Yes—if the exact console passes a hands-on test, the seller lets you inspect it, and the price makes sense after accounting for missing accessories and weaker warranty or return protection. “Used” covers everything from a well-cared-for console with a return window to an untested private-sale unit, so judge the specific console and deal rather than the label. If a seller will not let you test it or provide credible evidence that it works, treat that as a meaningful risk—not a bargain you can verify later.

When is a used console worth buying?

A used Xbox or PlayStation can be a good fit when you can confirm its model and configuration, test the functions you will rely on, and accept the seller’s return and warranty terms. For a private sale, assume you may have little practical recourse if a fault appears after handover. Sony’s US PlayStation buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by its warranty; it says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. Those terms make the seller and the written protection part of the value, not an afterthought.

A certified-refurbished console may cost more than a private-sale unit, but the comparison is not simply “used versus new.” Compare the final delivered price, what is included, and the documented warranty and return terms. Microsoft’s store has refurbished Xbox Series X and Series S listings describing warranty and support; stock and exact terms can change, so check the current listing rather than assuming a particular offer is available.

  • Consider the used console if you can test it, the seller’s terms are clear, and the total cost remains attractive after any missing accessories or needed replacements.
  • Consider certified refurbished if documented support and a defined warranty are worth more to you than the lowest possible purchase price.
  • Walk away if the seller refuses a reasonable test, the console cannot access the service you need, or a key feature such as the disc drive fails.

There is no universal price threshold that makes a used console worthwhile: generation, model, disc configuration, condition, accessories, shipping, and protections all affect the comparison. Get the actual totals for the options available to you.

Compare the deal, not just the console

Before deciding, write down the configuration you need and compare each candidate against it. A lower listing price can be misleading if the model lacks a feature you need or the controller, cables, or other expected items are missing.

What to compare Private-sale used console Certified-refurbished console
Model and configuration Verify the exact model, storage configuration, and whether it has a disc drive. Check that the included accessories suit your needs. Verify the exact model and included items on the current listing; refurbishment does not make every configuration interchangeable.
Condition evidence Ask for a test video and inspect the actual unit in person where possible. Test the functions you expect to use. Check the seller’s description and the current return and support terms; do not assume all refurbished offers have identical terms.
Warranty and support Do not assume the manufacturer’s warranty transfers. Sony’s US guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by its warranty. Sony says its certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. Microsoft’s refurbished Xbox listings describe warranty and support; confirm the current terms for the offer.
Returns Ask whether you can test before paying and what happens if a fault appears. For shipped purchases, check the seller’s return terms and reputation. Read the current listing’s return terms before checkout; availability and conditions can change.
Total cost Add the delivered price and any missing items or replacements you actually need. Compare the final delivered price with the used option, including any differences in included accessories and protection.

Neither “used” nor “refurbished” alone tells you whether the deal is good. A documented warranty is useful only if its terms apply to you, and a low price is not useful if the console fails a feature you need.

Before you meet the seller

Do the easy checks before travelling or sending payment. Sony recommends checking a seller’s reputation, requesting a test video, inspecting the PlayStation product, and confirming access to online services. Use those checks to establish whether the seller is willing and able to show the particular unit working.

  1. Ask for the exact model and configuration. Confirm the generation, model, storage configuration, whether a disc drive is present, and which accessories are included. Ask for a clear photograph of the model and serial label so you can compare it with the unit at handover.
  2. Request a continuous test video. Ask the seller to show the console powering on, reaching its home screen, connecting to the internet, launching a game, and testing the disc drive if the model has one. A video is useful evidence, but it does not replace testing the actual console you will buy.
  3. Agree on a real inspection. Confirm that you can connect the unit to a display and test it before paying, and that you can decline if it fails. If it is being shipped, review the seller’s reputation and written return terms first.
  4. Confirm what comes with it. List the controller, power cable, HDMI cable, and any other items included in the offer. Check that the controller can be paired and used during the test; do not assume it works because it is pictured with the console.

If the seller cannot show the console online, ask why and decide whether that uncertainty is acceptable before you commit. Online access matters if you plan to play online, download games, or use other platform services.

How to test a used Xbox or PlayStation in person

Bring a known-good HDMI cable and, if practical, use a display you know works. Microsoft’s Xbox service-testing guidance includes checking the display connection, fan, game operation, network, USB and peripherals, audio, and disc play where applicable. Sony’s buying guide advises checking image quality, overheating, and the disc drive. Test the actual unit rather than relying only on the seller’s account of its condition.

