type. | Decide how client identity is provisioned and checked, and how it maps to the server’s access policy. |
The protocol names these options; it does not establish that one scheme is best for every deployment. Select based on the identities you need to recognize, the authorization policy you can enforce, and how credentials are obtained and managed. Credentials should come from an appropriate out-of-band process, not from a public card or message body. The protocol material does not set a universal credential-lifecycle procedure, so define ownership, replacement and revocation for the mechanism you select.
Why authentication is not enough
Authentication answers “who is making this request?” Authorization answers “what may that identity do here?” A2A leaves authorization logic to the server and its local policy. The server should assess the caller and the requested work rather than treating successful authentication as blanket permission.
Relevant policy inputs can include the requested skill, the attempted action, data-access rules and applicable OAuth scopes. Apply least privilege: permit only the access needed for the particular request. For example, recognizing a caller does not by itself justify granting access to every skill or data source available to the agent. The precise mapping from identity to actions is implementation-specific; the specification does not prescribe one universal policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake authorization an explicit server-side decision for each protected operation. Document which identities may invoke which capabilities and access which data, then verify that the server enforces those boundaries. A card’s description of capabilities helps a client understand what an agent offers; it should not be mistaken for an authorization grant.

Can Agent Card discovery expose sensitive information?
Yes. Agent Cards describe an agent’s identity, capabilities, skills, endpoint and authentication requirements, and may contain sensitive information. A publicly reachable discovery endpoint can therefore reveal operational details even if the endpoint itself does not expose a protected task.
Review the card as information you are publishing, not as a place to store secrets. The official Agent Discovery guidance recommends access controls for sensitive cards, consideration of authenticated extended cards, and avoiding plaintext static secrets in cards. If a detail would be sensitive when disclosed to an unauthenticated visitor, restrict access to the card or omit that detail. Keep credentials out of message content as well whenever possible.
How should agents handle messages, artifacts and files?
All request content and file references should be treated as untrusted, including content that appears to come from another agent. The specification says, “Agents MUST validate all input parameters before processing.” It also calls for validating the content and structure of message and artifact parts. Validation should happen at the receiving boundary, before content is used in an operation or passed to another component.
Validation is broader than checking whether a request parses. Confirm that parameters have the expected structure and acceptable values; check message and artifact parts for valid content and types; and enforce limits on message size, file size and request complexity. The official specification connects these measures to reducing injection, processing and resource-exhaustion risks.

File references and content types
Do not assume a referenced file is safe because it was supplied through an A2A message. Validate both the reference and the content type, and apply controls to the content you actually process. File references can also create server-side request forgery (SSRF) exposure if a server fetches destinations that an attacker can influence. Validate destinations and restrict what the implementation will retrieve, rather than blindly following a reference.
Set limits appropriate to the work your service performs. The specification recommends size and complexity limits but does not prescribe universal numeric thresholds. Choose values based on your application and processing capacity; a limit that is not enforced at the server boundary does not protect that boundary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes push notifications and webhooks risky?
A2A push notifications involve the server making an HTTP request to a webhook supplied by the client. That direction of traffic creates two distinct questions: where the server is allowed to connect, and how each side knows who sent or received a notification.
- Validate the destination. Check webhook URLs to reduce SSRF risk before the server sends a callback. Do not treat a client-provided destination as automatically trustworthy.
- Authenticate delivery. The receiving webhook should be able to establish that a notification came from the legitimate A2A server, rather than accepting any request that resembles a callback.
- Validate receipt. The receiver should check that the notification is relevant to its task or relationship with that server. A message reaching the endpoint is not, by itself, proof that it should be acted on.
These controls are complementary: destination validation protects the sending server, while authentication and relevance checks protect the receiver and the actions it takes. The A2A security considerations identify webhook destination validation and notification authentication as implementation concerns.

Which operational controls belong around the protocol?
Even valid, authenticated requests can consume excessive resources or expose more information than necessary. The specification’s implementation guidance includes rate limits, concurrency and resource limits, minimizing sensitive data transfer, protecting logs and monitoring for suspicious activity. These are deployment safeguards, not evidence that a particular A2A service already enforces them.
Capacity and abuse controls
Set request-rate, concurrency and resource controls at the service boundary so that one caller or a burst of work cannot consume the capacity needed by other requests. Input-size and complexity limits complement these controls: rates limit how often work arrives, while size and complexity limits constrain how expensive an individual request can be. Monitor for suspicious patterns and define how operators will investigate them.
Privacy and logs
Minimize sensitive data sent between agents to what the task requires, and protect logs that may record request or operational details. Decide what is retained and who can access it under your own privacy and security requirements. The A2A guidance supports data minimization and log protection; it does not prescribe a universal retention period.
How to assess an A2A deployment before release
Use a review that follows the request through its actual path. The goal is to establish what controls are enforced in the implementation, not merely what the card or documentation says should happen.
- Identify the deployed protocol version and binding. Compare the system with the exact A2A specification version and transport binding in use. The current specification is version-sensitive guidance, not a substitute for checking the deployment’s own configuration.
- Trace transport and identity. Confirm production traffic uses the encrypted transport required for the binding and that clients validate server certificates. Check that every incoming request is authenticated through the HTTP-layer mechanism declared for the service.
- Test authorization boundaries. For each identity, capability and data class, establish what is permitted and verify that the server denies requests outside that policy. Include requested skills, attempted actions, data-access rules and applicable scopes in the review.
- Review discovery exposure. Inspect the Agent Card as an unauthenticated party would see it, then decide whether sensitive details need access controls or an authenticated extended card. Remove static secrets rather than publishing them in plaintext.
- Exercise input and file handling. Check how the server handles malformed parameters, unexpected message or artifact structure, unsupported content types, oversized inputs and untrusted file references. Verify that size and complexity limits are enforced before expensive processing.
- Follow the webhook path in both directions. Verify destination validation before a callback and authentication plus relevance checks when a notification arrives at the receiver.
- Review runtime safeguards. Confirm rate, concurrency and resource controls; inspect sensitive-data handling in transit and in logs; and establish monitoring for suspicious activity.
Official materials also include A2A tutorials, including a Keycloak bearer-token security tutorial. Such examples can help with a particular implementation path, but following a tutorial does not establish that the surrounding deployment has appropriate authorization, discovery, input, webhook or operational controls.
