Usually, but not automatically. A high-wattage desktop charging station can be left connected only when its own manual permits that use, it is a compliant product in your market, and it remains uncovered, ventilated, dry, and undamaged. Electrical Safety First takes a more conservative position: unplug chargers after use and do not use USB chargers overnight or while you are away. No general wattage cutoff proves that every station is safe—or unsafe—to remain energized.
What “high wattage” does—and does not—tell you
Wattage describes the maximum electrical power a station can deliver, not whether it is suitable for unattended operation. A station with several USB-C ports may advertise a large combined output so it can charge laptops, tablets, phones, and accessories at the same time. The actual power delivered to each device depends on the station’s power-management design, the device’s request, and the cable’s capabilities.
UL Solutions described USB-C Power Delivery reaching 20 volts and 5 amperes, or 100 watts, in a 2017 technical article. That figure is a power-delivery capability, not a temperature limit, a certification of your particular station, or a threshold for leaving a charger unattended. A 100-watt-capable unit is not inherently dangerous, and a lower-rated unit is not automatically safe if it is poorly built, damaged, covered, or used with incompatible equipment.
The meaningful questions are whether the station is designed and approved for its market, whether it can dissipate heat in its intended location, and whether it shows signs of electrical or thermal failure.

What safety guidance actually says
Electrical Safety First: the conservative household rule
Electrical Safety First advises keeping chargers uncovered and in a well-ventilated environment while charging. It also advises buying from reputable retailers, avoiding substandard or counterfeit products, unplugging devices when charging is complete, and not using USB chargers overnight or when you are out of the house.
That advice is intentionally cautious. It does not establish that every compliant desktop station becomes unsafe the moment its plug remains in a socket. It does mean you should not treat unattended charging as risk-free simply because the station is on a desk rather than a bed or sofa.
Manufacturer instructions control the specific model
The official Tripp Lite USB charging-station manual says to leave adequate space around the station for proper ventilation. That kind of instruction is model-specific: another station may require a different clearance, orientation, ambient-temperature range, power supply, or duty cycle. Read the manual supplied with your exact model before deciding that continuous connection is acceptable.

Regulatory findings concern nonconforming products
Health Canada has warned that certain USB chargers that fail applicable CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 62368-1:19 criteria, or an equivalent standard, pose a danger. The finding is scoped to chargers that do not meet the applicable requirements; it is not a claim that every USB charger is hazardous. Certification marks should be verifiable for the product and the country where you use it, rather than inferred from a marketplace photograph or a seller’s wording.
Set up a charging station safely on a desk
- Choose a stable, dry surface. Put the station on a desk or shelf that will not wobble, and keep it away from sinks, drinks, humidifiers, radiators, direct sunlight, and other heat sources.
- Keep every ventilation opening clear. Do not place the unit under papers, clothing, books, a monitor stand, or a cable-management tray that traps heat. Leave the clearance specified in the manual; if no distance is given, do not crowd the sides, top, or underside.
- Use the intended power supply. Connect the station only to the adapter, mains lead, and voltage range specified by its manufacturer. Substituting a supply with a different output or connector can defeat the station’s protections.
- Use suitable cables. A cable must be compatible with the port and the device’s requested power. UL notes that poorly constructed cables can introduce overheating or fire concerns. Replace cables with frayed insulation, bent plugs, loose connectors, or heat damage.
- Prevent strain on plugs and sockets. Route cables so the station, adapter, and wall outlet are not pulled sideways. Do not run a power cable where it can be crushed by furniture or repeatedly flexed at the connector.
- Keep the outlet accessible. You should be able to disconnect the station quickly without moving heavy equipment or reaching through a tangle of cables.
A practical decision test before leaving it connected
Use this checklist each time you install a new station or move one to a different desk:
- The manual does not prohibit continuous connection or unattended operation.
- The product has safety or conformity information appropriate to your market that you can verify from the manufacturer or certification body.
- The station is on a hard, dry, uncovered surface with the specified ventilation space.
- The power adapter, plug, outlet, station housing, and cables are intact.
- The station remains only mildly warm under your normal load and does not become progressively hotter.
- No connected device, cable, or plug is being used outside its stated rating.
- You are present often enough to notice an abnormal smell, noise, smoke, sparking, or a sudden temperature change.
If any item fails, disconnect the station and investigate before using it again. A high power rating cannot compensate for poor placement, a damaged component, or an unverified product.

