Yes—if the foldable design solves a problem you genuinely have and you can accept more careful handling and less predictable repair costs than with a conventional phone. Current evidence is reassuring in controlled tests: Which? says 58 of 59 foldable models it tested passed 30,000 opening-and-closing cycles. Samsung says the Flex hinge in the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 was designed for more than 200,000 cycles on average. Those figures are useful durability signals, not guarantees of a particular real-world lifespan.

The bigger buying risk is not simply that a hinge will wear out. Grit, drops, screen damage, moisture, ordinary wear exclusions and regional repair terms can matter just as much. A foldable is easier to justify when its pocketable flip design or large book-style screen will be used every day, and when you have checked the exact model’s warranty and protection options before paying.

What the hinge evidence actually tells you

Fold-cycle ratings answer a narrow question: how a hinge performs during a repeated-motion test. They do not measure every condition a phone experiences in a pocket, bag, car or workplace.

Samsung’s 200,000-cycle figure is model-specific

Samsung’s support FAQ for the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 says, “The Flex hinge is designed to handle over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average.” The same FAQ says those phones should last more than five years under an assumption of 100 openings and closings per day. This is a manufacturer estimate for the named models, based on stated usage; it is not a promise for every Samsung foldable, every later generation or every competing brand. Read the full Samsung hinge FAQ for the model scope and operating guidance.

Which?’s independent test is encouraging but limited

Which? says its machine opens and closes phones 30,000 times. In a report published on 30 October 2025, it wrote: “Of the 59 foldable models we’ve tested since 2020, 58 sailed through our relentless folding test without a single problem.” The one model that faltered was described as “a very early model.” This is a controlled result across Which?’s test sample, not a population-wide failure rate and not proof that a phone will survive drops, contamination or years of varied use. Which? also reported that 28% of its surveyed members were concerned about the hinge; that figure describes its members, not all phone buyers. The test and survey details are in Which?’s 2025 report.

Why cycle counts cannot predict your personal phone

  • A laboratory rig applies repeated, consistent motion. Your phone may be opened at different angles, twisted in one hand, or closed with an object or particle in the way.
  • A cycle count does not establish resistance to a fall, pressure in a bag, liquid, sand or fine grit.
  • “Average” is not a minimum. It does not mean every hinge reaches that number or that a failure at an earlier point is covered free of charge.
  • The test may focus on the hinge mechanism rather than the cover glass, flexible display, frame, cables or other parts that can make a foldable unusable.

Use the numbers to compare the quality of the evidence, not to promise yourself a specific replacement date.

Hinge wear is only one durability risk

Dust and grit can affect the hinge

Samsung’s US care guidance warns that small particles such as sand may damage the screen or affect hinge performance, even on IP48-rated models. It explicitly says IP48 does not mean a phone is completely dust-proof. An IP rating therefore should not be interpreted as permission to use a foldable on a beach, in a dusty workshop or around loose grit without precautions. Samsung’s foldable-care guidance explains the limitation.

Water and dust resistance can decline with wear

Google’s safety and regulatory guide for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold says resistance to dust and water can diminish over time because of normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage. That warning applies even when a device originally carries a resistance rating. Google directs owners to country-specific warranty information and professional service rather than treating the rating as permanent protection. See the Pixel 10 Pro Fold safety guide for those qualifications.

The screen may fail before the hinge

A hinge can continue moving while the inner display, cover screen, frame or protective layer develops a fault. A cycle rating that refers to folding motion does not certify those components. If the phone has a line, flicker, dead area, lifting layer, uneven opening or new resistance, stop testing it by repeatedly opening and closing it. Back up your data and arrange an authorized inspection.

Which foldable format makes the risk worthwhile?

Flip-style phones

A flip phone folds into a smaller rectangle. Its practical payoff is pocketability, not a tablet-sized workspace. It can be a good fit if you want a normal-width phone when open but a shorter device when closed, and if you will use the outer display for quick checks rather than constantly reopening it.

Book-style phones

A book-style model opens to a much larger inner display for reading, multitasking, documents or video. The benefit is substantial only if you will use that screen often. You also carry a larger, more complex device and expose more display area when it is open. Buying one solely because it is novel makes the extra mechanical and repair uncertainty harder to justify.

Conventional phones remain the safer choice for some users

Choose a non-folding phone if you work around sand, metal filings or construction dust; routinely drop devices; need the lowest possible repair uncertainty; or do not have a strong use for a second screen. A conventional phone is not indestructible, but it removes the fold mechanism and flexible inner display from the failure equation.

Galaxy Z Fold7 Samsung’s US product page identifies an Armor FlexHinge and an IP48 rating. A published cycle number on that page, or evidence that it outlasts competing phones. See the Galaxy Z Fold7 listing for the model-specific specification.
Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google warns that dust and water resistance can diminish through wear, repair, disassembly or damage, and points owners to local warranty and professional service information. A comparable cycle rating or a universal repair outcome.

