Yes—sometimes. A used PS5 is worth buying when its complete, tested cost is clearly below a comparable new or certified-refurbished console in your area, the model has the disc setup you need, and the seller lets you verify hardware, PlayStation-service access, serial number, accessories and account status before payment. There is no universal “good used price”: local listings, model, condition and warranty or return protection determine the value.
Make the decision from the complete cost, not the sticker price
Start with the amount you will really spend. Add the asking price to shipping, a missing controller, absent cables or stand, a game you would otherwise buy, and any repair or replacement you may need. Then compare that total with the same model and configuration sold new locally and with any certified-refurbished offer available in your territory.
A low headline price can disappear once essentials are replaced. Conversely, a slightly higher offer can be better value if it includes the correct controller, all cables, a usable return window and documented testing. Compare like with like: a disc-drive PS5 is not the same proposition as a Digital Edition, and a PS5 Pro should be priced against other PS5 Pro units rather than a base PS5.

A practical value test
- Write down the exact model, storage configuration if stated, disc-drive configuration and serial number.
- List everything included and assign a replacement cost to anything missing.
- Add delivery, travel, taxes, likely repairs and the value of any game or accessory you would have to buy separately.
- Check several current local new and certified-refurbished listings for that same configuration.
- Only proceed when the remaining discount compensates you for the used unit’s condition, seller risk and weaker protection.
The sources available for this guide do not establish a failure-rate statistic, average lifespan or a global used-market average. Do not treat a percentage of retail price as a universal cutoff.

Confirm which PS5 you are actually buying
Ask for a photo of the console label and the box, not just a listing title. The physical hardware must match your plans. A Digital Edition does not meet the needs of someone whose library or buying habits depend on physical game discs. If you want to use discs, verify that the specific console has a disc drive and test it; do not rely on a seller’s wording such as “PS5” alone.
Model and configuration questions
- Disc-drive PS5: confirm the drive is physically present, reads a game and ejects it normally.
- Digital Edition: confirm that it is the digital configuration and price it as such; it is not interchangeable with a disc-equipped console for a disc-based library.
- PS5 Pro: verify that the unit is genuinely a Pro and compare it with Pro listings, not base-model prices. Confirm the exact drive configuration because the listing and your needs may differ.
- Storage and revision: record any stated model code and storage capacity. Sony’s U.S. Certified Refurbished CFI-1000 listing, for example, specifies 825 GB; do not assume every used listing has that capacity.
Price context: Sony’s April 2, 2026 recommended retail prices
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the following recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026. They are new-product benchmarks from the announcement, not used-market averages, guarantees of stock or a rule that a used console must cost a particular percentage less. Recheck the price at the time you buy, because retailer pricing and promotions change.
| Model | United States | United Kingdom | Europe | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | £569.99 | €649.99 | ¥97,980 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | £519.99 | €599.99 | ¥89,980 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | £789.99 | €899.99 | ¥137,980 |
Sony directs buyers in other territories to local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available. Use the price for your own country and the same configuration; converting currencies or importing a console can add taxes, shipping, regional support complications and return costs.
“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.”
— Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, April 2026 price announcement
Compare a private used unit with certified refurbishment
Sony describes its Certified Refurbished products as recertified through full testing to the same functional standards as new products and says they include a standard one-year limited warranty. That makes a certified unit a useful comparison for buyers who value documented testing and stated coverage, although availability, configuration and price vary by territory and date.
The U.S. Certified Refurbished CFI-1000 PS5 listing specifies 825 GB and includes the console, DualSense controller, charging cable, vertical base, HDMI cable, AC cord and manual. It warns that minor cosmetic imperfections may remain and states a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Check the live listing for current stock, price and terms before relying on it.

