No. Do not enter passwords, payment-card details, recovery codes, or other sensitive personal information in the built-in PlayStation Portable (PSP) Internet Browser. Sony warns that the browser may not support every website and that browsing or downloading can lead to viruses, data loss, or other problems. A specialist PSP technical reference also reports that the browser cannot negotiate modern TLS versions or verify current root certificates, which can prevent contemporary HTTPS sites from establishing a trustworthy connection.
Use a currently supported device and browser for PlayStation accounts, email, banking, shopping, password managers, and any service that requires a secret. The PSP browser can still be treated as a limited legacy viewer for low-risk information, but a page loading successfully is not proof that a login is safe.
Why the PSP browser is unsuitable for sensitive sign-ins
The PSP browser was built for an older web environment. Modern websites increasingly depend on newer encryption protocols, certificate chains, browser features, and account flows that the console was never designed to maintain. Sony’s own browser license is deliberately cautious:
“The Internet Browser may not support all wireless LAN access connection points or websites.”

That warning is broader than a simple compatibility notice. Sony also tells users to exercise care because browsing or downloading may result in viruses, data loss, or other problems. Sony does not present the legacy browser as currently security-certified for today’s web.
A specialist PSP technical reference supplies useful secondary context: the browser cannot negotiate modern TLS versions or verify current root certificates. TLS is the protocol that protects data in transit, while a root certificate is part of the chain a browser uses to decide whether a site’s certificate is trusted. If either capability is too old, a site may refuse the connection, display a certificate warning, or fall back to behavior that is unsuitable for entering secrets.
The exact failure depends on the PSP firmware, the site’s configuration, the network, and the certificate chain. There is no reliable universal cutoff that lets you label every site as either working or broken. Compatibility uncertainty is itself a reason not to use the browser for account access.
A page loading is not the same as a secure login
Legacy browsers can create a misleading sense of safety because a page may render normally. Displaying text, images, or a login form only shows that the browser received content. It does not establish that the connection meets current HTTPS requirements or that the service supports the browser’s sign-in flow safely.

When the site shows an HTTPS or certificate warning
Stop. Do not select an option such as “continue,” “accept,” or “ignore” to reach a login form. A warning means the browser cannot establish the expected trust relationship; entering a password after bypassing it defeats the protection the warning is describing. Move to a supported device and browser instead.
When there is no visible warning
Absence of a warning is not a security certification. The browser may have limited support for current protocols or certificate authorities, and a site’s appearance cannot reveal those details. Treat a password field, payment form, recovery-code prompt, or personal-data form as sensitive regardless of whether the page looks normal.
When a download is offered
Avoid downloading files through the PSP browser unless you have a specific, trusted, low-risk reason and understand what the file is. Sony’s license specifically cautions that browsing or downloads can cause viruses, data loss, or other problems. The console’s age makes it a poor place to inspect or recover from a malicious download.
What Sony’s browser settings do—and do not do
The PSP manual documents controls for JavaScript, cookies, cache, proxy-server use, and memory conservation. These controls describe how the historical browser behaves; they do not bring its encryption stack or certificate store up to current standards.

Changing these options may help a historical page display, but no combination turns the PSP browser into a current secure sign-in environment. In particular, enabling JavaScript or allowing cookies should not be interpreted as a recommendation for sensitive browsing today.
Choose between the PSP and a supported device
For a sensitive task, the practical decision is not which PSP setting to adjust. It is whether to use the legacy browser at all.

This is a capability and maintenance distinction, not a claim that every PSP connection fails or that every current browser is perfect. It is enough that the PSP cannot provide a dependable basis for trusting a sensitive transaction.

- Leave the PSP login page. If a site asks for a password, payment details, a recovery code, or other personal information, do not submit it from the console.
- Switch to a currently supported device and browser. Use a device that still receives operating-system and browser security updates. Type the service’s address yourself or use a trusted bookmark rather than following an unexpected message.
- Use the account provider’s supported authentication options. Sony’s current PlayStation account guidance recommends passkeys where available. A passkey avoids typing a reusable password into the legacy browser and is tied to a supported authentication environment.
- Keep account details private. Sony advises, “Never share your account details with anyone else.” Do not give a password, one-time code, passkey approval, or recovery information to a person or site claiming to offer rewards, free items, troubleshooting, or account verification.
- Avoid shared-device sign-ins. Sony’s guidance also advises avoiding sign-ins on shared devices. If you must use one temporarily, do not save credentials, sign out completely, and remove any temporary browser data when the session ends.
- Confirm the transaction before submitting. Check the address, the account being changed, and the amount or destination of any payment. A familiar-looking page is not sufficient if the browser or connection is unsupported.
What to do after an SSL or certificate error
Users commonly describe the PSP symptom as an SSL error, but the visible message can have several causes. The safe response is the same because the console cannot be relied on to satisfy current certificate and TLS requirements.

- Do not bypass the warning or add an exception for a login, payment page, email account, or other service containing personal information.
- Do not enter credentials just to test whether the form submits.
- Close the page and repeat the task on a supported device and browser.
- If the same warning appears on the supported device, verify that the device’s date and time are correct, update its operating system and browser, and contact the service through its official support channel. Those checks apply to the supported device, not as a reason to trust the PSP.
A certificate warning can also occur on a harmless public page, but it still means the PSP cannot validate the connection as expected. Treat the warning as a stop signal whenever the page requests anything sensitive.

The browser may be acceptable for limited, read-only activities when no account or personal information is involved. Examples include viewing a public reference page, checking non-sensitive information, or reading a page that does not ask you to sign in. Keep the task narrow and avoid links that lead to downloads, forms, or account prompts.
Do not use it for:
- PlayStation, email, social-media, cloud-storage, or work-account passwords
- Banking, shopping, payment-card, tax, insurance, or health information
- Recovery codes, multifactor authentication codes, passkeys, or password-manager access
- Identity documents, addresses, phone numbers, or other personal-data forms
- Reward or giveaway pages that request account details
- Downloading unknown files or software
Even for read-only browsing, remember that Sony’s license does not promise support for all websites. A page that works today may change its requirements without any corresponding update to the PSP browser.

Act from a currently supported device. Change the password for the account you used, and do not reuse that password elsewhere. Review active sessions or signed-in devices if the service provides that control, sign out sessions you do not recognize, and enable a passkey or other multifactor protection offered by the account provider. If you entered payment information, contact the relevant provider and monitor the account for unauthorized activity.

These recovery steps reduce the consequences of a potentially exposed credential; they do not make the original PSP session trustworthy after the fact.
Common misconceptions
“The site has a padlock, so the PSP is safe.”
A padlock or an HTTPS address is only meaningful when the browser can negotiate the required protocol and validate the certificate chain. The specialist PSP reference identifies those capabilities as limitations, so the icon cannot serve as a blanket approval.
“Changing cookies or clearing the cache fixes security.”
Cookie and cache controls affect local browser behavior. They do not install new certificate authorities, add modern TLS negotiation, or provide security maintenance.

“It works for one site, so it should work for my account.”
Websites use different certificate chains, protocols, scripts, and authentication systems. One successful page load cannot predict another site’s behavior or establish that a password submission is protected.
“The browser is safe if I only try once.”
Risk does not become acceptable because a credential is entered only once. A single password, payment number, or recovery code can be enough to compromise an account.