Because the published evidence uses different models, procedures and definitions, it cannot support a reliable brand ranking for hinge longevity.

Care routine that reduces avoidable hinge stress

Care cannot eliminate mechanical risk, but it can prevent a common class of avoidable damage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model.

  1. Check both halves before closing. Look for sand, lint, coins, cards or any other object on the inner screen. Samsung specifically advises ensuring that objects are not trapped between the screens.
  2. Keep the phone away from loose grit. If you have been at a beach, near masonry dust or in another dirty environment, move to a clean area before opening or closing it.
  3. Wipe visible dirt gently. Samsung recommends a soft, dry cloth and warns against excessive force when cleaning around the hinge. A soft, dry lint-free cloth is sufficient; the cited guidance does not establish a need for a special cleaning kit.
  4. Use the normal folding motion. Do not force the phone past its designed position, twist one half against the other or repeatedly cycle it to investigate a sound.
  5. Keep liquids and particles out of the hinge area. An IP rating has limits, and Samsung says IP48 is not completely dust-proof. Follow the model’s liquid-exposure instructions instead of assuming the rating covers every situation.
  6. Get professional help for a change in behavior. If opening becomes uneven, gritty, unusually tight or noisy, stop applying force. Back up the phone and use the manufacturer’s authorized service route.

Warranty and repair terms can decide the purchase

A hinge concern is partly a contract concern. The same mechanical problem can have different costs depending on country, model, date, proof of purchase and whether you bought an additional protection plan.

Samsung US Samsung’s mobile warranty terms exclude ordinary wear and tear and some damage associated with sand, dust or dirt. Do not assume a worn hinge or particle-related fault will be covered as a manufacturing defect. Read the US mobile warranty terms for the exact exclusions.

Check the model, country, deductible, service route and covered incidents before treating Care+ as hinge insurance. See Samsung Canada’s warranty and care page.
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google directs owners to country-specific warranty details and professional service; it also warns that resistance can diminish after wear, repair, disassembly or damage. Confirm local coverage and authorized repair availability before purchase rather than relying on a general Pixel warranty assumption. The details are in Google’s safety and regulatory guide.

No comparable cross-brand repair prices are established in the cited material. Ask the seller or service provider for the local out-of-warranty price for the hinge, inner display and full device, and ask whether a hinge diagnosis is billed separately. Also confirm whether an authorized center exists near you and whether opening the phone outside that network affects coverage.

Signs that need attention

A single unfamiliar sound does not prove imminent failure, but a persistent change deserves inspection. Watch for:

  • new grinding, crunching or clicking that continues after the exterior is clean;
  • resistance or stiffness that was not present before;
  • one side stopping at a different angle or the two halves no longer meeting evenly;
  • visible grit in the hinge or between the displays;
  • screen flicker, a line, a dead touch area, bubbling or a lifting protective layer near the fold;
  • a frame gap, crack or deformation after a drop.

Do not try to “wear in” a stiff hinge by cycling it hundreds of times. Photograph the condition, back up your data, record the model and serial information, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. That documentation can help distinguish a sudden accident from gradual wear when a service center assesses the phone.

A practical buying decision

A foldable is a sensible buy when

  • you have a specific daily use for the compact flip form or the larger inner display;
  • you can keep the phone away from sand, fine dust and objects that could be trapped when closing;
  • you are comfortable following a more careful cleaning and handling routine;
  • you have checked the exact regional warranty, protection-plan terms and authorized service route;
  • you can absorb an out-of-warranty repair or replacement if the problem is classified as wear, contamination or accidental damage.

Wait or choose a conventional phone when

  • your work or hobbies expose devices to grit, filings, heavy dust or frequent impacts;
  • the only reason to buy is curiosity rather than a feature you will use repeatedly;
  • you need a predictable low-cost repair path;
  • the local seller cannot explain hinge, display and accidental-damage coverage in writing;
  • you would be unable to replace the phone if a hinge or inner-screen repair is denied.

Questions to ask before checkout

  1. What exact model and regional variant am I buying?
  2. What hinge-cycle claim, if any, does the manufacturer make for this model, and what conditions qualify it?
  3. What dust and water rating does this model have, and what does the manufacturer say that rating does not protect against?
  4. Are ordinary wear, sand, dust and accidental drops excluded from the standard warranty?
  5. What paid protection is available locally, what does it cover, and what are the deductible and service limits?
  6. Where is the nearest authorized repair center, and what is the quoted out-of-warranty cost for hinge or inner-display work?

The bottom line

Hinge-wear anxiety should not automatically rule out a foldable. The best available evidence shows strong performance in controlled repeated-fold tests, while manufacturer guidance confirms that real-world contamination, damage and wear remain important limits. Treat cycle counts as bounded engineering evidence, not a lifetime promise. Buy the form factor only when its benefit is concrete, protect it from grit, follow the model’s cleaning and folding instructions, and verify repair coverage and local service before you commit.