Before meeting the seller
Do not travel to a meet-up with only a listing screenshot. Ask questions that establish whether the console can be tested and whether the seller’s story is consistent.
Request evidence in advance
- Ask for a continuous or clearly dated video showing the console’s ports, buttons, disc drive if fitted, startup screen and an internet connection.
- Ask for a close, readable photo of the serial number and model label. A missing, altered or illegible serial is a reason to stop rather than a cosmetic issue.
- Ask which accessories are included: controller, charging cable, HDMI cable, AC cord, vertical base or stand, and original packaging if relevant.
- Ask whether the console has been repaired, opened, dropped, exposed to liquid or had recurring shutdowns, drive errors or connection problems.
- Ask for the original purchase receipt and the seller’s written description of any remaining warranty, return period or known fault.
- Ask the seller to remove their account access and deactivate the console at the hand-over. Digital games or an account left on the machine should not be counted as transferable value.
PlayStation’s used-product guidance recommends checking seller reviews and reputation and requesting this type of test video. A cooperative seller should also agree to an in-person test. If the seller refuses reasonable testing, rushes payment or gives an inconsistent history, walk away.
In-person inspection: a step-by-step pass checklist
Meet somewhere you can connect the console to a display, power outlet and network. Bring a known-good HDMI cable and, if possible, a game disc for a disc-drive model. A short inspection cannot certify internal health, so judge observable behavior rather than inventing a temperature or test-duration threshold.
- Match the identity. Compare the console’s model and serial label with the listing, receipt and any advance photos. Confirm the number is present, legible and not defaced. Record it for your paperwork.
- Inspect the exterior. Look for cracks, bent panels, liquid marks, heavy dust, damaged ports, missing feet and signs that the case has been opened. Check warranty seals where visible, but do not remove anything yourself.
- Start it from a cold state. Watch for boot errors, repeated restarts, warning messages, a failure to reach the home screen or a fan that immediately becomes unusually loud. Let the system reach the menu and observe whether the display remains stable.
- Check picture and sound. Use a known-good display and cable. Look for dropouts, sparkles, black screens, audio failure or an HDMI socket that loses connection when the cable is touched normally.
- Test every accessible port. Connect the controller for charging, verify USB data or accessory behavior with an appropriate device, and check the network socket if you plan to use wired LAN. Do not force plugs into a damaged connector.
- Test the controller. Pair the included DualSense, check both sticks for unintended movement, press every face button and D-pad direction, pull both triggers through their range, test vibration or adaptive features in a game where available, and confirm charging and wireless connection. A replacement controller changes the real purchase price.
- Test the disc drive when fitted. Insert a known-good game disc, wait for it to appear, launch or read it, then eject it. Listen for grinding, repeated clicking, failure to accept the disc or failure to eject. Do not assume a drive works because it makes a loading sound.
- Check cooling behavior. During startup and a short game or menu session, watch for sudden shutdowns, overheating warnings, abnormal fan surges or a smell of burning. The official checklist does not publish a numeric safe temperature or a fixed pass/fail duration; do not claim that a brief test rules out an internal fault.
- Connect to the internet. On the console, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the available Wi-Fi network or configure wired LAN, and verify that the system can sign in to PlayStation services. A console reported lost or stolen may have service access permanently suspended, so online access must be checked before money changes hands.
- Confirm account status. Have the seller deactivate the console and remove their account access while you watch. Do not rely on a seller’s account, downloaded games or a promise that credentials will be supplied later; ownership and access may not be transferable under current terms.
- Record the deal. Before payment, write down the model, serial number, included items, agreed price, known cosmetic defects and any return arrangement. Keep the seller’s contact details, receipt and messages.
PlayStation-service and stolen-device risk
Online functionality is part of the console’s value. A unit that boots but cannot access PlayStation services may be unsuitable for your games, updates or account. The used-buying guidance specifically warns that a product reported lost or stolen can have PlayStation service access permanently suspended.
That is why a screenshot of the home screen is not enough. Complete the network setup yourself, reach the sign-in or service-connection result, and ask the seller to deactivate the machine before you leave. If the seller says the network is unavailable, refuses to let you test it or claims that a service suspension can be fixed later, treat the console as unverified and do not pay a price based on full functionality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warranty, receipt and legal protection
Warranty coverage depends on country, product history and the exact terms. PlayStation’s Spain used-buying guidance says a product bought used from a third party may not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, while legal rights under applicable law are unaffected. That is not the same as saying every used console has no rights or that a receipt guarantees service.
Sony’s U.S. and Canada PS5 safety guide states that its limited hardware warranty covers the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase and requires dated proof of purchase for warranty service. It lists exclusions including a serial number that has been altered, defaced or removed and unauthorized opening or service. State and province rights can vary.