  1. Match the unit to the listing. Check that the model and serial label are present and readable and that the console is the one shown in any video or photos. Inspect the casing, vents, ports, cables, and label for damage, missing parts, or signs of tampering. A damaged or removed seal is a reason to ask about service history, not proof by itself that the console is faulty.
  2. Check power and video. Connect the console with a known-good cable and start it. Look for a stable image without obvious artifacts or dropouts. Gently check that the cable fits securely; a loose or damaged HDMI connection can make a console difficult to use even if it powers on.
  3. Listen and observe while it runs. Launch a game and leave it running long enough to notice unexpected shutdowns, unstable video or audio, or unusually disruptive fan behavior. A brief home-screen demonstration does not exercise the console in the same way as a game.
  4. Test the included controller. Pair it with the console and try its sticks, triggers, face buttons, and shoulder buttons. Check charging separately if it is rechargeable. Confirm that the controls respond as expected rather than accepting “it worked last week” as a test.
  5. Test the connection you plan to use. Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and verify access to the relevant platform service on that console. If online play or downloads are important to you, do not treat a successful power-on as proof that online access works.
  6. Test the disc drive, if present. Insert a compatible game, confirm that the console reads it and can start or install it as expected, then eject it. Repeat only if a problem needs clarification; do not buy a disc-equipped console on the assumption that its drive works just because the exterior looks intact.
  7. Check other needed ports and audio. Try the USB ports and any audio output or peripheral connection you expect to use. Test the items that matter for your setup rather than assuming every port works because the main game launched.

For a digital-only console, skip the optical-drive test but verify that the configuration suits your library and buying habits. The Xbox Series S is all-digital. If physical games are part of your plan, make sure the exact model you are considering has a working drive; a console’s appearance or family name is not enough to establish its configuration.

Why online access and model configuration matter

Online access is a functional check, not a bonus to postpone until after purchase. A console can power on and display a game while still failing the network or service access you need. Test the exact unit’s connection during inspection if online play, downloads, or platform services are part of your intended use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. That makes service access important when buying a used PlayStation. A serial number is useful for identifying the unit, but the available official guidance does not establish a serial-number lookup that proves an Xbox is free of service restrictions; testing actual network access on the Xbox is the practical check described here. Do not treat a readable label, a seller’s assurance, or a successful offline game as proof of online eligibility.

Also match the model to the games and accessories you intend to use. Confirm the storage configuration and whether the console has an optical drive, then check that those details fit your requirements. A digital-only console may be perfectly suitable if you buy digitally, but it cannot read physical game discs.

Warranty, returns, and what the seller can promise

Warranty coverage depends on the product, purchaser, location, and terms; do not assume that a warranty belonging to the original buyer will protect a later owner. Sony’s US PlayStation buying guide distinguishes third-party used products from its certified-refurbished products: the guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not under warranty and certified-refurbished products include a warranty.

As a specific example, Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s US PS5 limited hardware warranty terms, accessed in 2026, state that coverage is for the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date, is valid in the United States and Canada, and requires proof of purchase showing that date for service. The terms list an altered or removed serial number and unauthorized service or opening among the exclusions. This is a US-and-Canada PS5 example, not a rule for every PlayStation model, Xbox, seller, or country. Check the applicable written terms and original dated receipt rather than relying on a verbal warranty claim.

A seller’s return window is separate from manufacturer warranty coverage. For an in-person private sale, agree before payment whether the unit can be tested and whether the sale can be declined if it fails. For a shipped purchase, read the seller’s return terms and reputation carefully; a promise to “work” is not the same as a documented way to return a faulty console.

Before handing over money: a short decision checklist

  • Buy only after the important functions pass: power, stable picture and audio, controller response, the network or platform service you need, and the disc drive if fitted.
  • Verify the precise model: confirm the label, storage, digital or disc configuration, and included items against the listing.
  • Account for protection: know whether you have a written return option or a warranty that applies to you, and do not assume a private seller’s unit has manufacturer coverage.
  • Compare the actual totals: include shipping and any missing accessories or replacements you need, then compare that number with a certified-refurbished offer carrying stated support terms.
  • Decline if a critical check is blocked: if the seller will not permit testing or the console cannot reach a service you need, do not price it as though that uncertainty has been resolved.

Reset and prepare the console after purchase

If you are buying a console, ask the seller to remove their account and reset the system before handover, or agree how the reset will be completed. If you are selling or passing on a PS4 or PS5, Sony recommends backing up wanted data, removing discs and USB devices you want to keep, recording the serial number, and restoring the console to factory settings. Resetting or initializing deletes user and game data and cannot be undone, so the current owner should preserve anything they need first.

Do not accept a reset as a substitute for the functional checks. The reset prepares the console for a new owner; it does not prove the drive, controller, network, ports, or hardware are sound.

Common mistakes when buying a used console

  • Testing a different console or relying on an old video: test the unit that will change hands. A seller’s demonstration is a useful first screen, not a guarantee about another unit or its condition now.
  • Checking only that it turns on: also test a game, controller, network, relevant ports, and disc reading on a model with a drive. Each is a distinct function.
  • Assuming every model in a generation has the same configuration: verify the exact model and disc capability before comparing listings.
  • Assuming the original warranty follows the console: check the relevant written terms, location, proof-of-purchase requirement, and who is eligible to make a claim.
  • Ignoring online-service access: verify it on the actual device before buying if it matters to your use. This is especially important given Sony’s warning about lost or stolen PlayStation products being suspended from services.
  • Paying before the seller allows inspection: if you cannot test the console or establish a satisfactory return arrangement, treat it as an unresolved risk and decide accordingly.