Should you leave it plugged in overnight or while away?
Electrical Safety First’s explicit advice is not to use USB chargers overnight or while you are out of the house, and to unplug the device when charging is complete. Following that rule gives the lowest practical exposure to a fault while no one is present.

Some desktop stations are engineered for office environments where the base remains connected during the workday. That does not prove that the manufacturer permits overnight operation in a home. Check the exact manual for language about standby, continuous operation, maximum duty cycle, and unattended use. If the documentation is silent, do not interpret silence as permission; use the conservative approach and disconnect the station when you will be away or asleep.
You can reduce unnecessary energized time without repeatedly unplugging a difficult-to-reach wall adapter by using an accessible, appropriately rated switched outlet. The switch must itself be suitable for the station’s input and installed in accordance with local electrical rules.

How to judge a station when comparing models
Do not rank stations by advertised wattage alone. Compare the following evidence for the exact model and regional version:

A product-page claim such as “fast,” “100 W,” or “smart protection” is not a substitute for a manual and verifiable conformity information. If the seller cannot identify the manufacturer, model number, input rating, and applicable certification, choose a product with clearer documentation.

Warning signs: stop using the station immediately
Unplug the station at once if you notice an unusual odor, sparking, smoke, swelling, cracks, exposed conductors, burn marks, arcing noises, or excessive heat at the station, adapter, plug, or outlet. Electrical Safety First specifically flags these symptoms. Do not continue charging “just one more device” to see whether the problem goes away.

After disconnecting it, allow hot components to cool without touching damaged areas. Do not dismantle the charger, replace internal parts, bypass a fuse, or attempt a repair unless the manufacturer and a properly qualified technician provide an approved procedure. Contact the retailer or manufacturer about warranty, replacement, recall, or disposal. If there is active smoke, flame, or a rapidly heating battery, leave the area and contact emergency services according to local guidance.
When the outlet is the problem
A hot, discolored, loose, buzzing, or sparking wall outlet can be unsafe even when the charging station is sound. Disconnect the load and have the outlet assessed by a qualified electrician. Moving the same station to another outlet may identify a location-specific issue, but it does not make a visibly damaged outlet safe.
When only one cable or device overheats
Disconnect that cable and device first. Check for bent contacts, debris, physical damage, and a mismatch between the cable’s rating and the device’s requested power. If the station stays cool with other known-good cables and devices, the accessory may be the source; if the station heats abnormally with every load, stop using the station itself.

For this question, “safe” should mean that the station is being used within its documented limits, has appropriate conformity evidence, is ventilated, and shows no damage or abnormal behavior. It does not mean that a fault is impossible. Any mains-powered device can fail, which is why conservative guidance emphasizes avoiding unattended charging and responding to warning signs.
The available guidance does not establish a universal wattage ceiling, a universal standby temperature, or a blanket rule that every high-wattage station must be unplugged after every use. It supports a conditional decision: follow the exact manual, keep the unit uncovered and cool, use compatible equipment, inspect it regularly, and disconnect it when charging is complete or when you will be away.
Bottom line for a desk setup
If your station’s manual allows the way you intend to use it, the product has verifiable conformity information, and it is placed uncovered with clear ventilation on a dry, stable desk, leaving it connected for attended daytime use may be reasonable. Do not infer permission from wattage or from the fact that the station appears cool. For overnight or unattended charging, the safer course—consistent with Electrical Safety First’s guidance—is to unplug it, and always disconnect it immediately if it becomes unusually hot, smells, sparks, smokes, swells, or shows damage.
