A SATA SSD can be the smarter second drive if your PC supports it and it costs meaningfully less than an NVMe drive of the same capacity—or if your M.2 slots are already occupied. But SATA is not automatically cheaper, and NVMe may be the better buy when prices are close or your work involves large, frequent transfers. Compare current local prices and check compatibility before deciding.

When a SATA SSD makes sense as a second drive

A secondary drive often holds files that do not need the fastest available storage: media, general documents, backups, game libraries, and less-used projects. For those uses, a compatible SATA SSD can provide solid-state storage without paying extra for throughput you may rarely use. Samsung describes a hybrid arrangement with NVMe as the primary drive and SATA as secondary storage in its interface guidance.

SATA is a reasonable choice when all three conditions line up:

  • Your computer has a compatible SATA connection and a place to install the drive.
  • The same-capacity SATA model is meaningfully less expensive than the NVMe alternative available to you.
  • Your second-drive workload does not depend on NVMe-class throughput.

If any of those conditions fails, the SATA label alone is not a reason to choose it.

What SATA gives up to NVMe

SATA III has a maximum interface bandwidth of 6 Gb/s, roughly 600 MB/s, according to SanDisk’s technical overview. That is an interface ceiling, not a promise that an individual drive will deliver that speed in real use. NVMe SSDs use PCIe and can offer substantially higher throughput potential.

The difference matters most for work that moves large files or repeatedly reads and writes substantial amounts of data. For everyday office tasks or storing media, a faster interface may not translate into a dramatic change in how the computer feels. The relevant question is whether your actual second-drive workload benefits from the additional throughput—not whether one interface has a higher headline maximum.

Check the drive type and your PC’s compatibility

M.2 describes a form factor, not a protocol

M.2 is the physical form factor used by some SSDs; it does not mean that a drive is NVMe. M.2 SSDs can use either SATA or NVMe, and the motherboard or computer must support the particular type. Kingston explains the distinction in its guide to SATA and NVMe M.2 drives. Check your device documentation rather than assuming that an M.2 slot accepts every M.2 SSD.

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD needs connections and room

A typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD needs a compatible mounting space, a SATA data connection to the motherboard, and SATA power from the power supply. Some desktop owners already have the required connections; others may need to confirm that the case has room and that the cables or ports are available. On a system with occupied M.2 slots, a 2.5-inch SATA drive may offer a practical way to add storage, provided the system supports it.

  1. Look up your motherboard or computer’s storage specifications and confirm that it supports the drive type you plan to buy.
  2. For a 2.5-inch SATA drive, check for a suitable mounting location, an available SATA data port, and a compatible power connection.
  3. For an M.2 drive, confirm both the slot’s physical fit and whether it supports SATA, NVMe, or both.
  4. Check any relevant slot or port limitations in your system documentation before ordering.

Compare price at the same capacity—not by interface label

SATA is not reliably the cheaper option at every capacity. SanDisk notes that SSD prices fluctuate and that SATA is no longer consistently less expensive at common capacities. A January 15, 2026, PC Gamer snapshot found the cheapest 1 TB SATA drive was $24 less than an equivalent NVMe option, but that was a dated comparison, not a current or universal price rule. Tom’s Hardware also reported substantial price movement in its 2026 market coverage: the Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB rose from $113 to $363.49 across a year, while the Samsung 870 Evo 2TB was reported around $150 one year earlier and $399 at the time of the article. Those are volatile listing observations for specific drives, not general SSD pricing forecasts.

Before buying, compare locally available drives at the same capacity and calculate the price per terabyte. A small saving may not justify giving up NVMe throughput if you use it; a substantial saving can make SATA attractive for a secondary drive that mostly stores colder data. Because prices vary by date, retailer, and region, make the comparison at the time you shop rather than relying on old price examples.

Choose by workload, capacity, and installation constraints

What matters SATA SSD NVMe SSD
Interface and throughput SATA III is capped at 6 Gb/s, roughly 600 MB/s, at the interface level; this is not a measured drive-speed guarantee. Uses PCIe and has substantially higher throughput potential.
Physical fit A common 2.5-inch SATA drive needs mounting space plus SATA data and power connections. Often installed in an M.2 slot; confirm the slot supports the drive’s protocol.
Best fit for a secondary drive General files, media, backups, or less-used data when compatible and sufficiently cheaper. Large transfers or demanding workloads where higher throughput is useful, or when its price is close to SATA.
Price Not consistently cheaper; compare the same capacity in your region at purchase time. May cost more, but the difference varies by capacity, retailer, region, and date.

Also consider whether the drive will hold frequently accessed, active data or mostly act as an archive. A high-throughput drive is easier to justify for repeated large transfers than for files opened occasionally. Factor in available M.2 slots and SATA connections, installation space, and any cooling constraints in the intended location; do not pay for peak speed without a use for it.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose SATA if your PC supports the exact drive, you have the required physical space and connections, and the same-capacity drive is meaningfully cheaper for the work you plan to do.
  • Choose NVMe if you regularly move large files or run demanding storage workloads, if NVMe costs about the same, or if your system makes SATA installation impractical.
  • Pause and verify if you are considering an M.2 drive but do not know whether the slot supports SATA, NVMe, or both.

For a second drive used mainly for general storage, SATA can be a sensible way to avoid paying for performance you will not use. The conclusion is conditional, though: check the fit and compare live same-capacity prices before deciding.