Questions to settle before paying
- Whose name is on the original receipt, and does the warranty in your territory transfer to a second owner?
- When did the original one-year period begin, if it applies?
- Has the console been opened or serviced by an unauthorized provider?
- Is the serial number intact and consistent with the receipt?
- Will the seller provide a written return period or accept a return if the demonstrated fault appears immediately?
If the seller cannot document the purchase or refuses a written description of the deal, value the console as having little or no manufacturer protection and demand a correspondingly stronger price advantage—or choose another unit.

Included items and hidden replacement costs
Make an inventory before negotiating. A complete listing should identify the console, at least one controller if promised, charging cable, HDMI cable and AC cord. A vertical base or stand matters if you intend to position the console that way. Missing items are not merely inconveniences: they delay setup and reduce the discount once replacements are added.
Check that the controller actually belongs to the sale and is not only being borrowed for the demonstration. Confirm that cables fit the console and display, and test charging rather than accepting “it worked last time.” If a game disc is included, inspect it separately; do not let a bundle obscure a console defect or an account-dependent digital game.
When the right answer is to walk away
- The serial number is missing, altered or different from the listing or receipt.
- The seller will not show startup, ports, controller operation, disc reading where applicable and internet access.
- The console displays errors, loses its picture, shuts down, overheats, or has a persistently abnormal fan or drive noise.
- PlayStation-service access cannot be verified, or the seller says the console may have been reported lost or stolen.
- The seller leaves an account on the console, offers digital games as the main value, or will not deactivate access.
- Essential accessories are missing and the adjusted total is no longer clearly below a protected alternative.
- The seller’s history, receipt and repair story conflict, or payment is demanded before testing.
There will be another listing. A refusal to allow ordinary checks is information about the transaction, not a reason to skip them.
A simple decision worksheet
Use these three outcomes after testing:
| Result | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | The model and disc configuration fit, all essential functions work, service access is verified, account access is removed, and the adjusted total is meaningfully below comparable protected alternatives. | Document the deal and pay only the agreed amount. |
| Negotiate | The console works but has cosmetic wear, missing accessories or weaker protection that has a clear replacement or risk cost. | Recalculate the complete total and proceed only if the discount still compensates for those items. |
| Walk away | Identity, online access, core hardware, account status or seller cooperation cannot be verified. | Do not pay for an unverified console, regardless of the advertised discount. |
Bottom line for different buyers
Buy used when you can test locally
A used PS5 can be a sensible purchase when you can inspect it in person, verify PlayStation-service access and account deactivation, and the complete price is substantially better than the same configuration new or certified refurbished. The discount is compensation for unknown history and potentially weaker warranty protection, not a reward for buying any cheap listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrefer certified refurbishment when protection matters
A documented recertification process and stated one-year limited warranty may justify paying more than a private-sale unit. Confirm current stock, territory, contents, price and warranty terms; the U.S. CFI-1000 example is not a promise that every region offers the same configuration.
Buy new when the gap is small
If adding a controller, cables, travel, repairs or risk leaves little difference from a new or certified-refurbished offer, the used unit has not earned its discount. Choose the option whose model, protection and return terms match how much uncertainty you are willing to accept.
